Producing maps - transborder and intercultural representations from Antiquity to the present day

The conference aims to reflect on and debate the cartography of transboundary and intercultural phenomena. Through an international lens, and drawing from multiple disciplines, it ought to contribute to the conceptualisation of maps independent of political borders by inviting us to think about them across three axes: time (How compatible have intercultural phenomena and cartographic enterprises been throughout history?), space (what are the possible approaches when mapping intercultural or cross-border phenomena depending on the area of study, of creation and of diffusion of maps?), and method (how/why can making maps show such phenomena?).

    The Berlin Airlift

A Realm of Memory of the Cold War

Whether or not “the entire world” was looking at Berlin, as Reuter asserted, is one of the central questions to be addressed at our conference. Starting from the “frontline city” of Berlin, we will cast our glance to West Germany and its neighboring countries in order not only to frame the Berlin Airlift as a transnational memorial of the Cold War, but also to address, from outside, the question of whether Berlin was really the international focus of the East-West conflict back then, as the press and academia so often portray it.

Asking oneself questions on the concept of « transmission » in the field of sociology or history of immigration, one can refer to Max Weber’s observation: “All differences in ‘customs’ can feed a specific feeling of ‘honor’ and ‘dignity’ within those who carry them out. One can forget the original motives that gave birth to diverse lifestyles and the contrasts continue being perpetuated as ‘conventions’.” (Economie et Société, Vol.2, Pocket 1995, p. 128) Nearly a century later, can this observation still be considered as a topical subject? It is exactly this question that the conference offers to verify, summoning around the syntagm “process of transmission” the different disciplinary fields of migratory research.

    Food and Weather

    Contemporary art and margins
