Maintaining public goods in an era of austerity
Journal Espaces et Sociétés No. 200
Local government service budgets have continued to be cut, exacerbating the social and environmental vulnerabilities that municipalities now have to manage with limited resources. The purpose of this dossier is to focus on the spatial dimension of the continuance and evolution of public goods in a context of austerity. In particular, we encourage ethnographic and situated perspectives that consider top-down political experiments and bottom-up urban practices and their convergence in the protection, maintenance and regeneration of public goods. The goal is to give space to studies that investigate the relationship between austerity, public goods and care practices.

Precarious housing in the Global South
Public interventions and residents' expériences
This call for abstracts aims to highlight the growth and complexity of precarious housing in a context of increasing urban inequality. Far from being reduced to marginality or poverty, these spaces represent a third of the world's population and play an active role in urban dynamics, combining vulnerability, inventiveness and collective capacities. In the face of often repressive or insufficiently coordinated policies, it calls for recognition of their diversity, their essential function in the urban fabric, and the importance of interdisciplinary reflection based on field surveys, via the following thematic areas: theme 1 - Ambivalent effects of urban public action, theme 2 - Residents' practices, mobilisation and daily resistance, theme 3 - Institutional, symbolic and criminal violence: forms, effects and social responses.

Maintaining public goods in an era of austerity
Espaces et Société n°200, march 2027
This special issue aims to highlight the spatial dimension of public goods maintenance and evolution in the context of austerity by adopting the spatial care perspective through three axes: 1) actors and practices involved in maintaining public goods; 2) maintaining public goods on a day-to-day basis; 3) the work and values of public goods. We encourage ethnographic and situated perspectives that consider top-down political experimentation, bottom-up urban practices and their convergence in the protection, maintenance and regeneration of public goods. This call is open to interdisciplinary, national and international contributions.

At the heart of the transnational allophone press
Production, financing, distribution, circulation and reception (XIX°-XX° centuries)
Long ignored by specialists, the foreign-language press exists in most countries at the margins of the global media system. In some countries, especially in those that attract large flows of immigrants, exiles and expatriates, these periodicals are numerous and of a great variety. For the 10th Transfopress Encounter, we invite papers on the organization and functioning of the allophone press, its funding, its distribution, circulation and reception by its readres.

Chinese public space, a shared space?
Espaces et Sociétés’ perspective on the Chinese city and urbanization, through a notion that is both distinctive and paradoxical in China: public space. The title of this call for papers, “Chinese public space, a shared space?” questions on the one hand the specific definition of Chinese public space, which is undergoing very rapid changes, and on the other hand its ability to be “shared” locally and internationally.

Learning from Territories / Teaching Territories
The 6th CIST (International College of Territorial Sciences) will focus on two questions: how to teach about territories and how to learn from territories. The objective of the following sessions is to highlight, on the one hand, the specific features of the teaching methods used in territorial sciences in the various disciplines involved, specifically by examining how they vary from one discipline to another and between countries; and on the other, to demonstrate how research in the territorial sciences develops specific methodologies for investigating places and individuals depending on whether the times being studied are periods of calm or of crisis; and on whether the territories in question are unremarkable in their ordinariness or exceptional in some way.

Urban Images in African Contexts
In this special section, we seek to reimagine imagetic and urban practices and representations of the African continent, articulating two main fields, the visual and the urban. Here we want to reunite research that discouses discourses, imaginaries, representations, figurations, and politics about different African cities. Here we understand "images" in a broad sense, encompassing not only production and reproduction technologies, like photography and film but also virtual and digital, visual arts, and museum expositions. The purpose is not only to extend the debate over the field of the visual in different cities from an anthropological perspective. In this special section, we want to punctuate the implications of the imagens in a diversity of urban processes in the continent, emphasizing the plasticity of its forms and contents, its changes, its ambivalence, and opacity; beyond the debates about gender, agency, power, and resistance.

Revue « Espaces et Sociétés »
This issue of the journal Espaces et Sociétés is focued on the contributions of city-dwellers to the care of greenery in the city, with particular emphasis on two key perspectives. In the first, we look solely at practices that emerge in the public space, whether spontaneous and developed outside organised structures, or encouraged by institutional entities established by the public authorities. In the second perspective, the aim is to look critically at the urban nature activities undertaken by individuals, i.e. outside the collective practices traditionally pursued in shared gardens or big urban projects by public authorities, cooperatives or civil society organisations. International comparisons or case studies from outside France are welcome.

Migration Triage and Experiences of Blocking : Africa, America, Europe
On a global scale, many migrant populations are stopped in their journey at international border or on the roads and places that are gradually built up as internal state borders. The political processes of contention are currently a common denominator of the production of blocked situations, as part of a transformation of the dynamics of control and surveillance. The « border effects » have in common that they confront migrants, like asylum seekers, with forms of blockage, lengthening waiting periods, producing new social dynamics, temporalities and spatiality where various actors intervene. The objective of the conference is to analyze the diversity of migratory situations produced by blockage at different levels according to their production context. The aim of the event is to participate in the construction of a comparative framework to address these situations by putting into perspective the construction of migration policies and their effects in Africa, Latin America and Europe.

Local production and appropriations of globalised urban planning
The acceleration of globalisation and the massive urbanisation of the planet over the past forty years have played a powerful role in the transformation of cities. These worldwide dynamics are often presented as sources of a homogenisation of the cities’ organisational principles and the policies guiding their development, as well as urban forms and architectural styles. The result would thus be a ‘globalised urban planning’, in the sense of a uniform vision of the ways of creating the city promoted by the intensified circulation of ideas and models, the mobility of urban planning actors and the concentration of capital on a global scale. ‘Globalised fragments’ (Verdeil, 2006, p. 160) would be the symbol of this process, characterised by an influx of private stakeholders and specific planning schemes where the production of urban images play a key role.

Adventure playgrounds of the past/for the future
Current state of knowledge, issues and perspectives
Adventure playgrounds are unique spaces of play. While the 1990s saw their disappearance in France, a recent resurgence has brought up questions around their legacy and theoretical basis as socio-pedagogical experiments. This symposium, organised by TAPLA (Terrains d’aventure du passé/pour l’avenir – Adventure playgrounds of the past/for the future) and supported by Labex: pasts in the present, is designed to investigate how adventure playgrounds raise questions around the place accorded to children in the city, and more specifically, children’s unmediated experience of socio-spacial learning systems. In addition, we aim to lay the groundwork for an international, interdisciplinary network, combining the human and social sciences with spacial design and urban planning, along with the fields of education and socio-cultural community work.
