The Epoch of Space. State and new perspectives

The next 8th, 9th and 10th of April it will take place at the University of Santiago de Compostela the international conference "The Epoch of Space. State and New Perspectives", where researchers from around the world will meet to discuss the spatial turn of humanities. This interdisciplinary event will bring together geographers, philologists, historians, philosophers, and other interested disciplines to review the current state of spatial humanities, share different approaches, research methods and discuss their future.

The epoch of space. State and new perspectives

For centuries, the study of time was one of the main academic interests in the field of Humanities. However, in the second half of the 20^th century, most scholars and philosophers shifted their focus to the question of space. The interest in studying this in the field of the arts has increased significantly in recent years, and is especially noticeable in the case of literary creations.The growing influence of ecocriticism and geocriticism is especially noticeable in digital humanities. The bridges recently built between these fields are already proving to be productive, as they have led to the development of new tools, approaches, and methodologies, such as deep mapping techniques and the spatial humanities. How have the disciplines evolved in recent years? Do we need to redefine the key concepts regarding space and place? Has our relationship with territory changed? Have we produced new ways of inhabiting space?

Canada – Québec – Caraïbe : connexions transaméricaines

Les liens entre la région Caraïbe, la province de Québec et le Canada sont anciens et diversifiés. Tourisme, coopérations scientifiques et techniques, extractions de ressources, migrations sont autant de ponts tracés entre le centre géographique des Amériques et son extrémité septentrionale. Plus récemment, c’est dans les secteurs de la préservation de l’environnement, de la participation aux projets régionaux de développement, des migrations transnationales et de l’étude des mémoires partagées que ces relations transcontinentales opèrent leurs mutations afin de se présenter comme des éléments essentiels à la compréhension de « notre Amérique ».

Interdisciplinary strategies and collaborations

This seminar is the first of a series of three talks which will take place in each of the cities explored. It offers a space for collaboration, reflection and exchanges where explorers, partners, associate members and other leading figures are invited to lend an outside perspective. It is an invitation both to reflect on the project itself and to promote a public discussion of its critical perspectives. For instance, what is “knowledge” for an artist, a researcher or an educator, and how is it constructed ? For what discourse and representations are artists, researchers in the humanities and educators responsible ? What research stance should be adopted to meet the challenges of interdisciplinarity and social space ? How do our disciplines of research, creation and social intervention revisit the historical motive for exploration and what relationship do they have with it ?

La ruine

La revue Société consacre son prochain numéro au sujet de la ruine. Ce numéro cherche à revisiter et élargir la notion de ruine en prenant en compte son imaginaire spatiale, social, architectural et urbain. Car la ruine est au même temps représentation et recours pictural du paysage, forme métaphysique de la pensée, destin et vision primitive. À cet égard, la mémoire, l’architecture et le symbole, la vie et la mort, la décadence et la renaissance, le temps et la durée, la rouille et l’ossature, la communication éternelle, l’utopie antérieure et l’expérience intérieur, la décomposition et la recomposition, l’écosophie et l’économie du conflit, l’obsolescence et l’affordance, seront quelques des questions à explorer et qui renvoient à l’état des choses qui est la ruine : fondement « imaginal » du romantisme et sensibilité propre de notre contemporanéité.
