Financed by the European Commission, the Academic Network of Soft Law Research (SoLaR) aims at stimulating the debate between academics and practitioners on the national role of EU soft law. SoLaR asks whether and how non-binding EU instruments are used bynational administrations when implementing EU policies and bynational courts when ruling in cases falling within the scope ofapplication of EU law. This final event will present the results of the project (to be published by Bloomsbury as an edited collection in 2020), introduce the policy recommendations and discuss follow-upactivities

Nous assistons aujourd'hui dans une grande partie du monde à l'émergence de nouvelles formes du politique qui, faute de mieux, sont appelées « populismes » ou « néopopulismes ». Que l'on s'intéresse à l'élection de Donald Trump aux États-Unis ou celle de Jair Bolsonaro au Brésil, ou aux régimes de Vladimir Poutine, Victor Orban, la Ligue du Nord et du mouvement Cinq Etoiles, cette évolution politique a très souvent été envisagée comme une déformation pathologique d'une forme politique qui aurait existé sous une forme « originellement pure » : la démocratie libérale. Dans ce contexte où les concepts ne servent plus qu'à nourrir l'invective, il nous a paru important de réunir des chercheuses et chercheurs de différentes disciplines et horizons afin de privilégier des analyses comparatives ou des échanges favorisant les perspectives comparatives.

The course France & the European Union investigates the political economy of European integration from the end of the Second World War to present day with a particular focus on the role played by France in this development. It considers the incentives that have led an ever-larger group of European nations to form multilateral agreements around a growing range of policies that now incorporate such diverse spheres as defense, economics, and human rights. It then turns to the challenges Europe faces in maintaining the European Union (EU) in the face of growing skepticism among national electorates as well as attempts to undermine the EU (by Russia) or withdraw support from it (by the U.K. and the U.S.).

Acts of justice, public events: World War II criminals on trial

The conference suggests approaching trials of war crimes and of crimes against humanity, which took place in the aftermath of World War II and its following decades, as specific social events. By including professional and social actors (magistrates and police force, whistle-blowers, witnesses, defendants...) who got involved and shaped audiences of such trials, the conference endeavours to question the notion of publicization. It will cross this perspective with a study of the part played by the media supports in the organization and in the public reception of these trials.

Au-delà de la Périphérie – l’Afrique dans les Relations Globales : actions, influence(s) et défis

Organisé en partenariat avec l'Université du Cap (Afrique su Sud) et le Département des relations internationales de la London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), ce colloque international vise à explorer comment les acteurs étatiques, sub-étatiques et non-étatiques africains s'adaptent au changement du/dans le système international. Favorisant largement des perspectives africaines, l'objectif est d’interroger, d’analyser et d'évaluer les capacités et les répertoires d’action individuels et collectifs de même que les modes opératoires de ces acteurs à des niveaux et échelles multiples afin d'aller au-delà des idées pré-conçues sur le manque de capacités d'action et de passivité des acteurs africains dans les relations internationales. À travers le concept « d’agence » (agency), ce colloque analysera comment les acteurs africains s'approprient et participent à produire le « global » et à mieux s'insérer dans l’espace mondial. Ce colloque est également motivé par un besoin de partager les recherches en cours sur l’Afrique dans les relations internationales et de favoriser les échanges entre universitaires et institutions africains et non-africains.

This special issue of Etudes Canadiennes/Canadian Studies intends to explore what’s new in Canada, nine years after the coming to power of the Conservatives, four years after Stephen Harper won the election that gave him a majority government, and at a time when Canada is getting ready for the next federal election. While the contributions are expected to focus on the Conservative initiatives to shape this new Canada, they will also be encouraged to compare them with other societal and global factors that may contribute to a changing Canada.

The Network of Researchers on Policy and Programme Evaluation of the French Evaluation Society is pleased to invite you to a free research seminar on: Methods for Synthesizing Knowledge, to beheld on December 10th 2012 at Paris-Dauphine University, Amphitheater 11. The promotion of evidence-based policy by an increasing number of national governments and international organisations has triggered the issues of gathering available evidence on the impact of public interventions, assessing its credibility, and providing policy-makers with knowledge syntheses. Two state-of-art methods have emerged up to date. The first approach builds on the tools of evidence based medicine: systematic review and meta-analysis. The second approach, called realist synthesis, is rooted in social sciences methodologies. This research seminar will present and discuss the available methods (see programme below). Le colloque s'adresse particulièrement à de jeunes chercheurs francais et allemands qui travaillent dans le cadre de leur qualification sur des aspects du transnational.

Although the topic may seem vast and complex, the multidisci-plinary approach allows for a better understanding of the topic and an informative exchange among scholars and interested people from all faiths.
