Images of the Equator - international exports / Equatorial representations internationally

Les tortues des Îles Galapagos, les têtes réduites de Jivaro, les neiges éternelles du Chimborazo, les chapeaux Panama… Autant de symboles mondialement connus qui ont pour point commun de venir d'Équateur. Ils interrogent les dynamiques de circulations internationales des idées, des personnes, des objets, questionnent l'exportation de la culture équatorienne à travers le monde et les processus de construction d'imaginaires sur l'Équateur dans le monde. À l'inverse, ils invitent également à s'intéresser à la manière dont ils sont perçus en Équateur, loin des arènes internationales. Ces dynamiques seront l'objet de la journée d'étude consacrée à l'Équateur et le monde. Comment l'Équateur s'expose sur la scène internationale ? Comment des mouvements internationaux ou transnationaux sont-ils appropriés, traduits, adaptés en Équateur ? Comment circulent les objets et les personnes équatorien.nes à travers le monde ? Afin de répondre à ces questions, nous proposons d'organiser la journée en trois tables rondes.

Health from an environmental perspective: public policies and citizen mobilisation

Issue 19 of the journal Amnis proposes to address this connection between health and the environment. In addition to the fact that the recent fire at the Lubrizol chemical storage plant in Rouen on the night of 25–26 September 2019 confirms the importance of this topic (which was decided on four months ago), there are three good reasons why Amnis should examine the impact of the environmental crisis on health. First, tackling this subject gives the journal the opportunity to continue its reflection on the key political and social questions facing contemporary societies. Second, the subject lends itself particularly well to multidisciplinary interpretations, which Amnis has been committed to encouraging since its creation. Third, the principle of social responsibility in research, which has always inspired its various contributors, can be showcased with this subject. The aim will be to take an objective look at the issues associated with the impact of the environmental crisis on health within a context in which public discourse tends to blur the boundaries and delegitimise the types of action taken by some social actors.

Mexican perspectives of France and the United States, 1821-1950

Le colloque programmé vise à analyser les représentations des voyageurs mexicains sur l'autre monde, la France et les États-Unis, pays visités par d'innombrables personnalités politiques et intellectuelles, ainsi que par des témoins anonymes, depuis l'indépendance du Mexique au milieu du XX^e siècle. Nous tenterons de déchiffrer ces témoignages mexicains à caractère privé et intime (épistolaires, mémoires, journaux intimes...) sans exclure les chroniques et documents publiés dans la presse sur le monde français et américain entre 1821 et 1950. Comment ces voyageurs, touristes cosmopolites, exilés politiques, artistes en herbe, diplomates ont-ils transcrit leur vision de l'autre, français ou américain ?

The recognition of women’s place in American societies has become a crucial social, cultural, political and economic issue, as evidenced by worldwide protest movements such as Ni Una Menos that started in Argentina – a feminist movement fighting against feminicides and gender-based violence – or the Women’s March against President Donald Trump in the United States. Whether these protests have to do with the struggle for women’s right to vote, the sexual revolution that started in the 1960s, or social movements denouncing gender-based violence in urban and rural environments, they highlight a continuity between yesterday’s feminist fights and their re-adaptation in the public space.

This international colloquium will be held from October 16th to 20th 2017, at Praia Vermelha campus from UFRJ, in joint partnership with the IX Migration Forum / Migratic 2017, it is the result of a collaborative and networking initiative organized by researchers from Brazil, France, Canada, Argentina, Spain, the United States, Uruguay, Chile, Ecuador and Martinique. The event’s goal is to put together researchers and experts from various countries to discuss the issue of migration in conjunction with the field of social communication, cultural theories, border studies and within the framework of notions such as politics, democracy and citizenship.

L’Afrique subsaharienne et l’Amérique latine sont liées de façon historique par le commerce triangulaire qui a fait déporter vers l’Amérique des millions d’individus arrachés à leurs terres ancestrales. Cette transplantation sur un continent nouveau, mal vécu par les esclaves, a permis de donner naissance à une culture spécifique, résurgence de la culture africaine et d’autres formes de cultures avec lesquelles les esclaves ont été mis en contact. Ce colloque entend donc questionner des notions de mémoire(s) et d'identité(s) en Afrique subsaharienne et en Amérique latine.

Tourisme, coopérations scientifiques et techniques, extractions de ressources, migrations sont autant de ponts tracés entre le centre géographique des Amériques et son extrémité septentrionale. Plus récemment, c’est dans les secteurs de la préservation de l’environnement, de la participation aux projets régionaux de développement, des migrations transnationales et de l’étude des mémoires partagées que ces relations transcontinentales opèrent leurs mutations afin de se présenter comme des éléments essentiels à la compréhension de « notre Amérique ».

This seminar is the first of a series of three talks which will take place in each of the cities explored. It offers a space for collaboration, reflection and exchanges where explorers, partners, associate members and other leading figures are invited to lend an outside perspective. It is an invitation both to reflect on the project itself and to promote a public discussion of its critical perspectives. For instance, what is “knowledge” for an artist, a researcher or an educator, and how is it constructed ? For what discourse and representations are artists, researchers in the humanities and educators responsible ? What research stance should be adopted to meet the challenges of interdisciplinarity and social space ? How do our disciplines of research, creation and social intervention revisit the historical motive for exploration and what relationship do they have with it ?

Pour une histoire des haltes et des rituels de l'étape en Amérique latine : lieux de vie ou non-lieux ? Comment les voyageurs hispano-américains ou européens, marchands, missionnaires ou soldats, femmes ou hommes, indiens ou créoles faisaient-ils étape sur le continent américain ? La topographie des lieux d’arrêts, l’économie qui leur a été associée, ont évolué avec la modernisation des moyens de transport, l’arrivée du chemin de fer et l’essor de la navigation à vapeur d’un côté et de l’autre du continent américain. Ces territoires du quotidien, à l’opposé de l’apparat des lieux de pouvoir, est-il possible de construire leur histoire parallèlement à l’histoire des moyens de transport et des voies de communication ?

The ruin

Sociétés journal devotes its next issue to the subject of “the ruin”. This issue aims to revisit and extend the notion of ruin considering its spatial, social, architectural, and urban imaginary. A Ruin is a representation and a pictorial resource of the landscape, is a metaphysical way of thought, a purpose and a primitive view. In this sense, memory, architecture and symbol, life and death, decay and rebirth, time and duration, rust and bones, the eternal communication, previous utopia and inner experience, the decomposition and recomposition, ecosophy and economics of conflict, obsolescence and "affordance", are some of the subjects that derive from ruin as status quo: an 'imaginal' foundation of the romanticism and a sensitivity of our contemporaneous world.
