  Searching for places, places of knowledge

  Identifying and indexing research grounds in scientific texts

  This day focuses on the challenges, methods and research questions associated with the recognition of geographical entities in the texts of scientific publications. The first session looks back at land-related research. Overgrazed lands, remote science, visibility of research sites and the local dimension of some sites will be discussed. The second session will present the methodologies for automatically detecting research fields in scientific texts. The third session will show the interest of these methods and the challenge of applying them to large corpora of scientific texts, taking the example of the ISTEX and OpenEdition corpora. The fourth session will present projects proposing interactive keyword and toponym exploration solutions for archaeology and geography journals.

  Albert Demangeon (1872-1940) - the methods, archives and struggles of a geographer

  Méthodes, archives et combats d’un géographe de plein vent

  Albert Demangeon (1872-1940) a occupé une place décisive dans le développement de la géographie humaine française au cours du premier XX^e siècle. Au-delà d’une thèse sur la Picardie considérée dès sa publication (1905) comme un modèle de géographie régionale, et de manuels pédagogiques qui expliquent l’écho que suscite parfois son nom auprès du grand public, son œuvre scientifique fut considérable, ses terrains d’investigation diversifiés, ses thèmes de recherche largement ouverts sur l’actualité. Il a puissamment contribué à construire cette géographie humaine « moderne » ou « nouvelle » esquissée autour de son maître Paul Vidal de La Blache (1845-1918), et à la promouvoir à travers les débats intenses qui animaient alors les sciences humaines.

  14-18: War in maps

  Si la première guerre mondiale a dévasté des millions de vies humaines, elle a aussi profondément bouleversé les territoires européens et leurs frontières, la perception et la représentation de ces espaces. Organisée à l’occasion de l’exposition « Été 14 : les derniers jours de l’ancien monde », cette journée d’étude tentera d’approfondir les dimensions sociales, culturelles et politiques, mais aussi les évolutions techniques de la représentation du territoire pendant le conflit. Comment la cartographie a-t-elle été mobilisée dans la préparation de la guerre, puis au cœur des opérations militaires ? Comment les cartes ont-elles participé à la propagande des États et des Empires, quelles formes de représentations destinées à la société civile ont-elles été mises en œuvre, par le biais de la presse notamment ? Comment, enfin, les cartes ont-elles contribué à faire émerger une nouvelle géopolitique ?

  Ideas in movement: the role of conflict and commerce in the history of navigation

  Following successful meetings in 2010 and 2012, Royal Museums Greenwich and the Royal Institute of Navigation are planning a third symposium to bring together current research in the history of navigation. 2014 sees the centenary of the beginning of the First World War. While this conflict provided a powerful stimulus for research and development in navigation, technological developments have also sprung from users and from commercial imperatives.
