Quebec City
Tourism and international labels. Protection and commercialization
UNESCO's labels (World Heritage, Biosphere Reserves, Creative Cities, Global Geoparks) have been created, amongst other reasons, to ensure the sustainable development of areas with special characteristics. Each label has specific objectives, be it conservation or protection, education, or networking of these areas. While these labels have not been designed to contribute to the commercialization of tourism, many destinations enjoy the prestige, reputation, and guarantee of quality or exceptionality associated with these labels to attract visitors, residents, and investors. Some site managers also use these labels to educate residents and visitors about their specific characteristics. The use of these international labels in a marketing context therefore poses a large number of challenges, both from practical and theoretical points of view.

The Caribbean city, the unknown. Heterogeneous human settlements, legacies of the colonial era, refuge of the disadvantaged and homeless, mixed and fragmented, and the showcases of Caribbean tourism, the urban Caribbean presents itself as the economic ambition of these insular territories and other shores bathed by the Caribbean sea. The Caribbean city, a chaotic juxtaposition of modernity and the colonial past, and existing both as a social and political symbol, opens up a rich and immense new area. Sometimes characterized by European allure, the remainder of Africa - some may say -, American city - without a doubt -, hybrid format, the Caribbean city presents a particular subject of study.

Ce colloque international propose de travailler la notion de droit à la ville depuis les villes du Sud. Il s’attache à en restituer la portée critique et souhaite soumettre à la réflexion collective la notion de droit à la ville de fait, forgée dans le cadre d’un programme de recherche collaboratif, DALVAA. Il invite donc des participants de disciplines et d’institutions variées, à engager un dialogue sur le rôle des expériences citadines dans la mise en ordre socio-spatiale des villes du Sud. -

Common goods and territories
We observe today an outbreak of initiatives based on the concept of “common goods” in the context of planning, urbanism and territorial development. The current call for papers aims at gathering contributions from various disciplines and to shed light on this (re)emerging concept. A second aim is to address how the use of this concept renews (or not) the “territorial fabric” in Europe and in the world.

Migrants and access to the city
Revue « Espaces et Sociétés »
Recently, the scale of migration has generated strong images and speech that on one hand incite an urge to situate these events in academic debates, and also to participate in their objectification. This issue of E & S concerns access to the city by migrants, considering such access as an intermediate step between the flow of migration and registration (one time, temporary or permanent) of people in specific spaces. We expect proposals from those hoping to analyze the materiality of access points, technologies that accompany these processes, objects that materialize migratory situations, and finally, the temporal dimension of space. Empirical research from so-called “developing” countries will be valued highly and will be conducive to the renewal of analytical and operational framework categories, often forged in the North.

Financing the city. City transfers under financial stress

Funding for the city has been the subject of much attention over the last 15 years. The rise of institutional investors around the pan-securitization of real estate, and the development of private public partnerships in a context of shrinking public resources are phenomena that have overturned ways of doing things. This issue does not aim to analyze new models of financing urbanization as such, but to study the consequences. Several lines of work can be evoked which are all supported by the analysis of social and spatial effects of the ways of funding the city today: the effects of globalized city funding, concentration of players, modes of financing and the standardization of products, the development of new forms of public-private partnership and logical investment locations, the transitional funding arrangements for more sustainable cities or competitive cities through major partnership operations, are questions that can be addressed.

Espaces et sociétés
In a general context of growing social inequalities, this issue reviews the role that housing plays in the system of inequalities, on the one hand, and in the multiple variations of housing inequalities, on the other. Faced with growing tensions in the housing market, we seek contributions that capture the changes at work in a field well-trodden by urban studies. Produced by class domination, racism and gender, how are today's inequalities intersect in analyses of access and housing conditions? How are inequalities produced in housing, who are the actors, what is the role of public policy? Beside typical situations, we encourage contributors to provide analyses of minority forms of housing as "social fact park" or de facto social housing in the private sector and existing housing stock and via third parties. Finally, this Call for Papers asks what are the consequences of housing inequality on the (re)production of inequality, and the changing classificatory function of housing.

Zone: the space of a life on the margins
Espaces et sociétés
While the everyday of "suburban youth" occupies the attention of French sociologists, the other face of the youths that have been relegated to "dropouts" (“zonards”) remains virtually invisible in terms of the social sciences. This issue aims to provide a first synthesis of French work on “the zone” as an area of life on the margins, and a presentation of pioneering English-language research in this field of study. This will be explore the range or meanings of experiments whose originality derives from a shared nomadic lifestyle, keeping a distance from institutions, as well as normative territories. The expected proposals will favor the investigation of spaces and the constituent cultures of dropouts (squatters, punks, ravers ...).

The cities of urban research have long been and still are widely today, the "great cities". But the realities of urban are not limited to them. In France for example the small and medium-sized cities house more than a quarter of the population. What does the observation of these cities bring to knowledge of the urban phenomenon? On the other hand, in the research devoted to major metropoles, it is often very specific neighborhoods that are the subject of attention of research as well as the media: social housing developments or the central gentrified neighborhoods. But more "ordinary" neighbourhoods are not often the focus. What does the observation of these neighbourhoods that we do not talk about "say" about the city? In other words, we would like to call on work that offers openings of the typologies of cities as the typologies of neighbourhoods that are subjacent to the discourse and debates on the urban.

Villes et conflits : hier, aujourd’hui, demain
Journée des jeunes américanistes 2015
Les conflits interrogent et mettent en débat les manières de faire et de vivre en ville. Ils offrent une entrée pour l’analyse des logiques d’action des acteurs et permettent d’explorer les rapports de pouvoir, les représentations sociales, les dimensions politiques de l’urbain. Les revendications des groupes sociaux et les dispositifs de gouvernances – telles la participation et la démocratie - sont particulièrement bien mis en relief par l’analyse des conflits. Les approches diachroniques révèlent les objets et les enjeux majeurs des luttes et mettent en évidence les processus et les ruptures qui caractérisent les dynamiques urbaines. Interroger les conflits contemporains (mobilisations globales, mouvement des places, usage des réseaux sociaux…) depuis les Amériques apporterait aussi des éclairages sur les dynamiques contemporaines de la région.

Transnational, Transhistorical Perspectives
This international conference on carnival will bring together historians, anthropologists, and sociologists to explore the links between carnival and politics as showcased by carnivals in Europe, North America, the Caribbean and Latin America. The purpose of the meeting will be twofold: (1) discuss the evolution of "carnival studies" since the publication of Bakhtin’s Rabelais and His World fifty years ago; (2) use case studies covering a wide range of geographical areas and historical periods (from the Renaissance to the 21st century) to produce a coherent synthesis of the relationship between carnival and politics.

XIIth World Congress on Earthen Architectures (Terra 2016)
Terra 2016 is the twelfth in a series of international events organised since 1972, bringing together academics, professionals and experts, and a broad audience gathering around earthen architectures. The congress is organised under the aegis of the ISCEAH Committee of ICOMOS international, in the framework of the UNESCO World Heritage Earthen Architecture Programme (WHEAP). The 2016 edition will focus mainly on issues dealing with sustainable development, particularly in urban areas. This event will gather more than 800 participants from the fields of heritage conservation, archeology, architecture and urban planning, engineering, social sciences, as well as fields related to local sustainable development and crisis intervention.

A fundamental tool in the approach to space and in the relationships that societies maintain with it, direct observation or in situ is only simple in appearance Espaces et Sociétés thus invites authors to think about the way they have mobilized observation in their research. More specifically, we wish to explore the hypothesis that the plurality of the theoretical and technical declensions of observation are particularly striking when this concerns spaces, their configurations and their uses. What status does observation grant to space? What are the original manners to grasp places and the social activities which produce them? What are the criteria of validity of this method? Which criticisms can we address to observation as a method ?

Describing, inhabiting and governing Urban Fringe Landscapes

The goal of this conference is to question European urban fringes, which we define as precise or graduated transitional spaces where the city leaves space for something else : countryside, forests, “nature,” wasteland or fallow awaiting projects... These urban fringes can be understood at different scales, from the overall agglomeration down to the quarter or even at the installation project scale. This conference is designed as a moment of exchange making it possible to compare research and management experiences around this original object concentrating numerous issues. Different axes of analysis are proposed : Landscapes and urban fringe physiognomies ; agricultures and cities ; nature and biodiversity ; Urban margins : marginalising and social mixing ; Urban limits under constraint: risks and protected spaces.

Belonging and appropriation in the city
Márgenes journal issue 14
La revue accepte des articles originaux écrits en français et en espagnol. Observer et comprendre l'appropriation implique que l'on considère plusieurs dimensions : économique, politique, culturelle et urbaine. Le dialogue entre l'architecture, les sciences de l’espace et les sciences humaines, tel qu’il est engagé par la revue Márgenes, propose d’envisager ces perspectives intersubjectives, mais aussi de s’interroger sur l’agir, dès lors que les acteurs de la fabrique de la ville se confrontent autour de l'appropriation de l’espace.

This themed issue intends to discuss the challenges and methodologies at stake in comparative research. The aim is not to present data extracted from an international comparison, but to focus on the epistemological and methodological challenges in the process of their production.

En France ou à l'étranger, l’appel à articles souhaite cerner les logiques et les conséquences socio-spatiales de l'inflation carcérale et de la multiplication des espaces d'enfermement contraint et prolongé (centres éducatifs fermés, centres de rétention administrative, etc.). Quelles sont les spécificités des territoires qui accueillent ces espaces d'enfermement et quelles sont celles des territoires d'où viennent les détenus ? Quels sont les liens entre l'intérieur et l'extérieur, entre le lieu d'enfermement et son environnement ? Quels sont les rapports à l'espace à l'intérieur de ces lieux dont beaucoup sont aujourd’hui surpeuplés ? Espace d’ennui, de danger, de contrôle, de tri, de trafic, d'addiction, de maladie, de persécution, d'intégrisme et de folie, de suicide mais aussi de professionnalisation, d'amitié, d'amour, d'instruction scolaire, de sevrage, de remise en forme, de politisation, l'espace carcéral concentre les contrastes. Comment est-il affecté par le surpeuplement ? Quelles sont les résistances, adaptations, révoltes des salariés, des bénévoles, des détenus et de leurs familles ?

The scales of the management of territory

Cet appel à articles vise à faire réfléchir sur les dernières évolutions perceptibles du rôle des États et de la place des collectivités locales dans un contexte de contraction des finances publiques. Après de longues décennies de montée en puissance des collectivités infra étatiques dans la plupart des pays deux tendances se dessinent. La première s’appuie sur une remise en cause de cette multiplication d’échelons plus ou moins indépendants au nom du renouveau d’une certaine forme de légitimité technique et d’une volonté de limiter le coût de l’action publique. À l’inverse, la seconde renvoie à la volonté d’États désargentés de se décharger encore davantage sur les collectivités locales. L’exemple français n’est pas isolé.
