  The pontificate of Pious XII (1939-1958) on the eve of the opening of the Vatican archives

  Historiographical appraisals and research perspectives

  Le 4 mars 2019, le pape François annonçait l’ouverture, prévue pour le 2 mars 2020, des archives vaticanes concernant le pontificat de Pie XII (1939-1958). Cette nouvelle a suscité l’attention de l’opinion publique internationale. Sur cette période très riche tant pour l’histoire politique, religieuse que culturelle de l’Europe et du monde, les perspectives s’annoncent vastes et aiguisent les appétits historiens. Dans ce contexte d’ouverture prometteuse, ce séminaire propose d’établir un état des lieux de l’historiographie abondante – et souvent polarisée – sur le pontificat du pape Pacelli, mais aussi d’identifier des pistes d’études, tout en nourrissant une dynamique collective de recherche.

  Decentered Mormonism

  Assessing 180 Years of International Expansion

  Following a pattern of itinerant preachers, inherited from the Second Great Awakening context from which their religion emerged, and from New Testament proselytes, Mormon missionaries began as early as June 1830 to go on missions. First, they traveled within the United States and Canada; then, looking beyond North America, they began to take their religion across the world starting with a mission to England as early as 1837. While the movement can do nothing about the fact that it originated in the United States, we hope the presentations in the conference will help determine on the one hand whether and to what extent a numerically “decentered” Mormonism also means a de-americanized Mormonism. On the other hand, we expect the communications to help come to an informed opinion on the place of other cultures in the movement, on how expansion contributes to interaction with local, state authorities and the extent of its localization.

  Gallows from the Middle Ages to the modern era - Comparative approaches

  Ce colloque s’inscrit dans le programme de recherche de la Maison des sciences de l’homme d’Aquitaine « La gouvernance de l’État entre contestation et médiation. La souveraineté négociée en justice de l’Aquitaine à l’Espagne du Nord (XIII^e-XIX^e s.) », dirigé par Martine Charageat (Bordeaux 3) et soutenu par le Conseil régional d’Aquitaine. Le thème des fourches patibulaires, structures judiciaires dédiées à la pendaison et à l’exposition de corps pendus, n’a en effet été que très peu et très partiellement discuté en France. Pourtant, l’histoire des exécutions publiques connaît actuellement un regain d’intérêt à la faveur, notamment, de recherches axées sur le rituel judiciaire. Placées sous le signe l’interdisciplinarité, ces journées invitent dès lors à repenser et à réévaluer les usages des fourches patibulaires pour les époques médiévale et moderne.
