Diffusion of zoological knowledge in late Antiquity and The Byzantine period

The 2019 conference in Trier will focus on this process of diffusion and transformation of zoological data in Late Antiquity and the Byzantine Period by selected case studies. We welcome studies on single authors or texts in Greek, Latin and Arabic, studies on visual images and monuments, or – in a wider perspective – on literary genres, different media in the visual arts or specific cultural contexts in view of their influence on literature and art.

    Making children?

Human procreation and family planning and the challenge of the evolution in values in the 20th century

    Town Twinning in Europe

Concepts and Praxis of Rapprochement during the 20th Century

Today there are almost 20,000 communal partnerships across Europe. In fact, they have become somewhat of a mass phenomenon since the 1960s. Despite this impressive development, historical research has shown little devotion to this particular form of international relations. Its detailed analysis, however, allows special insight into the participation of “common citizens” in international initiatives and international exchange in a communal setting. The goal of the conference is to depict the history of town twinning by challenging the concept and definition thereof. City partnerships have particularly developed in the context of bilateral rapprochement after the Second World War, the European Integration and the Cold War. Since the collapse of the Soviet bloc, they have also become a symbol for a Europe of civil partnership “from below”. Furthermore, they do not only play an important role in Europe and its relations with its neighbors, but through globalization, ultimately with the rest of the world.

Acting managers in public policy networks

New practices and solutions under the pressure of budget cuts and performance expectations

Our Seminar renews its interest for the skills, practices and tools of the public manager, this time in the context of public policy networks. Public managers today invest in networked activities: they must show political and strategic acumen, balance responsibilities and performances, negotiate resources, modernize their work and coordination tools, and rationalize activities under budget constraints. The lasting economic and budget crises call us to enhance and renew our knowledge in these areas. This may be achieved through empirical studies and dialogue between public officials and researchers.
