Establishment of an Endogenous Calendar and Celebration of the African New Year: Contemporary Challenges of African Unity, between history and identity

In a context where Africa aspires to free itself from the vestiges of colonization and all other forms of cultural domination, in order to assert itself as an autonomous and self-referential power, the question arises as to what date could be chosen for the celebration of the African New Year, similar to that of other peoples of the world such as the Chinese, Europeans, Israelis, Iranians, and so on, who celebrate their New Year distinctly. However, this date must necessarily be based on a scientifically developed calendar that withstands the vagaries of time. It is for all these reasons that the Togolese Government proposes to organize an international symposium on the theme: “Establishment of an endogenous calendar and celebration of the African New Year: contemporary challenges of African unity, between history and identity”.

Living and Dwelling in the Mediterranean Space: Practices, Representations, and Environment

Unleashing Transformative and Decolonised Education for Sustainability in a Globalised World

The theme of the conference is grounded in the transformative learning paradigm applied to education for sustainable development (ESD). ESD is a central element in promoting “enlightened citizenship” for all students, but also in training future professionals who will integrate a sustainable development approach into their work, regardless of the sector. This call for contributions is based on UNESCO’s 2030 Roadmap for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), published in 2020 and the 2022 Berlin Declaration, which places transformative ESD at its core.

Playing with uncertainty, gambling with crises

The rise of Gambling, mechanisms and consequences

This session aims to analyse the rise of gambling in Africa as a major social, economic, and territorial phenomenon. It will examine the reconfiguration of gambling spaces linked to digitalisation, as well as the role of betting in a context shaped by precarity and uncertainty as experienced by urban youth. Through several papers and a roundtable discussion devoted to the Senegalese case, the session will highlight the global circulations and North–South asymmetries that structure this rapidly expanding industry.

Policing the Mobility of 'Undesirables' (1870-1923)

    Powder, People, Papers

This study day aims to facilitate conversations across borders. Specifically, we hope to bring together various fields – Border Studies, Refugee Studies, Mobility and Surveillance Studies – in order to investigate border control processes and experiences during the period (1870–1923) and to facilitate meaningful conversations with those studying the present. Taking onboard the statement by French anthropologist Michel Agier in La Condition cosmopolite that ‘seen from the border, the world also looks different’, organisers would like to advance an encompassing view of border experiences.

African Journal of Social Responsibility and Sustainable Management - volume 3, issue 2, 2026

Urban Metamorphoses: Socio-Spatial Dynamics in Arab Cities

    Revue « EchoGéo »

Since the beginning of the 20th century, the Arab world has undergone rapid urbanization. Today, global cities in the region such as Doha and Dubai have themselves become exporters of new urban paradigms to the wider Arab world and beyond. This issue of EchoGéo aims to explore these urban metamorphoses through a multidisciplinary and comparative approach, connecting dynamics across North Africa and the Middle East, and to bridge three elements: understanding the forces that deeply transform Arab cities, examining how they unfold in concrete places, and giving full attention to the resistances, detours, and inventions that redraw urban life.

Feeding urban territories in North Africa

Crossed perspectives from Algeria and Egypt

This collective volume explores urban food supply systems in North Africa, with a particular focus on Algeria and Egypt, where rapid processes of metropolization and megalopolization intensify pressures on food resources. Through a territorially grounded approach, the book aims to examine the challenges of food security in cities facing urban sprawl, loss of agricultural land, rising food demand, and increasing dependence on imports. The objective is to provide a cross-cutting analysis of territorial dynamics, supply chains, urban–rural reconfigurations, and the limitations of public policies in addressing urban food systems. Contributions are expected to adopt empirical, comparative, or modelling approaches, addressing themes such as urban planning, multi-level governance, food justice, short supply chains, and the regulation of informal economies, all within a broader perspective of strengthening the resilience of urban food systems.

Social networks and the dynamics of constructing/deconstructing social identities

Identity issues are a pervasive concern in Sub-Saharan Africa, where the complexity and diversity of networks, including social networks, play a significant role in shaping and reshaping various forms of identity. The humanities and social sciences offer a critical framework for scholars to investigate the “weak ties” and “strong ties” generated by these networks, as well as the intersections and entanglements between social networks and the dynamics of identity construction and deconstruction in Cameroon.

    Return(s) to Africa

Joint call for the journal Sources. Materials & Fieldwork in African Studies and the Revue d’histoire contemporaine de l’Afrique (RHCA)

This joint call for proposals for the journals Sources and RHCA welcomes original articles on the theme of return, or returns, to Africa. While differences exist according to time and place, what “returns” to Africa have in common is that they are not simply a physical return; they are also part of a political process and reflect a desire to reappropriate an ancestral African heritage, regardless of the ideological and institutional framework. Confronted with realities of African societies, “return” raises other questions, such as the status of foreigners and economic issues, and helps redefine political and cultural projects that are simultaneously local and transnational.
