  Borders in the Americas – Integration, Security and Migrations

  In the aftermath of the collapse of the Soviet Union, many analysts and experts argued that the world had reached the “end of history” [Fukuyama, 1992] and that regional and local organizations and free trade agreements (among which the European Union appeared to be a model of integration) signaled the emergence of a world without borders. Yet, thirty years later, the reality seems to be altogether different. Today, it is clear that “borders are back”. Whether these borders are challenged, violated, transcended, consolidated, or integrated, they remain necessarily at the heart of the political debate. This symposium will focus on a specific geographic area: the Americas.

  The First World War in the Caribbean - publication of a collective work

  Publication d'un ouvrage collectif

  Le livre sera consacré à l'impact de la première guerre mondiale dans les Antilles. La première guerre mondiale a donné lieu à un grand nombre de recherches universitaires. Elle représente une rupture fondamentale dans l’histoire du XXème siècle. Comme le signale George-Henri Soutou la Grande Guerre a été la « matrice du XXème siècle ». Même des territoires très éloignés des tranchées et des champs de bataille européens furent durablement ébranlés par les conséquences de ce conflit. L’Australie commémore toujours la bataille de Gallipoli, au Canada les batailles de Vimy ou de Passchendaele font partie de la mémoire collective, des historiens ont montré quels ont été les implications de cette guerre dans les colonies africaines et asiatiques. En revanche, la mémoire des pays latino-américains était jusqu’à récemment incomplète.

  Wars and political violence in modern European and American societies (19th-21st century)

  “Amnis” Journal

  Amnis Review seeks to open up a reflection on the synergies that exist between war and political violence – both real and symbolic – and to ascertain to what extent the two phenomena are interlinked as well as how far they can be regarded as an essential area of research for gaining an understanding of the historical processes at work during a given period. To this end, Amnis proposes a long-term study focused on the contemporary period in order to analyse not only the impact of conflicts, such as the two world wars that left their mark on the 20^th century, but also the consequences of the many civil wars, colonisation wars and the various other types of confrontations that have punctuated the history of European and American societies from the 19^th century to the present.

  Thinking the right wing in Latin America in the 20th century

  Cet événement vise à poursuivre les discussions entamées lors du premier symposium « Penser les droites en Amérique latine au XX^e siècle », qui s’est tenu à Paris en janvier 2014. À l’instar de ce premier événement, nous voulons contribuer à l'élaboration d'une réflexion universitaire sur les droites, leurs promoteurs et défenseurs, leurs organisations, leurs idées et leurs pratiques. À cette fin, nous invitons les chercheurs issus de différentes sciences sociales et humaines à soumettre des articles qui nous permettent de mieux connaître les organisations, les idées et les identités des droites latino-américaines au XX^e siècle.

  Thinking rights in Latin America in the 20th century

  This conference purports to think about the right-wing in twentieth-century Latin America. We shall seek to discover whether the current Latin American right-wing movements are merely the prolongation of XIXth century conservatism, or if a series of events might explain the emergence of new actors in the XXth century. This will enable us to enquire into which geographical scale - national or continental - is relevant when examining this concept. We expect papers from scholars in various social sciences, based on monographic and comparative historical examples. Our purpose is to historicize the concept and the object.
