    American cities facing global changes

Interdisciplinary Journal of Papers on the Americas (RITA) nr. 13

Nowadays, the assessment of environmental changes worldwide is indisputable. Interdependent processes – such as global warming, the extinction of species, soil depletion and scarce energy resources – deeply alter the living conditions in our societies, from a material and symbolic point of view. These systemic transformations go well beyond the physical environment or climate change; they can be understood thanks to the concept of “global changes” that has become a main research topic in the fields of social and environmental sciences over the past thirty years. For its thirteenth issue, RITA will dedicate its section Thema to American cities facing global changes.

The imagination, construction and habitation of Earth

    ICHT 2017

The role of small towns in building Medieval Europe

It is our aim to promote an approach to urban studies which, repeatedly but discontinuously, appears on the horizon of historical, geographical, sociological and anthropological research, always with a certain stigma as an inferior and unattractive subject of analysis. Inferior, because each time it has been considered on a comparative scale, it comes up against the variability of definitions of its designating attribute. It is unattractive inasmuch as it is not satisfied by scientific approaches rooted in the intention to capture decisive and major development processes. By combining several scientific areas, this conference aims to give a voice to the small towns of a Medieval Europe, increasingly perceived as "moving".

Intermediate Groups in the Portuguese Dominions, 16th-18th century

Revista de História (Universidade de São Paulo)

The Revista de História of the University of São Paulo (Brazil) invites interested scholars to submit proposals for articles to be published as part of a ‘dossier’ concerning intermediate groups in the Portuguese dominions on the Early Modern Age. Throughout that period, ‘middle people’ strove to assert themselves in rural areas and helped to shape old and new urban centers in the Portuguese World, corresponding to an increased demand for specialized services and ensuring the necessary extensions of royal representation functions and Church activities. Even though almost non-existent in juridical or normative terms, those groups were recognized both by nationals and foreigners as a complex and vibrant intermediate social layer. Time has come to try and distinguish its specificities, trends of formation and effective roles in social dynamics.

American cities in the 21st Century : linguistic, cultural and social representations

    Amerika volume 9

Volume 9 in the Amerika series will have an interdisciplinary perspective: encompassing aesthetic representations (literature, cinema, art), urbanism, sociology, anthropology and linguistics. This plural approach will enable us to establish the basis of an analysis of the new “realities” of American cities in the 21st Century, whilst examining the paths followed by aesthetic and social representations of these new urban landscapes. The idea of devoting this volume of Amerika to the various representations of 20th century American cities emanated from the theme of the 19th Congress of the German Association of Hispanists which took place in Munster from 20-23 March 2013. The panel, comprising 20 specialists, was organized by Sabine Schlickers and Victoria Torres.
