Venice, a Mediterranean regional power
Economic, maritime and political perspectives, 1669-1797
This seminar aims to explore the relationship between Venice and the Mediterranean between the loss of Crete, the last major dominion of Venetian maritime empire in 1669, and the end of the Republic in 1797. Through the analysis of economic and commercial exchanges, naval activities and diplomatic/military relations of the Serenissima in the Mediterranean, we aim to discuss the dynamics of transformation and adjustment of the Republic’s new status as a regional power faced with the challenges of an Inner Sea crossed and populated by more powerful and richer competitors.

Geoarchaeology and archaeology of the city of Cádiz, Spain
This workshop-seminar organised in Strasbourg will be focusing on the archaeology and geoarchaeology of Cádiz. New sedimentary cores drilled in a marine palaeochannel crossing the city in Antiquity will be discussed. Researchers from the University of Cádiz, the CNRS, the ENGEES, and the University of Strasbourg will be present.

Urban and architectural identities in Mediterranean cities
Identités urbaines et architecturales dans les villes méditerranéennes
The architectural and urban diversity characterising mediterranean city is inseparable from their identity. It seems clear at that this diversity and multiplicity of different identities shoud be considered as one of the greatest cultural and human values. The coexistence of forms in time and space, the blending of urban and architectural cultures, influences and contaminations, even the contrast and and contradictions of identity that are revealed in the mediterranean urban territory reflect the stratification of the city in its pragmatics implications and its identity meanings. Today, in a context of a competition and attractiveness betwen territories, several mediterranean cities are going through a period of profound changes. Faced with these transformations, the reference to "identity territories" (Troin, 2004) and the ability of the city to build an identity and speared it among the population are called into question.

Connecting Mediterranean and Atlantic History
2nd meeting of the Atlantic Italies Network
The Atlantic Italies Network – a developing network of scholars working on economic entanglements and related cultural phenomena that emerged between Italian-speaking territories and the Atlantic world from the fifteenth to the nineteenth century – aims at examining connections related to European states without colonies as well as their links to sub-Saharan Africa and the Americas and at contributing to current attempts to analyse early modern Italian territories in their global contexts. The second meeting of the network will particularly appreciate papers involving economic dimensions related to shipping, trade and economic interconnections, but we welcome all proposals contributing to our overall perspective.

Climate and Societies in the Mediterranean during the Last Two Millennia
Current State Of Knowledge and Research Perspectives
This two-day international conference aims to highlight recent and challenging interdisciplinary studies dealing with complex historical climate/society interactions in Mediterranean during the last two millennia. The study of these existing connections can help in better understanding the role played by past climatic events in the eruption of regional conflicts, in forced migration and displacement of people, in periodically appearing infectious disease outbreaks or in subsistence crises like food shortages and famines Similarly, it seems necessary to identify and analyze socio-economic and technological responses (e.g. water supply systems) together with mitigation and general adaptation strategies, insofar as they existed, to cope with climate change.

Le colloque international « Hagnos, Miasma, Katharsis. Voyage entre les catégories du pur et de l’impur dans l’imaginaire du monde ancien » (Cagliari, 4-6 mai 2016) propose une mise au point sur les études consacrées aux phénomènes du pur et de l’impur et à leur exégèse antique. La réflexion autour de ce thème privilégiera une approche interdisciplinaire, tenant compte des perspectives iconographique, littéraire, anthropologique et historico-religieuse, afin d’encourager une confrontation et un dialogue élargis entre les spécialistes de cette question cruciale pour comprendre les mentalités antiques.

The purpose of the course is to expose students to interdisciplinary research that involves archaeology and the natural sciences in the field. The students will experience interactive work that combines excavation and analysis of materials using an on-site laboratory. Le Congrès International « La Méditerranée et le Sud Ibérique l’époque médiévale : culture, identité et patrimoine. Siècles V-XV » aura lieu le 5 et 6 Décembre 2013, signalant les 1100 ans du pillage de Évora, ville du Alentejo, par le futur roi Ordoño II de León en 913. Le Congrès aura comme principal objectif de rassembler jeunes chercheurs et spécialistes, portugais et étrangers, de domaines si divers comme l’Archéologie, l’Histoire, la Littérature, l’Histoire des Arts, l’Anthropologie et autres dédiés à l’étude de la thématique du Sud Ibérique à l’époque médiévale. On cherche une analyse multidisciplinaire des relations de proximité et les affinités qui ont eu lieu à l’époque médiévale, entre des régions méridionales et l’espace méditerranéen ainsi que d’autres thématiques reliées à champs spécifiques de l’Art de l’Histoire économique, politique et sociale ou de la culture et mentalités du Sud Ibérique.

Climatic, environmental and social dimensions of the Little Ice Age (LIA) in the Mediterranean
Special issue of Méditerranée (2014)
This special issue will look at the climatic, environmental and social dimensions of the Little Ice Age (LIA) in the Mediterranean, between the second half of the 13th to 19th centuries. Contributions should derive from the Meditterranean area, including its mountainous borders, and can include sedimentary and palaeoecological records, in addition to written and iconographic sources. The editors particularly encourage multidisciplinary studies.

What is the historical experience of cities in the former territories of the Ottoman Empire - in the Balkans, Anatolia, the Middle East, and North Africa - in dealing with the impact of global changes and the transformation from Empire to nation States? How did people of different cultural, social and religious backgrounds live together? How are such examples of conviviality, conflict, migration, and urban regimes of governance and stratification conceptualized? And how have urban traditions been reinterpreted, and what bearing does this have on modern conceptions of civil society, multicultural societies, migration, or cosmopolitanism. Society and Politics in South-Eastern Europe during the 19th century
There has always been a negative image attached to South-Eastern European politics and polities and rarely has it been widely acknowledged (Mazower) that the process of state formation in the region was not just a pale and gruesome caricature of Western European models but rather a complicated affair involving juggling with various institutional models (local as well as imported ones), coping with societies of a sometimes inextricable ethnoreligious diversity and varying degrees of political allegiance to central power, dealing with foreign interference and tampering. 19th century visitors of the region contributed a lot to this negative image which still clings to the region (Todorova) and culturalists still like to refer back to the 19th c. as the genealogical matrix of all the region’s evils.
