  Associative Worlds : Grasping Politics by doing Ethnography on Associations

  Special issue 2021, vol. 47(3) of the Swiss Journal of Sociology

  This special issue aims to discuss ethnographic approaches that allow to shed light on the plurality of associations, societies and clubs. The aim is to examine the plurality of associational practices and meanings of associations, in order to contribute to a new scrutiny of the political dimension of associations. On the one hand, the papers will allow, by relying on ethnographic enquiries, to grasp the large variety of situations and worldviews that the world of associations entails, and through this, to open the way for underlying sociological questions. On the other hand, they shall question the contribution of ethnography to an exploration of the political potential of associational action - without limiting themselves to an organizational or motivational approach of the origins of an association.

  Landscapes of the strange

  Art and research relating to the visible and invisible traces of conflicts - interdisciplinary and inter-artistic approaches to war heritag

  This symposium is part of the research project “landscape(s) of the strange. On visible and invisible traces of a regional heritage in transformation. Artistic and theoretical (re)-constructions of a cross-border history marked by major conflicts” started in 2016. To begin with, the project approached the notion of “trace” or “mark” in its material (heritage, architecture, vegetation) and immaterial (memory, culture) dimensions, especially those related to the concrete landscape of Lorraine which bears the mark of a conflictual history opposing Frenchmen and Germans, especially during the two World Wars.

  Mapping possible worlds

  Modality across linguistic categories

  Au-delà ou en-deçà des barrières disciplinaires, l'étude des modalités impose d'abord de franchir les limites catégorielles posées par la grammaire traditionnelle, à commencer par celles des parties du discours. Historiquement, l’étude des modalités a longtemps privilégié deux classes : les verbes dits modaux (p.ex. fr. pouvoir, devoir) et des marqueurs de type adverbial, (particules ou adveres de phrase). La recherche en linguistique a, dans ces dernières décennies, dépassé les frontières catégorielles et étudié la modalité telle qu'elle s'exprime dans d’autres classes de mots : adjectifs, articles. D'autres études ont illustré la porosité des frontières de la notion de modalité sur le plan du signifié : la modalité semble parfois se caractériser comme un phénomène émergent étroitement corrélé aux valeurs aspectuelles ou temporelles des formes verbales, mais aussi aux présuppositions d'existence mise en jeu par les quantifieurs,ou à des phénomènes de diathèse. Partant de cette reconsidération des signifiés modaux, la journée d'études croisera des contributions de tous les champs disciplinaires concernés par le domaine des modalités afin de permettre un tour d'horizon des perspectives théoriques de la recherche sur ce sujet.
