  Call for papers - Middle Ages

  Water in north western European cities in the early Middle Ages (4th-12th centuries)

  A vector of transformation of the urban space

  Starting from the premise that a variety of towns existed during the early Middle Ages (towns of Roman origin, or growing up around a monastery, a defensive site or an economic hub), we propose to assess, in North-West Europe, the role of water in these towns at three progressive levels: i) that of different users within a town, ii) at the level of the town as a whole, and iii) in the creation of urban networks. Our purpose is to draw together the most recent research, highlighting this subject through archaeological discoveries as well as critical analysis of written sources.

  Economic policies and strategies in the Medieval Atlantic city

  Nájera. 17th International Meetings of the Middle Ages

  International Meetings of the Middle Ages in Nájera have been proposed as an international congress in the field of study and dissemination of Medieval History since 2003. The theme for this year’s meetings is Economic policies and strategies in the Medieval Atlantic City. Atlantic city, arose in the Middle Ages, was based on a series of key factors -such as the geographical features, infrastructures and very dynamic societies-, but also because urban policies adopted, in those peripheral cities due to its geographical location, some common and different characteristics from the cities of the interior of the continent, whose economic policies and strategies we are proposing to analyze in this conference.

  Le XXIX^e colloque international d'Issoire (Puy-de-Dôme) sur l'époque romane se tiendra les vendredi et samedi 11 et 12 septembre 2019 sur le thème « Intra et extra muros. La ville à l'époque romane (XI^e-début XIII^e siècle). Matérialité, Images, imaginaire ». L'appel s'adresse aux historiens de l'Art, historiens, archéologues, littéraires, linguistes médiévistes et s'ouvre également aux étudiants de master 2 et aux doctorants.

  Managing uncertainty and medieval markets

  La réflexion historique récente sur les caractères des marchés médiévaux a mis en relief l’importance de fides dans les échanges marchands : assurer le bien commun détermine la légitimité des pratiques économiques. Les garanties contre le risque – juridiques, notariales, judiciaires, scripturales – nous informent sur les modes qui permettent également de penser l’incertitude dans un monde perçu comme instable. Comment les hommes d’affaires polyvalents conçoivent-ils cette notion d’incertitude ? Comment font-ils leurs choix ? Pouvons-nous saisir des stratégies à œuvre ? Ces entrepreneurs, ces citoyens, ces experts envisagent des questions pratiques pour homogénéiser le monde incertain et fluctuant de l’échange : fixer un (juste) prix, assurer les contrats portant sur des choses incertaines, conforter l’amitié entre associés, hiérarchiser les droits et élaborer un droit commun.

  La Casa de Velázquez et l’Institut archéologique allemand de Madrid organisent la septième édition de leur atelier de formation pour jeunes chercheurs du 17 au 21 juin 2013, à Madrid, coordonnée cette année par Bertrand Goffaux, Dirce Marzoli et Fedor Schlimbach. Les travaux porteront cette année sur le paysage religieux urbain et suburbain en Occident, entre le I^e et le VIe siècle ap. J.-C.
