Jazz, globalisation and communities
Jazz, globalisation and communities
Now a quasi-universal musical form, present in all five continents, jazz developed as a result of a complex process of cultural exchange, making it a true product of cultural globalisation. Typical of the success of the « glocal », as defined by Robertson in 1994, between the « resilience of the local and global consciousness », jazz has generated new communities of amateur and professional musicians around a strong local musical tradition, thanks first to the presence of foreign musicians, and second to the global nature of jazz itself. The aim of this one-day conference will be to explore the local and global dimensions of these jazz communities from the point of the musicians, the audiences and media, in order to understand how jazz, the quintessentially global musical genre, creates not just local and global communities, but also the links between these very communities.

Waste Sciences, Knowledges and Practices
European, North and Latin American perspectives
Waste has emerged as a main environmental, economic and social issue in the last fifty years. The convergence of interests from various fields of reflection and action suggests a potential and fruitful “epistemological turn”. Yet this process is still on the verge of formalization. Research and decision on waste organizational and representational systems remain either fragmented or dependent on local context though some waste management recommendations arise from worries on the global consequences of discard. Hence this international symposium aims at opening transatlantic conversations between academic, technical and artistic areas in order to clarify how waste challenges our everyday sciences, knowledges and practices.

Sustainable development and "social acceptability"
Actors and production régimes of social acceptability

Call for papers - Urban studies
Representing South African cities
This conference proposes to present the latest developments in the research on South African cities, but also to offer an opportunity for academics from various fields (literature, social sciences, architecture, geography, visual arts, etc.) to compare their respective analysis and their theoretical conclusions with the imaginative, artistic representations of the cities of South Africa. The convenors therefore not only invite researchers from all fields to come and present their latest work on South African cities, but also strongly encourage papers which offer a cross-disciplinary approach, or joint presentations between researchers from various fields or academics and artists (writers, directors, photographs). Some major actors of the literary and art scene will be present to expose their views and discuss their works with researchers as well as with a wider, more general audience. This conference is part of the Official Season of South Africa in France.
