Violence: An international journal

Le terrorisme exerce un impact sur les sociétés qu’il atteint ou qu’il vise. Cet impact peut être ponctuel, ou limité. Mais aujourd’hui, avec l’islamisme radical et le terrorisme d’Al-Qaïda, puis de Daech, le phénomène pèse lourdement, et durablement, même s’il évolue dans le temps. Ses implications politiques concernent d’abord la vie démocratique, la séparation des pouvoirs, et peuvent déboucher sur des dérives et des excès au profit du pouvoir exécutif. Elles peuvent aussi favoriser des acteurs populistes, ou nationalistes, jouer en faveur de l’autoritarisme. L’impact, s’il se prolonge, devient culturel ; les individus modifient leurs habitudes, leurs comportements, ils apprennent par exemple à ne pas être passifs en situation d’acte terroriste, ils se déplacent en intégrant l’hypothèse du terrorisme, ils consomment autrement, ce qui a notamment des implications économiques considérables. Leur appréhension du réel se transforme. Le terrorisme suscite des politiques répressives, mais aussi préventives, ou de sortie de la violence, par exemple sous la forme d’actions de dé-radicalisation.

Artistic, Digital, and Political Creation in English-Speaking African Countries

Africa 2020

French President Emmanuel Macron announced on 3rd July 2018 in Lagos that a Special Season would be organized in France, from June to December 2020, to mark a renewed partnership with Africa, a “varied, strong and diverse continent that will play a part in our shared future”. Even if this cultural focus cannot be abstracted from a broader geopolitical agenda marred by controversial presidential declarations, it nevertheless has the potential to offer a somewhat different coverage of the continent. One can only hope that it avoids the temptation to officially “curate into being” “exceptional” artists (Dovey), tapping into the all-too-familiar image of Africa as “the supreme receptacle of the West’s obsession with, and circular discourse about, the facts of ‘absence,’ ‘lack,’ and ‘non-being,’ of identity and difference” (Mbembe).

Le retour de la « Rust Belt » à l’heure des populismes

Ce projet de colloque prévoit d'interroger l'objet géographique « Rust Belt » (ceinture de la rouille) sous différents éclairages thématiques, méthodologiques et disciplinaires. La Rust Belt désigne de manière assez imprécise la région désindustrialisée située autour des Grands Lacs du Nord des États-Unis, recouvrant tout ou partie du Wisconsin, du Michigan, de l’Illinois, de l’Indiana, de l’Ohio, de la Virginie occidentale, de la Pennsylvanie, ainsi que certains comtés du nord-ouest de l’État de New York).

Anunciamos el lanzamiento de la convocatoria de artículos sobre «Regímenes iliberales: retos y reconfiguraciones para las democracias» que constituirán el número 82 de América Latina Hoy, Revista de Ciencias Sociales. Este volumen pretende reunir artículos originales (no publicados ni en evaluación en otra revista científica) que aborden de manera multidisciplinar y analítica los modos del ejercicio de poder en democracias iliberales del continente latinoamericano y las lógicas de incremento de sus dinámicas.

Cet outil de recherche requiert compétences, subtilité et sensibilité et va bien au-delà de la simple conversation.

Sharing meals. Social aspects of eating and cooking together

Eating involves many other dimensions than just ingesting food. It is especially a social act, as it involves the social position and relationships of the individual in all of the included practices: supplying, cooking, dressing, ordering, ingesting, clearing, washing-up, managing left-overs, etc. This symposium offers to explore, with a social science approach, the different dimensions associated with sharing meals (non exhaustive): Cultural differences in the manners of sharing meals; Specificity of the sharing of cooking times regarding the sharing of meal times; Use of commensality as a social action mean; Symbolic representation of the benefits of sharing meals (psychological, physiological, social); Comparison of meals regarding other eating times (snacking); Political/Diplomatic use of meals; Organization, perception and role of meals in institutions (school canteens, hospital, nursing homes, prisons…).

The conference “Subaltern political knowledges” intends to take one step back and ask a question which should precede all discussion of politicization, democratization and nationalization of the masses: what did people actually know about politics?

This one-day conference investigates the role of student movements in individual and collective emancipations, from the struggle for colonial liberation to the challenges posed by contemporary globalisation. This conference seeks to bring these various approaches together, in order to discuss the transnational and connected history of student engagements in colonial liberations and the critical reflection on the multilateral management of conflicts in the postcolonial period. It will investigate internal and external tensions, and the reorganisation of these movements in relation to pacifism, revolutionary struggle, conflict prevention and peace making.

TRICUD conference

The TRICUD Final International Conference on "Transnationalism, Identities’ Dynamics and Cultural Diversification in Urban Post-migratory Situations" will take place at the University of Liège on 14, 15 and 16 May 2014. It aims at presenting the main findings of the multidisciplinary research programme TRICUD (2010-2014) involving the following research centres: CEDEM, CLEO and Pôle SuD. TRICUD aims to better understand how migration transforms both sending societies in the South and receiving societies in the North. The conference will include keynote speakers Nina GLICK-SCHILLER (University of Manchester) and Steve VERTOVEC (Max Planck Institute).

A Ação Pública manifesta-se na construção e gestão dos problemas públicos ou sociais. O próprio processo de construção e os modos de gestão dos problemas sociais são analisadores potentes das relações de poder que existem entre os atores e das dinâmicas sociais no interior dos coletivos analisados.

Le programme est organisé dans une perspective interdisciplinaire autour de cours, discussions par sessions thématiques et visites de terrain à Zhytomyr (Ukraine).

Société et politique dans le Sud-Est européen au XIXe siècle

There has always been a negative image attached to South-Eastern European politics and polities and rarely has it been widely acknowledged (Mazower) that the process of state formation in the region was not just a pale and gruesome caricature of Western European models but rather a complicated affair involving juggling with various institutional models (local as well as imported ones), coping with societies of a sometimes inextricable ethnoreligious diversity and varying degrees of political allegiance to central power, dealing with foreign interference and tampering. 19th century visitors of the region contributed a lot to this negative image which still clings to the region (Todorova) and culturalists still like to refer back to the 19th c. as the genealogical matrix of all the region’s evils.
