  Spanish syndicalism within the framework of international relations

  The case of the General Workers Unions (1888-1986)

  The emergence of a labour movement, of socialist obedience, more specifically, in Spain, goes hand in hand with internationalism. From its creation, in 1888, the General Union of Workers (UGT) has tried to incorporate the international labour movement. Thus, through time, UGT joined the main organizations such as the International Federation of Trade Unions, the World Federation of Trade Unions, the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions and the European Trade Union Confederation. The UGT also takes part in the work by the International Labour Organization and fosters relations with other foreign organisations. Finally, the UTG is involved with international solidarity groups and organisations dealing with social security like the Democratic Solidary organisation in Spain. To this day, few studies have been conducted on the importance of those links on the growth of the UGT, notably at some crucial moments of its existence such as the Francoist dictatorship and the transition towards democracy. These relations played a decisive part in the survival of  socialist trade unions.

  The worlds and markets of work in southern Europe (15th-20th century)

  Un des enjeux de cette journée d’études est de se placer sur la longue durée (XV^e-XX^e siècle), pour saisir la constitution du travail comme activité spécifique, tendant à se distinguer de la vie familiale par des lieux distinctifs. La diversité des structures familiales, des modes d’organisation politique et des activités productives en Espagne, en France et en Italie, est à interroger dans ses relations avec une dynamique de modernisation économique. Cette diversité peut se traduire par l’existence de milieux plus ou moins favorables à la diffusion d’une culture technique, en affinité avec un développement économique potentiel par exemple dans le cadre de districts industriels ou proto-industriels. Il s’agit également d’analyser le fonctionnement des marchés du travail urbain comme élément de la dynamique du travail et comme facteur de la mobilité de la population rurale-urbaine. Cette mobilité spatiale inscrivant les individus dans le marché du travail, ouvre à la possibilité de mobilités sociales, aspect qui pourrait être observé d'un point de vue démographique et sociologique.

  Revolution and cinema: the Portuguese example

  In honour of the fortieth anniversary of the Carnation Revolution, this three-day international conference seeks to interrogate the cinematic representation of the political event from 1974 to today. Paul Ricœur states that “rethinking is a form that cancels temporal distance.” To rethink the revolution would then entail making the revolution present, making it come alive, bringing the past and the present together, questioning the effects of the passing of time on the images, the narratives and on cinema itself as an historical device. Today’s acute economic and political crisis in Portugal shakes the very foundations of April’s democracy, and this legacy could perhaps use the present as the inaugural strength of another history to come. Taking the cinema of revolution as a nodal point and as a major historical shift, which links – other than referential and chronological ones –, unify the pre- and post-revolutionary Portuguese cinemas? In other words, how can this idea of “revolution” remain, irrigate and illuminate Portuguese cinema?
