100 years of universal suffrage in Luxembourg

2019 will mark the 100th anniversary of the introduction of universal suffrage in Luxembourg. On this occasion, the Chamber of Deputies and the National Museum of History and Art (MNHA) will organise a major exhibition on the historical background, the establishment of universal suffrage in 1919 and the consequences of the democratisation process of Luxembourg’s society. In this context, a scientific conference will be held. It will cover both the origins of the discussion on universal suffrage and the struggle surrounding its introduction in the Grand Duchy as well as its establishment in the years 1917-1919 and its effects in the following decades.

Marcel Reich-Ranicki: popular literary criticism?

Critique et journaliste télégénique ayant consacré sa vie entière à la transmission de la littérature, Marcel Reich-Ranicki incarne une critique littéraire que l’on peut désigner comme « populaire », dans les différentes acceptions du terme. C’est cette forme de critique, mais aussi d’écriture de l’histoire littéraire et de transmission de la littérature que ce numéro 65 (2019) de Germanica entend saisir, analyser et interroger avec les instruments des sciences humaines. Quelles conceptions du canon littéraire a-t-il défendues ? Dans quelle tradition se tient par exemple la conception pragmatique de la littérature comme refuge, thérapie ou aide à vivre qui, depuis l’expérience du ghetto de Varsovie qu’il relate dans son autobiographie Mein Leben (1999), semble fonder maints critères d’évaluation de cet autodidacte malgré lui ?

Gemeinschaftsformen der Moderne – Mechanismen eines Konstrukts

In the centre of this interdisciplinary workshop are above all the processes of communalization of imagined communities. How different these processes are can be presented through different examples for imagined communities. Nations (Anderson) aim to unite a homogeneous group with the same language, religion or culture. International organisations as well as transnational movements or networks share ideals, but also strive for concrete political and social goals. These processes may also be seen in the Nazi Volksgemeinschaftenwhich demanded the subordination of the individual for the benefit of the collective body, and thereby promised the fulfilment of individual happiness.

By choosing 1989 as a starting point of reflection, this conference aims at questioning the way documentary and fiction films contribute to the understanding of both past and historical present and to provide a general overview on the relationship between cinema and post/communist society.

Depuis trois ans, huit chercheurs en sciences humaines de Lorraine, de la Sarre et du Luxembourg étudient la circulation des informations médiatiques dans la grande région. Plusieurs terrains étroitement articulés permettent de rendre compte de la construction, ou plus exactement de la difficile construction, d'un « espace médiatique grand régional » à travers des frontières politiques, culturelles ou sociales en permanente redéfinition. Les résultats seront discutés durant ces journées d'études avec des chercheurs confirmés et des doctorants.

International Medieval Congress

Script is not a neutral communication medium. Scripts were particularly used throughout the Middle Ages to stage the idea of Empire, power and domination. The writing has the ability to connote authority and Empire and to inspire respect. On the other hand, the scriptural domain is a world in itself with its coherence and history. The idea of an ‘Empire of letters’ may have emerged within this world too. Both parts of this “empire of letters” are relevant for the palaeographical sessions on the specific thematic strand of ‘Empire’ organised at the International Medieval Congress 2014 in Leeds and sponsored by Apices and Cap Digital.

Karl May in France : a failed reception ?

Le dossier thématique du numéro 7 de Strenae portera sur les explications possibles d’une absence de réception de Karl May en France, depuis le XIX^e siècle jusqu’à aujourd’hui. Ce dossier a pour but de s’interroger sur les raisons et les manifestations de ce qui ressemble à une réception manquée de Karl May en France ; on pourra s’interroger sur les différences entre les imaginaires des deux pays dans un contexte européen, mais aussi sur la place du Nouveau Monde pour un lectorat français. L’intérêt pour l’Orient qui se manifeste dans certains de ses romans ne semble pas correspondre non plus aux attentes des lecteurs français ou tout du moins ne pas trouver le même écho ou bien entrer en concurrence avec des auteurs français qui traitent de la même problématique.
