Alexander von Humboldt and the Earth System Sciences
L'idée de ce colloque d'une journée sur Alexandre von Humboldt est de réunir des spécialistes de diverses disciplines qui couvrent aujourd'hui les nombreux domaines auxquels le travail et les idées de von Humboldt ont contribué, en particulier dans son œuvre maîtresse Kosmos (1845-1862). Nous voulons montrer comment le travail scientifique de ce plus grand encyclopédiste de la première moitié de l'Europe du XIXe siècle est plus que jamais au cœur des questions liées à notre planète d'origine, la Terre, et aux questions posées par notre entrée dans l’Anthropocène.

One of the impressive new areas of scientific interest is the science of the brain. New tools and new theoretical approaches have resulted in new insights into how humans get around in the world and understand themselves. But this new science has its roots in broadly philosophical investigations of the mind going back to the classic thinkers from the beginning of modernity. In this conference, we will juxtapose contemporary scientists working on the brain with historians of philosophy and science working on classic figures like Descartes, Hobbes, Locke and Cudworth, among others, to see how the new can illuminate the old, and the old the new.

Journal of Phenomenological and Existential Theory and Culture
Eros plays a central role in Western thought. In the philosophical and spiritual traditions, it usually refers to physical love and desire. Eros is a recurring character in the pre-Socratic cosmogonies, and it is the main impulse of the philosophical quest for truth in Plato’s Phaedrus. This Special Topics issue of PhænEx wishes to give a new impulse to philosophical reflections on this fundamental and ambiguous phenomenon, following an interdisciplinary perspective at the intersection of phenomenology, post-structuralism, and social sciences (psychology, sociology, sexology, anthropology, linguistics, etc.).

C'est l'annonce et l'appel à communication pour le colloque international sur Michel Bakounine et l'Association Internationale des Travailleurs, organisé du 10 au 13 novembre 2014 à l'Université de São Paulo (FFLCH-USP) et qui implique à la fois historiens, géographes, philosophes et sociologues. Il s'agit à la fois de reconstruire la trajectoire du célèbre révolutionnaire russe pendant la période où il a participé aux activités de la Première Internationale (1864-1876) et de problématiser la contribution de Bakounine et de ses réseaux à la fondation du mouvement libertaire international et à l'histoire intellectuelle du socialisme. La date limite pour présenter des propositions de communication est fixée pour le 4 août 2014.

Fourth Annual Princeton-Weimar Summer School for Media Studies
The Princeton-Weimar Summer School for Media Studies – a collaboration between the Bauhaus- Universität Weimar (Internationales Kolleg für Kulturtechnikforschung und Medienphilosophie, IKKM) and Princeton University (German Department) – returns to Princeton in 2014 for its fourth installment. The 2014 topic will be “Practices, Procedures, Recursions: The Reality of Media?”. The weeklong program will be hosted by Princeton’s German Department. It will be directed by Bernhard Siegert (Weimar) and Nikolaus Wegmann (Princeton). Besides the directors the faculty will include renowned film maker Harun Farocki as well as scholars of media and literature such as Petra McGillen (Dartmouth), Grant Wythoff (Columbia), and Harun Maye (Weimar).

This congress is an interdisciplinary event gathering logicians, philosophers, mathematicians, semioticians, artists, cognitivists, and computer scientists.

Third International Conference of the European Society for Early Modern Philosophy
The general objective of the conference is to take an overview of the present historiographical situation regarding the study of controversies and to contribute to a reappraisal of the study of controversies in the history of early modern philosophy. It will aim not only at mapping the many philosophical controversies of the early modern period, but as well at making explicit the different methodological approaches that can be used to analyse controversies and at evaluating the different explanatory merits of those methodological approaches.
