Alsace and the 1918 switch - expulsions, migrations, mobilities

    The Berlin Airlift

A Realm of Memory of the Cold War

Whether or not “the entire world” was looking at Berlin, as Reuter asserted, is one of the central questions to be addressed at our conference. Starting from the “frontline city” of Berlin, we will cast our glance to West Germany and its neighboring countries in order not only to frame the Berlin Airlift as a transnational memorial of the Cold War, but also to address, from outside, the question of whether Berlin was really the international focus of the East-West conflict back then, as the press and academia so often portray it.

War and experiences of European-ness: convergences, transfers and circulations (1900–1950)

National societies do not function in closed space. The spread of new communication and transport means during the second half of the 19th century has brought together formerly distant regions of the European continent and created new spaces for economic and information exchanges. This process of convergence provided a basis for a larger "community of Europeans". At the same time, a somewhat contradictory development took place through the strengthening of nationalist ideas and movements leading to the foundation of so-called "nation-states" in Central, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe and the intensification of tensions between different ethnic groups and minorities. European societies therefore experienced contradictory changes, both rapprochement on a transnational level and withdrawal to the national space.

    “People” and Power(s) in Representation

    Nordic and Germanic Space

The Kiel Treaty, signed on 14 January 1814, marks a milestone in European and Scandinavian history as it ended armed conflicts between the realms of Sweden and Denmark. In order to celebrate its 200th anniversary, this conference will focus on national propaganda and representations of power through the representation of the people. The period under study spans from the 14th century to 1814. It includes the Scandinavian realms’ stabilization as well as the emergence of a national sentiment centered on the homeland, the ruler or the reigning power and ends with the emergence of nationalism in Europe.

    Defenders of Peace 1899-1917
