Sedition and revolt in modern european political thought
We wish to bring together international contributors once more in a discussion of the political thought brought about by various uprisings between the end of the Middle Ages and the modern era, whether it be reflections over a particular event, or more general considerations over the causes of sedition and protest movements, the means to prevent or suppress new episodes, and their adverse – or regenerative – effects. This analysis will focus on political writings composed for government use or for a wider audience – memoirs and reports, as well as treatises on the statecraft that proliferated throughout Europe in the modern era and saw wide acceptance. There is a tendency in the current literature to make use of historical examples that are distant in time and place, and a need to consider the possible repercussions of theoretical reflection from experience drawn from recent or contemporary revolts.

Le symposium propose une approche des conflits armés (révolutions, guerres civiles, soulèvements, révoltes, émeutes, « pronunciamientos ») en Amérique latine / Amérique Ibérique pendant le processus de construction et de consolidation de l’État, depuis la période qui a suivi les indépendances et jusqu’au début du XXe siècle. Il s’intéresse à la circulation d’acteurs, de pratiques et de concepts politiques dans le cadre des espaces transnationaux, tout en prenant de la distance face à une histoire strictement « nationale », politique et militaire.

The editorial board of "Forma. Revista d’Humanitats" journal is pleased to inform that the call for the reception of articles, reviews, critics and states of the Art for their publication in the next monographic number: Language and alterity. Limits and excesses in the construction of meaning is currently open. In this number we expect to stimulate a debate within the humanistic disciplines revolving around problématiques stirred by the types of comprehension and artistic representation, the experiences and languages of the ineffable, poetic obscurity, autonomy and transgression of the resources of artistic expression, excess and horror. These experiences and languages, in their transgression and excess of the artistic normative structures, promote studies concerning their difference and alterity in relation to the traditional models of comprehension and representation.

The Grenada war in its European context
La guerre de Grenade, qui conduit à la reddition de la capitale nasride en janvier 1492, constitue l’un des épisodes les plus importants de la confrontation entre chrétienté et islam à la fin du Moyen Âge. Une bibliographie très abondante lui a donc été consacrée mais l’intérêt pour le conflit s’est surtout manifesté parmi les chercheurs espagnols et portugais. En conséquence, l’approche dominante de la guerre de Grenade est de type horizontal : elle est étudiée comme la dernière étape d’une longue confrontation que certains se refusent désormais à appeler Reconquête. La rencontre qui se tiendra à Grenade les 9 et 10 mai 2013 visera à promouvoir une lecture verticale – c’est-à-dire synchronique – de l’événement.

Uprisings, revolts, and revolutions in the Spanish monarch in the Habsbourg era
Les manifestations violentes de la contestation politique ont fait l’objet ces dernières années de travaux fondés sur de nouvelles approches méthodologiques qui ont révélé l’importance des proclamations, pamphlets et autres « guerres de plumes » dans la préparation, le déroulement et la répression des insurrections. S’inscrivant dans ces nouvelles orientations de recherche, ce séminaire se propose de mener une étude plus systématique des productions culturelles de toute nature qui ont accompagné les soulèvements et révoltes – qualifiés dans certains cas de révolutions – qui se sont produits dans la monarchie espagnole sous les Habsbourg. Plus précisément, nous nous intéresserons à des mouvements qui, quel que soit le nom qu’on leur a donné au moment des faits, ont mis en cause la souveraineté du monarque, tels que les Comunidades et les tentatives (réussies ou non) de sécession en Catalogne, au Portugal, dans les Flandres et dans certaines des possessions italiennes (Naples et Messine par exemple). -

Desertions, Counter-movements and Forced Mobilities in the Contemporary City
First International Conference on Anthropology of Urban Conflict
Social conflict is inherent in urban society in general. Social conflict is a historic constant that makes cities the epicenter of revolt in all of its forms. Despite our attempts to systematically classify the varied logics that lay behind existing disparate scales of uprising, e.g. large mass movements, small groups organized around blueprint actions, or individuals that quietly rebelled with daily contempt, to date it has not been possible to bring them all under a common systemic defiance. Political movements vs. social movements, peaceful vs. violent actions, organization vs. spontaneity, etc., these are old dichotomies overcome by the force of the present situation. So, how does conflict come about in contemporary cities? The varied kinds of agitation featured in the current crisis are a good example of the different types of rebellion against public order, the norms that sustain it, and the authorities that implement them. From a demonstration against government cuts to apolitical graffiti somewhere on the urban fringe, from insubordination against mortgage repossessions to the refusal to pay for the use of public transport, from symbolic happenings performed in public spaces to the defense, at any cost, of squatted housing, of neighborhood resistance against evictions or of the opposition to identification raids on undocumented migrants.
