The Epoch of Space. State and new perspectives

The next 8th, 9th and 10th of April it will take place at the University of Santiago de Compostela the international conference "The Epoch of Space. State and New Perspectives", where researchers from around the world will meet to discuss the spatial turn of humanities. This interdisciplinary event will bring together geographers, philologists, historians, philosophers, and other interested disciplines to review the current state of spatial humanities, share different approaches, research methods and discuss their future.

African Ivories

In the Atlantic World, 1400-1900

Since April 2015, the international team working on the project “African Ivories in the Atlantic World: a reassessment of Luso-African ivories” (Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia: PTDC/EPH-PAT/1810/2014), composed of 27 researchers from the University of Lisbon, the University of Évora and the Federal University of Minas Gerais in Brazil, has been researching the trade, circulation and production of raw and carved African ivory in the Atlantic area from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century. The team has identified and listed objects from Portuguese and Brazilian (Minas Gerais) collections, also collecting references and descriptions extant in written Portuguese sources. For the first time a selection of ivory pieces was subjected to lab tests with a view to helping establish their age and origin. The project research team has submitted proposals for re-interpreting material culture in the framework of its African contexts of production.

The “Landscapes” edition of dearq academic journal invites participants to reflect on what has globally been, principally since the beginning of the twentieth century, the evolution of the concept of landscape; the relevant methods of analysis; the methods of representation, of evaluation, and of teaching. This takes into consideration how the concept is a practical project tool that can be used for land-use planning, what landscape’s level of influence has been on the public policy decision-making process, what instruments and regulations have been used, and also how “landscape” and “territory” coexist.

Sciences, savoirs et pratiques des déchets

Dialogues entre mondes européens et américains

Ce colloque s’intéresse aux déchets comme objets de sciences, de savoirs et de pratiques. En proposant un dialogue entre chercheurs et acteurs français et des Amériques, il interrogera les modalités de construction de la connaissance portant sur les systèmes d’organisation et de représentation des déchets dans les mondes européens et américains. Ce projet cherche notamment à savoir si l’on peut qualifier de « tournant épistémologique » l’intérêt que les sciences sociales manifestent pour les déchets comme objet de recherche mais aussi comme défi pour l’organisation des territoires.

II Meeting of REPORT(H)A - Portuguese Network of Environmental History

The Center of History of the School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon and the Institute of Contemporary History of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of the NOVA University of Lisbon, are pleased to be hosting the II meeting of REPORT(H)A - Portuguese Network of Environmental History, in 2017 Spring. The cross cutting conference theme, Environmental Changes in Historical Perspective, is inscribed in transnational and transdisciplinary approaches, a challenge to the current academic research and debate in environmental sciences and humanities.

The study and design of landscape as a methodological problem

First Iberian Colloquium on Landscape

Landscapes present themselves as sceneries we have inherited, where we live, and from where we draw the resources needed to subsist as a civilisation and as a species. The result of our actions on this heritage will be the legacy to our descendants. In the beginning of the third millennium, the interest in the topic of landscape is increasingly important, transforming this discipline in a research platform where several fields of knowledge intersect. The aim of this colloquium is to reflect about the diversity of multidisciplinary aspects, analytical methods, and intervention techniques related to the study of landscape, establishing a forum focused on the future relationship between humanity and landscape.

Destruction et conservation en débat – L’histoire de l’environnement au Brésil dans une perspective pluridisciplinaire et transnationale

Ce workshop europeén vise à la fois à réaliser un état des lieux de l'histoire environnementale brésilienne et à discuter des nouvelles perspectives qui se présentent à ce champ d’études. La discipline de l’histoire environnementale y sera envisagée au sens large, impliquant tout à la fois les études sur les représentations, les politiques, et les changements matériels qui résultent de l'interaction entre « humains » et « non-humains ».
