Contemporary American Fiction in the Face of Technical Innovation

Cette conférence se propose d'interroger les relations de la fiction américaine aux innovations qui ont marqué les premières décennies du XXI^e siècle : internet, médias sociaux, objets et environnements intelligents, intelligence artificielle, nanotechnologies, ingénierie génétique et autres biotechnologies, transhumanisme. Ces innovations techniques redéfinissent la manière dont nous habitons notre monde, interagissons les uns avec les autres et appréhendons l'humain dans son rapport de plus en plus étroit à la machine, non plus, comme autrefois, soigné ou réparé, mais désormais augmenté ou remplacé. Qu'en est-il alors de nos pratiques artistiques et culturelles ? Ces avancées récentes modifient-ils la langue et la littérature ?

Emergence of Mind

One of the impressive new areas of scientific interest is the science of the brain. New tools and new theoretical approaches have resulted in new insights into how humans get around in the world and understand themselves. But this new science has its roots in broadly philosophical investigations of the mind going back to the classic thinkers from the beginning of modernity. In this conference, we will juxtapose contemporary scientists working on the brain with historians of philosophy and science working on classic figures like Descartes, Hobbes, Locke and Cudworth, among others, to see how the new can illuminate the old, and the old the new.

Arizona Graduate Conference in French

Le Département de français et d'italien à l'université d'Arizona est ravi d'organiser ce colloque auquel tous les mastérants et doctorants en français sont invités à participer afin d'avoir l'opportunité de : présenter leur recherche lors d'une communication orale avec le format traditionnel de 20 minutes pour la communication suivie de 10 minutes pour les questions et commentaires, en français ou en anglais ; ou présenter leur recherche en cours dans une table ronde qui permettra une communication de 15 minutes suivie d'un véritable échange et retour d'information, en français ou en anglais ; s'inscrire à des ateliers ludiques de recherche sur deux thèmes différents (voir Ateliers ci-dessous) ; rencontrer d'autres étudiants et des professeurs ; assister à deux sessions plénières de chercheurs éminents portant sur des thématiques différentes ; assister à un film francophone pour l'ouverture du colloque le 23 février.

Sedition and revolt in modern european political thought

We wish to bring together international contributors once more in a discussion of the political thought brought about by various uprisings between the end of the Middle Ages and the modern era, whether it be reflections over a particular event, or more general considerations over the causes of sedition and protest movements, the means to prevent or suppress new episodes, and their adverse – or regenerative – effects. This analysis will focus on political writings composed for government use or for a wider audience – memoirs and reports, as well as treatises on the statecraft that proliferated throughout Europe in the modern era and saw wide acceptance. There is a tendency in the current literature to make use of historical examples that are distant in time and place, and a need to consider the possible repercussions of theoretical reflection from experience drawn from recent or contemporary revolts.

Medieval Textuality and its material display

The International Medieval Society organizes its 13^th Annual Symposium in Paris, on the theme of Words in the Middle Ages. Between the increasing use of paperless media forms and the rise in the number of digital collections, medievalists are seeking to adapt to these new means of producing knowledge about the Middle Ages. At the same time, scholars in this field are also trying to outline the methodological and historical issues that affect the study of words, which now simultaneously exist in the form of primary sources, codices, rolls, charters and inscriptions, digitally reproduced images, and the statistical and lexicographical data made possible by storage platforms and analytical tools.

Fondements théologiques de la théorie constitutionnelle moderne : XVIe-XVIIe siècles

This conference aims to assemble different studies laying bridges between modern constitutional theories and theology from the perspective of intellectual history. Though modernity of law and politics has been usually accounted in the context of Reformation, the paper-givers’ approaches to the question will not be restricted in any confessional perspective, Protestant or Catholic. For, whatever the word ‘theology’ may have connoted in the time of religious confrontations, theoretical attempts to legitimize human rights and political authority at those days can be regarded as part of the general current of philosophical investigations, in a new manner and with different foci than ever, into the concept of justice with reference to that of God.

This international symposium will provide a multidisciplinary analysis of museum and university discourses, concepts, experiments and experiences, and of their intellectual origins and the institutional frameworks within which they are produced across diverse local and national contexts. The aim is to better understand the various ways of tackling the subject so as to highlight new areas of research convergence, thereby giving new impetus to international cooperation.

How do we globalize the long eighteenth century?

Every student of the 17th or 18th century encounters in his or her own way the global historical dimensions of the more or less ‘domestic’ (provincial, national) subject being addressed. For decades, perhaps, many of us ignored these ramifications, which among other things were hard to treat because we are generally hardpressed to bring to such subjects the kind of specialized knowledge we are used to. (There are of course exceptions, involving colleagues who consciously adopt a global approach, e.g. Atlantic studies, though even these are no doubt truncated in different ways.) In all, the global was not an ‘aporia’ of our studies, so much as something more or less difficult to draw into the discussion and, in that sense, an ‘impensé’.

Vernacular Bible and Religious Reforms

International Colloquium

Dans les développements religieux en Europe du nord-ouest, la Bible était souvent instrumentalisée, comme étalon, source de conflit ou tout simplement pour son intérêt propre. Ce fut le cas avec la Devotio Moderna, l’humanisme biblique, la Réformation et la Contre-Réforme catholique. La mise à disposition des Écritures Saintes en langue vernaculaire représente le trait d’union entre ces mouvements de réforme dans leurs rapports respectifs avec la Bible. Bien que la Bible ait influencé de plus en plus en profondeur tous les aspects de la culture et de la société en Europe du nord-ouest, son étude scientifique a mené à la désacralisation du livre dès les dernières décennies du seizième siècle, et s’est ensuite inscrite en Europe dans les tendances de sécularisation. Au moyen des pamphlets notamment, la discussion s’est disséminée sur une plus grande échelle. L'objet de ce colloque est de dégager la signification et l’influence mutuelle des traductions de la Bible en langue vernaculaire et des réformes religieuses.
