Arabian Humanities Thematic Issue No. 15 (Spring 2021)

This issue of Arabian Humanities proposes to offer a multidisciplinary overview of the Sultanate of Oman contemporary period by bringing together old and recent works. It will focus as much on its history as on the major social and cultural changes that have taken place in its society. The aim is to explore the different aspects that can be observed today and which contribute to a better understanding of this country over time.

The ultimate purpose of the International Congress on Desert Economy – Dakhla, is to be a scientific and multidisciplinary platform on desert and Sahara economy development, in order to contribute effectively to the good governance and in the sustainable development of desert regions, by stimulating meetings between all stakeholders on a global scale, with a view to fostering cooperation and partnership, among (Sahara) desert countries (Africa, the Gulf States, the United States of America, China, Australia...), with the aim of creating a conducive environment to the exchange of experiences, expertise and innovation, around themes related to desert and Sahara economy development, such as: Tourism and travel industry, agriculture, renewable energy, raw materials, transportation and logistics, sea and ocean economy, technology and innovation, entertainment and sport economy, cultural and intangible heritage, nature and environment.

The Rust Belt is a rather loose name for the deindustrialized region around the Great Lakes, encompassing all or parts of the states of Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania as well as several northwestern counties of New York state.

Beyond the Periphery: Unpacking African Agency in Global Politics

Au-delà de la Périphérie – l’Afrique dans les Relations Globales : actions, influence(s) et défis

Organisé en partenariat avec l'Université du Cap (Afrique su Sud) et le Département des relations internationales de la London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), ce colloque international vise à explorer comment les acteurs étatiques, sub-étatiques et non-étatiques africains s'adaptent au changement du/dans le système international. Favorisant largement des perspectives africaines, l'objectif est d’interroger, d’analyser et d'évaluer les capacités et les répertoires d’action individuels et collectifs de même que les modes opératoires de ces acteurs à des niveaux et échelles multiples afin d'aller au-delà des idées pré-conçues sur le manque de capacités d'action et de passivité des acteurs africains dans les relations internationales. À travers le concept « d’agence » (agency), ce colloque analysera comment les acteurs africains s'approprient et participent à produire le « global » et à mieux s'insérer dans l’espace mondial. Ce colloque est également motivé par un besoin de partager les recherches en cours sur l’Afrique dans les relations internationales et de favoriser les échanges entre universitaires et institutions africains et non-africains.

Migrants in Global Metropolises

MAGMET research and doctoral seminar

L'objectif de ce séminaire consiste à articuler transformations urbaines, migration et mondialisation pour mieux comprendre la fabrication des villes-mondes plurielles, marquées par de très forts taux d’immigration et de part de population étrangère. Partant des pratiques et des représentations des différents acteurs sociaux, économiques et politiques qui produisent et vivent dans ces villes, il s’intéresse aux modalités d’incarnation socio-spatiales de la diversité, ainsi qu’à sa gestion. En pensant simultanément les connexions et les ancrages, en jouant systématiquement sur l’articulation des échelles, l’enjeu du séminaire est d’élaborer un cadre analytique théorique comparatif afin de réfléchir aux modes de transformation des métropoles plurielles, engagées dans des dynamiques de mondialisation, en fonction de leur insertion dans les réseaux globalisés, de leur taille démographique et de leurs héritages et contextes politiques.

The Network of Researchers on Policy and Programme Evaluation of the French Evaluation Society is pleased to invite you to a free research seminar on: Methods for Synthesizing Knowledge, to beheld on December 10th 2012 at Paris-Dauphine University, Amphitheater 11. The promotion of evidence-based policy by an increasing number of national governments and international organisations has triggered the issues of gathering available evidence on the impact of public interventions, assessing its credibility, and providing policy-makers with knowledge syntheses. Two state-of-art methods have emerged up to date. The first approach builds on the tools of evidence based medicine: systematic review and meta-analysis. The second approach, called realist synthesis, is rooted in social sciences methodologies. This research seminar will present and discuss the available methods (see programme below). Tackling Urban Fragmentation. Alternative Approaches to Urban Regeneration

This one day conference invites researchers working on initiatives aiming at introducing innovative urban regeneration projects in cities across Europe, particularly cities affected by radical re-modellings over the last twenty years. We are looking for instances of administrative traditions being challenged towards exploratory strategies by lobbying groups of architects/designers, or local communities, or even local governments. This conference wants to explore if and how the expertise of uses from inhabitants and field workers in urban regeneration processes may be integrated to learn about possible ways of challenging the emerging patterns of urban fragmentation.
