Valorization, preservation and challenges in France, Europe and the world

The aim of this symposium is to put into perspective the different dimensions of a common heritage stemming from the garden city concept developed by Ebenezer Howard in 1898. An overview of the situation, a comparative approach and postulations on possible futures are expected. Four lines of thought and questioning are envisaged. The themes will transversally address the dimension of the built environment and the outdoor space, at different scales encompassing collective spaces of sociability, materiality of places, representations, practices, and so forth.

Ledoux - the architect, the book, the writer and the Enlightenment

Claude-Nicolas Ledoux (1734-1806) figure parmi les architectes les plus célèbres, voire les plus emblématiques, du siècle des Lumières. En revanche, il est resté, sinon moins connu, du moins très peu étudié, comme écrivain. Son livre, L’Architecture considérée sous le rapport de l’art, des mœurs et de la législation (1804), très souvent cité, et auquel les historiens empruntent des formules saisissantes et des passages frappants pour illustrer son œuvre d’architecte, est pourtant rarement envisagé pour lui-même, dans la fabrique littéraire de son texte, ou dans sa genèse matérielle et éditoriale comme livre.

1917-2017: Comparative Looks on the Soviet Artistic Avant-Gardes

The Soviet artistic avant-gardes have been raising a specific interest for a long time. For instance, their multiple practices, their theoretical apparatus, their opuses as well as the influences they exerted have been largely surveyed by the academic world. Ever since the 1990’s a reappraisal of the multiple reuses and reinterpretations of those “avant-gardes” have been carried out. Our international symposium aims to question and put into context that reappraisal and the renewal it induces in the field of scholarly research. The year 2017 as an historical landmark, the centenary of the Russian revolutions, offers a conducive environment for such reflections and thoughts. While evocating various and contradictory narratives, this centenary leads to rethink the vast array of meanings embodied by the revolutionary events as well as to shed a new light on the opuses they produced or lived through.

Ces questions doivent nous amener à adopter un point de vue qui se situerait à l'endroit où la fabrication sérielle a cessé de produire : sa fin, définitive et effective. Depuis cet endroit, qui peut tout à la fois être l'endroit d'un accomplissement, d'une apothéose, comme celui d'un accident ou d'un évanouissement, nous pouvons adopter deux points de vue : voir quelle œuvre a été produite, mais aussi voir ce qu'elle a laissé derrière elle, après elle.

Following the study days dedicated to “architectural and town planning professions faced with the involvement of residents and users” in 2012 and “sustainable town planning and architecture know-how and models” in 2013, the aim of the Ramau 2014 conferences is to concentrate on the relations between sustainability and “management” in the field of urban development and architecture. The incorporation of sustainable development in architectural, urban and landscaping operations seems to have the effect of increasing the concern for management logic in the project process.

Normes techniques, référentiels, labels, certifications…la normalisation, entendue au sens large, est un phénomène qui s’accélère depuis quelques décennies et qui gagne sans cesse de nouveaux secteurs d’application. Le monde actuel pourrait désormais être caractérisé comme étant celui des normes, et une gouvernance (plutôt transnationale) des échanges économiques par des normes a priori « volontaires » serait en train de se substituer aux multiples réglementations (essentiellement nationales) qui jusqu’à ces dernières décennies gouvernaient ces échanges. La fabrique d’un bien commun dans le cadre des démarches de normalisation revêt alors un certain nombre d’enjeux, de controverses, que l'atelier d'aujourd'hui essaiera de mettre en exergue.

Representing South African cities

This conference proposes to present the latest developments in the research on South African cities, but also to offer an opportunity for academics from various fields (literature, social sciences, architecture, geography, visual arts, etc.) to compare their respective analysis and their theoretical conclusions with the imaginative, artistic representations of the cities of South Africa. The convenors therefore not only invite researchers from all fields to come and present their latest work on South African cities, but also strongly encourage papers which offer a cross-disciplinary approach, or joint presentations between researchers from various fields or academics and artists (writers, directors, photographs). Some major actors of the literary and art scene will be present to expose their views and discuss their works with researchers as well as with a wider, more general audience.This conference is part of the Official Season of South Africa in France.
