  Call for papers - Epistemology and methodology

  The emergence of the Ḥadīṯ as the authority of knowledge, 4th/10th and the 8th/14th century

  2ᵉ Colloque de l'Idéo au Caire

  One of the questions raised today by some Egyptian religious authorities is on the lawfulness and relevance of using intellectual tools foreign to the Islamic tradition to read and interpret the Qurʾān and texts of the classic Islamic heritage. Is it permissible and appropriate to use contemporary human sciences to study the texts of the Arab-Islamic patrimony or should it be limited to the Ḥadīṯ? IDEO would like to contribute to this debate by studying the emergence of the Ḥadīṯ as the authority of knowledge in the Islamic sciences between the 4^_ᵗʰ/10ᵗʰ and the 8ᵗʰ/14ᵗʰ century.

  The Crusades in Egypt

  History and memories

  Les historiographies arabes et occidentales des croisades orientales sont dynamiques. Les chercheurs explorent désormais des champs quelque peu délaissés par leurs devanciers. Ainsi, dans la lignée d’Alphonse Dupront, les croisades sont désormais plus souvent appréhendées dans le temps long, comme un phénomène mémoriel qui marqua les consciences collectives des peuples d’Orient et d’Occident. Cette journée d’étude vise à mieux comprendre, dans la longue durée, l’impact des croisades sur les hommes et les sociétés d’Occident et d’Orient. En réunissant des chercheurs occidentaux et égyptiens, elle a aussi pour objectif majeur de mettre en dialogue des historiographies de la croisade (arabe, occidentale) qui se méconnaissent. Elle est largement centrée sur l’Égypte, mais s’inscrit dans le cadre plus large du Proche-Orient : aux yeux des croisés eux-mêmes, l’Égypte et le Bilād al-Šām formaient un ensemble peu dissociable.

  Revolts and Transitions in the Arab World: Towards a New Urban Agenda?

  This international colloquium aims to discuss the urban dimension of the great changes in the Arab world, from the origins of the 2011 revolutionary episodes to the present experiences of democratisation, along with phases of political transition and socio-economic crisis in which states are still entangled. Our objective is to (re)consider processes of urbanisation and urban practices, by the yardstick of the political, economic and social issues relevant in the region since the beginning of the decade. Organized by the Pole "City and Sustainable Development" of the CEDEJ (http://www.cedej-eg.org/), this colloquium is also part of two ongoing research programs : - Sustainable City in the South Mediterranean (MeRsi project), co-funded by the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie (Academic Agency of French-speaking countries)- Middle East Office and the CEDEJ; - SYSREMO: Global Geographies : Towards a regional system in the Middle East, funded by the Agence Nationale de la Recherche (National Agency for Research), France (ESO-Rennes).

  War and peace in the medieval Near East, Xth to XVth century

  Histoire, archéologie et anthropologie

  Organisation : Institut français d’archéologie orientale du Caire - Institut français du Proche-Orient. Les séances ont lieu dans l’auditorium du Centre français de culture et de coopération Rue Madrasat al-Huquq al-firansiyya. Après un premier colloque (Damas, 2010) proposant une réflexion historiographique, l’équipe Ifao – Ifpo organise une deuxième manifestation consacrée à la guerre et à la paix. C’est en tant que phénomènes culturels et sociaux qu’ils seront envisagés, en adoptant une démarche pluridisciplinaire (historique, archéologique, anthropologique…) seule à même d’aider à comprendre en quoi ces phénomènes modelèrent en profondeur les sociétés proche-orientales, du IVe/Xe au IXe/XVe siècle. Cinq axes ont été privilégiés : la paix : un processus évolutif ; fortifications, culture matérielle et patrimoine ; des sociétés en guerre ; les femmes et la guerre ; corps en guerre.
