  Poetics, Politics and the Ruin in Cinema and Theatre since 1945

  References to Ancient times have been made in Europe between the two World Wars and the Classical served the idea of “a return to order” considered by some as necessary after the heresies of the avant-gardes. Indeed, the Classical has been manipulated by Fascist and Nazi ideologies in orchestrating the Second World War and the Holocaust. This conference intends to study how artistic processes as well as works of theatre and cinema record the historical and artistic consequences of this trauma in Europe by reinventing Antiquity, in particular, by working with ruins both politically and poetically. While this research is initially rooted in classical reception and theatre and cinema studies, the conference intends to dialogue with other fields including archaeology, aesthetic philosophy, political sciences, anthropology, and media theory.

  Protest: forms and aspects of phenomena of protest in the arts and culture in France and the French-speaking world

  Journée des doctorants de la Society for French Studies 2016

  Propre à l’activité humaine, la manifestation comme forme de protestation permet aux individus d’exprimer leur mécontentement vis-à-vis des structures sociales et des hiérarchies de pouvoir hégémoniques existantes. Les formes de manifestations varient selon les contextes et périodes, allant de l’expression du mécontentement personnel aux appels aux changements révolutionnaires. L’acte de manifester peut donc être individuel ou collectif, personnel ou politique, spontané ou organisé, mais il est presque toujours orienté vers la déstabilisation du statu quo et vise souvent à proposer de nouvelles façons d’exister. À travers l’histoire, les manifestations, qu’elles soient légales ou non, ont ainsi permis aux peuples de renverser des régimes autoritaires, exposer et confronter des déséquilibres de pouvoir, ou encore d’améliorer les conditions de vie des individus privés de droits sociaux.

  Ce panel a pour objectif de réunir des chercheurs d’horizons disciplinaires et professionnels différents (anthropologie, archéologie, cultural studies, muséologie, métiers du patrimoine...) afin de mener une réflexion interdisciplinaire sur les collaborations et fertilisations théoriques et méthodologiques entre l’anthropologie et les heritage studies. Nous nous interrogerons également sur l'impact de nos recherches sur les publics, les perceptions et les savoirs indigènes, les politiques institutionnelles, et sur l'engagement social et éthique des chercheurs.

  Around the notion of imperial art

  The theme of the next Leeds International Medieval Congress in 2014  is “Empire". The Art-Hist project would like to explore topics dealing with “Imperial images and shapes: historical and historiographical approaches” and try to answer some questions: Does an imperial art exist during Carolingian or Ottonian Empire? How can it be defined? What can recall or evoke, in medieval works of art, the idea or concept of Empire? How does this principle of evocation work in artistic creation? How did emperors use these forms or images to build their own power and history?
