Trade unions, conflictand direct action in the Americas and in Europe
From the end of the 19th century to the 1980s
Le syndicalisme peut se définir, sur un plan général, comme un outil collectif de défense des intérêts matériels et moraux d'un groupe de salarié·e·s, organisé·e·s par métier ou par branche d'activité ou, de manière croissante au cours du XXe siècle, sur une base intercatégorielle. Très tôt, dès la fin du XIXe, et indépendamment des régimes politiques au sein desquels il évolue, les militant·e·s syndicaux·le·s se posent la question des modalités d'action collective et de défense des intérêts moraux et matériels du mouvement ouvrier, entendu au sens large du terme. L'action du Premier mai 1886 à Chicago et le massacre de Haymarket Square, qui lui succède, le 4 mai, sont, en ce sens, des moments fondateurs de la période à laquelle le colloque sera consacré.

Science and madness, extravagance, exception
Alchemists, magicians, outlaw scientists in italian culture
This volume aims at exploring the ways of science as excess and madness (see Zangrandi 2011, 2017; Garlaschelli and Carrer 2017) or, in less tragic forms, as an opportunity to explore new paths of knowledge. Another goal is to shed light on the character’s evolution, tracing the roots of a literary and cultural trope that, since the 20th century, takes on multiple configurations and plays manifold functions. Looking back to the past, this theme can be traced in the Romanticism’s rejection of the exact science and in the particular declination proposed by Leopardi in his Operette morali, or even in the disquieting image of the alchemist of the Renaissance, whose superior knowledge of natural phenomena turns into the extreme and a punishable hybris.

Work, between action and sufferance
Les hommes n’ont jamais cessé de montrer une profonde ambivalence à l’égard du travail, activité tantôt valorisée, tantôt dévalorisée, tantôt rangée du côté de l’action voire de la création, tantôt du côté de l’infortune et de la nécessité, tantôt considérée comme une souffrance, une punition ou une calamité, tantôt comme un moyen de salut, de libération, d’accès à la sphère éthique et à la reconnaissance. Du fond de l’âge grec, depuis Hésiode et au-delà, comme dans la tradition biblique, nous retrouvons trace de semblable ambivalence, bipolarité inscrite au cœur même de l’expérience du travail. Bien sûr, les traditions et les cultures accusent des traits qui les distinguent voire les opposent quant à l’importance accordée à chacune de ces polarités constitutives de la problématique du travail, en lien avec leur spiritualité religieuse et leur idéologie sociale et politique. Mais quelles que soient ces différences d’approches et d’accents, force est de constater qu’elles ne sont pas parvenues à effacer complètement la dimension alter du travail qu’elles s’efforcent parfois de conjurer, et à convaincre ce faisant de l’unidimensionnalité principielle (positive ou négative, morale ou sociale) du travail humain. Ces journées d’étude seront l’occasion de travailler quelques grandes lignes de cette antinomie, de cette bipolarité de l’agir et du pâtir qui anime la problématique du travail.

The Agreements of the Holy See with States (19th-21st Centuries)
Models and Transformations, from Confessional States to Religious Freedom
This conference will explore the international legal agreements signed between the Holy See and individual states, which often but not always took the form of concordats and similar conventions. Its central focus will be to examine these conventions in light of diplomatic practices, as well as in relation to the political and religious dynamics of the nineteenth through the twenty-first centuries, notably the principles and requirements that comprised modernity. This entails assessing the historical evolution of the typology, method, content, scope, and spaces concerned.

Ces journées d'études qui sont organisées dans le cadre du projet Textual Genetics and chaotic system. A new approach to the writing process financé par le Ministère Italien de l'instruction, de l'université et de la recherche, ont pour objectif d’instaurer un dialogue entre les jeunes chercheurs en critique génétique venant d’Italie et de l’étranger et de leur offrir un moment d’approfondissement méthodologique et d’échange scientifique. Ainsi, après les communications de spécialistes qui approcheront l’histoire, les méthodes et les développements interdisciplinaires de la critique génétique, les journées d’études feront place aux contributions des chercheurs qui pourront présenter leurs travaux en cours.

The clothing of politics: dress, appearances and political identities (XIXth-XXth centuries)

Fashion and clothing, a crucial aspect of social life, has aroused strong interest in recent years in many different fields of the social and human sciences. After a long period of neglect, many historians have begun to develop new approaches to the experience of dress as a situated bodily practice and as a form of language, always allusive and polysemic. The special issue of Contemporanea aims to engage in a reflection on the relationship between clothing and politics in the widest sense of the term, analyzing how “appearances” can express, perform and negotiate political, ideological, and national identities.

Alors que l’on fête en 2016 le quatre-vingtième anniversaire du célèbre essai de Walter Benjamin « Le Conteur [Der Erzähler] » (1936), il semble important de revenir à cette figure qui, telle que la définit le critique allemand, se trouve aujourd’hui au croisement de plusieurs champs d’étude. Ce numéro propose de se pencher sur cet imaginaire dans une perspective monographique, comparatiste et intermédiale, en interrogeant la permanence de cette figure dans l’après du temps supposé réel des conteurs dans la littérature et les arts à partir du XIXe siècle. Entre singulier et pluriel, entre conservatisme et modernité, que révèlent ces figurations conteuses sur les nouvelles manières de raconter et les valeurs du récit moderne ?

This symposium’s purpose is to enlighten the particularity of the political culture of French Mediterranean elites, through an analysis of their reactions to armed conflicts in the Mediterranean world during the late modern era. It will mainly focus on representatives’behaviour during these conflicts. Bound to their political or religious beliefs, to geographical or cultural solidarities, their behaviour questions the way they do (or don’t) apply governmental policy, their management of the consequences of those conflicts on the territory, their personal commitment in favour of some of the protagonists, but also the political uses of those events and the footprints or lasting divisions they might have left in their wake.

Forms and effects of the informal action in the Caribbean, between legality and illegality (XVII-XXI century)
What is the role of informal institutions in the evolution of the economic, political and social aspects of Caribbean basin? Diacronie will analyze the economic and social development of the area, focusing on the role played by informal actors, namely the ones moving between legality and illegality, that were able (or are able) to give the individual (no matter if a customer, consumer or merchant) what the laws prohibit. The objective is to examine both contemporary phenomena and phenomena which, although related to the early modern age, have generated long-term consequences in the history of the regions related to it.
