Research residencies at the Maison française d'Oxford
La Maison française d’Oxford (MFO, USR 3129, UMIFRE 11) accueille des chercheurs CNRS et/ou des enseignants-chercheurs en provenance des établissements supérieurs d’enseignement et de recherche français pour une durée de deux années consécutives. Ces chercheurs ou enseignants-chercheurs doivent présenter des projets de recherche s’inscrivant dans une perspective interdisciplinaire (si possible sciences humaines/sciences exactes ou humanités numériques) et privilégiant une approche franco-britannique. Ces projets de recherche devront, de préférence, être en synergie avec les disciplines et thématiques prioritaires définies pour l’année en cours, et/ou avec les axes de recherche existants de la MFO présentés sur le site internet.

Paper, airwaves, screen: from text to audience in African popular culture
This conference aims to reflect on the critical spaces of reading and listening that occur in and around popular cultural texts in Africa – from songs, magazines, romance fiction, and hip-hop lyrics, to blogs, facebook posts, and urban inscriptions. Drawing on the methods of cultural studies, material print cultures, and the sociology of reception, we seek to engage with the critical vocabulary generated by those spaces of reception at a time of transition for the book object and the reading practices which accompany it. How can this material be researched (archives, interviews, ethnographic observation, digitisation, databases)? How is/might it be integrated into teaching across disciplines?

Association for the Study of Modern & Contemporary France annual conference
Dans le cadre du congrès annuel de l'« Association for the Study of Modern and Contemporary France » (ASMCF), nous proposons aux doctorants de participer à un concours de posters. Bien que le colloque soit intitulé « Les mythes en question », il n’y a aucune limitation du thème pour le concours des posters, et nous invitons des doctorants et des étudiants en master 2 à présenter un poster sur tout thème lié aux études sur la France moderne et contemporaine, et d’en profiter pour diffuser leurs sujets de recherche.

The century of lightness: emergences of a paradigm from the 18th century in France
Au dix-huitième siècle, le concept de légèreté semble envahir tous les domaines des connaissances humaines, de la morale à la physique, des inventions aérostatiques aux créations artistiques. Perpétuant cette image d’un âge léger, depuis le dix-neuvième siècle bourgeois, industrieux mais aussi nostalgique du temps des fêtes galantes, jusqu’à notre époque célébrant la frivolité (et la commercialité) des années de Marie-Antoinette et de Fragonard, le dix-huitième siècle français en sa légèreté n’a jamais cessé de séduire. Ainsi, qu’elle soit l’objet d’une conquête (scientifique, morale, esthétique, etc.) ou de constructions historiques, la légèreté du dix-huitième siècle s’impose comme un paradigme dont il s’agira de soulever les enjeux, dans une perspective critique et historiographique.

Francophone and Anglophone poetics throug the war and its aftermath
Colloque international bilingue organisé conjointement par la Maison Française d'Oxford et Madgalen College. L'objet de cet événement sera d'interroger à travers des perspectives littéraires, historiques, stylistiques et linguistiques les littératures de témoignage anglophones et francophones de la Grande Guerre, en questionnant les moyens que mobilisèrent les écrivains pour répondre aux bouleversements occasionnés par le conflit. Une attention particulière sera accordée aux évolutions de la langue, des genres ou encore du personnel romanesque, mais aussi à leurs permanences respectives, tout aussi instructives dans l'optique d'une saisie des enjeux éthiques, esthétiques et politiques de la période.

Cette journée d'études pour les doctorants invite des communications liées aux thèmes indiqués dans le titre de la journée, « Localité et globalité ». Elle est ouverte aux doctorant-e-s qui spécialisent dans les domaines d'histoire, de la littérature, des sciences sociales, et tout ce qui est lié à l'étude de la civilisation française. Il y aura aussi des séances de formation et approfondissement professionnel au matin, plus une intervention keynote de Claire Eldridge (Southampton).

San-Antonio international: representations, circulation, translations, exchanges
The subject of this two-day conference is the exchange processes between French and International cultures at play in and around the work of Crime Fiction author Frédéric Dard. Having started his literary career in 1938 and published more than 250 books until his death in 2000, the author is not only one of the most prolific and successful in the history of European literature, he is a very public figure too, having enjoyed intense media and critical attention in the last decades of his career. Identified mainly with the almost 200 San-Antonio novels he wrote between 1949 and 2000, the most popular and longest series of Crime novels written by a single French author, his image has been distorted by the bulk, preponderance and largely domestic nature of San-Antonio’s success.

The important roles played by literature and by autonomous frameworks of discussion in the formation of a democratic public space, in Europe at the time of the Enlightenment, are well known. How can we, in a now globalized world, rethink the question of possible links between literature and democracy – whether we define the latter as a form of society (the exchange of words and discourses), a problem, or a moment in time? How can we define the place of literature in the public space as it is now configured?

Le Clézio réunit textes critiques, témoignages, entretiens, notes de lectures et documents inédits relatifs à l'oeuvre de J.M.G. Le Clézio. Ce numéro 8 des Cahiers Le Clézio « Les enjeux philosophiques de l’œuvre de J.M.G. Le Clézio » se propose d'examiner le rapport entre l'œuvre de J.M.G. Le Clézio et les thèmes philosophiques présents à travers ses romans et ses essais.
