Violence: An international journal

Terrorism has an impact on the societies that it affects or targets. While this impact can be one-off or limited, nowadays—with the terrorism of radical Islamic groups such as al-Qaeda and, more recently, ISIS—it tends to be heavy and long lasting, even if it does change over time. Its political implications relate first and foremost to democracy and the separation of powers, and can lead to the unraveling and abuse of existing structures, in ways that work to the government’s advantage. If the impact of terrorism is lasting, it becomes cultural: individuals change their habits and behaviors, learning for example not to be passive in the event of a terrorist attack, and going about their daily lives keeping in the back of their minds the possibility that a terrorist attack could take place. Terrorism changes people’s understanding of reality. Terrorism also gives rise to policies that are repressive, but also preventive, or those aimed at exiting violence, using deradicalization programs for example.

The Rust Belt is a rather loose name for the deindustrialized region around the Great Lakes, encompassing all or parts of the states of Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania as well as several northwestern counties of New York state.

Midterm conference of the Research Network “Sociology of Migration” of the European Sociological Association

Current political and media discourses on the questions of “integration”, “belonging” and “borders” are dominated by the perspectives of Western nation states. The objective of this midterm conference of the Research Network 35 “Sociology of Migration” of the European Sociological Association (ESA) is to shift the focus to the perspectives of those who are labeled and talked about in these debates and who become the target of ever-more complex and differentiated border and mobility regimes. This conference will, in other words, interrogate the way belongings and borders are presently challenged and reshaped on different levels (local, national, international) and how biographical perspectives in migration research can shed new light on these processes.

The GOSES summer school is organized jointly by the CNRS (French National Research Council) and SENSE (Netherlands Research School for Socio-Economic and Natural Sciences of the Environment).

Beyond the Periphery: Unpacking African Agency in Global Politics

Au-delà de la Périphérie – l’Afrique dans les Relations Globales : actions, influence(s) et défis

Organisé en partenariat avec l'Université du Cap (Afrique su Sud) et le Département des relations internationales de la London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), ce colloque international vise à explorer comment les acteurs étatiques, sub-étatiques et non-étatiques africains s'adaptent au changement du/dans le système international. Favorisant largement des perspectives africaines, l'objectif est d’interroger, d’analyser et d'évaluer les capacités et les répertoires d’action individuels et collectifs de même que les modes opératoires de ces acteurs à des niveaux et échelles multiples afin d'aller au-delà des idées pré-conçues sur le manque de capacités d'action et de passivité des acteurs africains dans les relations internationales. À travers le concept « d’agence » (agency), ce colloque analysera comment les acteurs africains s'approprient et participent à produire le « global » et à mieux s'insérer dans l’espace mondial. Ce colloque est également motivé par un besoin de partager les recherches en cours sur l’Afrique dans les relations internationales et de favoriser les échanges entre universitaires et institutions africains et non-africains.

The post-tourism future and civil society

The aim of this call for papers is to elicit experiences and/or analyses of the beginning or end of tourism, as well as interpretations of the end of the differentiation between the tourist and ordinary worlds which we are currently observing. Comparisons and attempts at modelling will be welcome. The papers may be proposed by researchers, practitioners or associations and may be jointly authored. They must deal with one of the three topics described below, which are to be the subject of three successive seminars.

Migrants in Global Metropolises

MAGMET research and doctoral seminar

L'objectif de ce séminaire consiste à articuler transformations urbaines, migration et mondialisation pour mieux comprendre la fabrication des villes-mondes plurielles, marquées par de très forts taux d’immigration et de part de population étrangère. Partant des pratiques et des représentations des différents acteurs sociaux, économiques et politiques qui produisent et vivent dans ces villes, il s’intéresse aux modalités d’incarnation socio-spatiales de la diversité, ainsi qu’à sa gestion. En pensant simultanément les connexions et les ancrages, en jouant systématiquement sur l’articulation des échelles, l’enjeu du séminaire est d’élaborer un cadre analytique théorique comparatif afin de réfléchir aux modes de transformation des métropoles plurielles, engagées dans des dynamiques de mondialisation, en fonction de leur insertion dans les réseaux globalisés, de leur taille démographique et de leurs héritages et contextes politiques.

The mass education movements seen in most education systems of the past fifty years have transformed the issues related to school and education spaces. There is a reconstruction of these spaces that questions traditional learning and education missions of the school with broader educational initiatives to meet new problems. This issue focuses on the reorganization of school and educational spaces in relation to local initiatives (local and regional authorities , community associations, popular education movements...) on social and educational issues that mark the contemporary school. In a competitive environment where urban and school areas are increasingly hierarchical, where internal divisions are reinforced, where the external borders are fluid, we question the links between spatial segregation, educational pathways and forms of treatment of new educational issues.

The Network of Researchers on Policy and Programme Evaluation of the French Evaluation Society is pleased to invite you to a free research seminar on: Methods for Synthesizing Knowledge, to beheld on December 10th 2012 at Paris-Dauphine University, Amphitheater 11. The promotion of evidence-based policy by an increasing number of national governments and international organisations has triggered the issues of gathering available evidence on the impact of public interventions, assessing its credibility, and providing policy-makers with knowledge syntheses. Two state-of-art methods have emerged up to date. The first approach builds on the tools of evidence based medicine: systematic review and meta-analysis. The second approach, called realist synthesis, is rooted in social sciences methodologies. This research seminar will present and discuss the available methods (see programme below). This one day conference invites researchers working on initiatives aiming at introducing innovative urban regeneration projects in cities across Europe, particularly cities affected by radical re-modellings over the last twenty years. We are looking for instances of administrative traditions being challenged towards exploratory strategies by lobbying groups of architects/designers, or local communities, or even local governments. This conference wants to explore if and how the expertise of uses from inhabitants and field workers in urban regeneration processes may be integrated to learn about possible ways of challenging the emerging patterns of urban fragmentation.
