  Experts and Expertise in the League of Nations Mandates

  Figures, Fields and Tools

  Our vantage point is to consider the growing in importance of expertise during the twentieth century within the management of the colonial world and hence to study the emergence of the international sphere as a level of decision making. The purpose of this conference is to investigate the influence of early international agendas, advanced across the colonial world by experts operating in the orbit of international organizations. The investigation should also focus on the procedures and framework of international recognition of expertise at the intersection of the colonial and the international spheres. A first line of enquiry tackles the relations between the epistemologies that underpinned scientific knowledge in the colony and the metropolis. Another one looks into the sites of production of Mandatory expertise. Finally, we want to investigate the explicitly evolutionary conceptual framework for the mandates and its influence on the work of experts. We invite contributions dealing with the figure of the expert, whether official or not, and the various fields and tools of Mandatory expertise. Part and parcel of our reflexion is also a study of the limits and scope of expertise.

  The free French and the world

  Dès l'appel du 18 juin 1940, le général de Gaulle perçoit les dimensions mondiales d'une guerre qui « n'est pas limitée au territoire malheureux » d'un pays et « n'est pas tranchée par la bataille de France ». Cette vision est fondatrice. Il en résulte pour la France libre une organisation immédiatement planétaire. Mais son effet se mesure également sur une plus longue échelle. Ce caractère mondial de la France libre sera étudié et débattu à l'occasion du colloque international organisé par la Fondation de la France libre au musée de l'armée. Il rassemble, sur deux jours, les contributions de vingt-huit chercheurs internationaux organisées en quatre sessions thématiques.

  Les Océaniens dans la première guerre mondiale

  Nation, nationalisme et sentiment d’appartenance

  Cet appel à communication et /ou à publication concerne la part prise par les îles et les États du Sud Pacifique dans la Grande Guerre (1914-1918) ainsi que ses conséquences notamment dans la mise en place du sentiment d’appartenance et du nationalisme insulaire. Le bombardement de la ville de Papeete par deux navires allemands, le 22 septembre 1914, plonge l’Océanie dans la guerre dès les premières semaines du conflit. Les chiffres, signes, symboles, et représentations de l'engagement du sud Pacifique dans le conflit sont souvent négligés, dispersés ou perdus au milieu d’autres implications, d’autres conséquences, d’autres signes. En conséquence, la part du Sud Pacifique dans la Grande guerre et ses conséquences, et non pas la Grande Guerre en elle-même, constitue l’objet d’un projet pluri-annuel de recherches.
