1956-1958 : une époque de révolutions qui changèrent l’Afrique (et le monde)

The objective of this panel is to compare the various social mobilizations that took place in Africa during the years 1956-1958 and which arguably constitute a historical watershed. The main aim of the panel is not the making of an abstract comparative analysis, but the analysis, based on the testimonial material collected, of how the memory of these events has been structured over time. Moreover, we are interested in understanding what the impacts of these social movements were on the structuring of states and what continuities can be found between the mobilizations of that period and the ary social mobilizations that have shaken the continent in the last ten years, from the ‘Arab Spring’ of 2011 onwards.

L’espace centre-américain révèle constamment sa complexité, c’est pourquoi une première question guide la réflexion de cet appel, à savoir : de quelle manière et avec quels outils pouvons-nous penser les espaces centre-américains contemporains, leur histoire et leur configuration ? Michel Foucault se demande dans sa conférence « Des espaces autres » dans quelle mesure l’époque contemporaine serait probablement celle de l’espace à la différence du XIX^e siècle et son obsession avec le temps. Ce tournant géographique nous permet de penser les faits humains et sociaux à partir d’un endroit déterminé et par conséquent la façon dont cet espace est analysé, imaginé ou recréé.

Kontinuitäten und Brüche von der Zwischenkriegszeit bis heute

Angesichts des Gefühls der »Krise« der Demokratie in den letzten Jahren, versinnbildlicht durch den Aufstieg populistischer Bewegungen, ist heute in der politischen Debatte vieler europäischer Länder der Vergleich mit der Situation der Zwischenkriegszeit allgegenwärtig. Ist dieser Vergleich sinnvoll, um die für beide Perioden spezifischen Herausforderungen demokratischer Praxis zu verstehen? Ausgehend von dieser Frage eröffnet der Workshop das vom Centre interdisciplinaire d’études et de recherches sur l’Allemagne (CIERA) unterstützte Forschungsprogramm Welche Demokratie(n)? Reflexionen über die Krise, Modernisierung und Grenzen der Demokratie in Deutschland, Frankreich, England und Mitteleuropa zwischen 1919 und 1939.

France and the European Union – Part-time teaching post at New York University (NYU) Paris

The course France & the European Union investigates the political economy of European integration from the end of the Second World War to present day with a particular focus on the role played by France in this development. It considers the incentives that have led an ever-larger group of European nations to form multilateral agreements around a growing range of policies that now incorporate such diverse spheres as defense, economics, and human rights. It then turns to the challenges Europe faces in maintaining the European Union (EU) in the face of growing skepticism among national electorates as well as attempts to undermine the EU (by Russia) or withdraw support from it (by the U.K. and the U.S.).

V. Internationale Kongress der Mythokritik „Mythos und audiovisuelle Gestaltung”

Der V. Internationale Kongress der Mythokritik „Mythos und audiovisuelle Gestaltung” ist eine Initiative des Forschungsprogramms Acis&Galatea, finanziert von der Autonomen Gemeinschaft Madrid und dem Europäischen Sozialfonds der EU. Der Kongress findet an vier Standorten mit den folgenden Themenschwerpunkten statt: „Germanische Mythen“ an der Universität Alcalá, „Klassische Mythen“ an der Universidad Autónoma, „Biblische Mythen“ an der Universidad Francisco de Vitoria und „Moderne Mythen“ an der Universidad Complutense. Beitragsvorschläge von interessierten Wissenschaftlernkönnen an einen der vier Standorte gesendet werden. Hierbei soll die Rolle des Kinos, der Fernsehserien und der Videospiele bei der Gestaltung und Adaption der antiken, mittelalterlichen und modernen Mythen in der heutigen Welt untersucht werden.

Cinéma diasporique sud-asiatique : Rencontres

The fourth issue of /DESI/ will focus on the question of encounters in diasporic South Asian cinema: Afghanistan, India, Maldives, Pakistan, Bangladesh Nepal and Sri Lanka. The transformation of this contemporary human condition into filmic material coincides with a turn in the scientific study of diasporas. Forced migrations, which generate a movement of displacement and settlement in home territories, movements of arrivals, caught in a logic of deterritorialization, diasporas – and more particularly South Asian diasporas – are all relocated in transnational and transcultural spaces. Cinema holds a mirror to this experience of movement through this new “ethnoscape” (Appadurai) made up of shifts and disjunctures, free flows and political hurdles, border-crossings and assignment of identity.

Il débattra deux questions clé, relatives aux « géographies » de la critique d’architecture : ses frontières disciplinaires et ses territoires partagés, notamment avec la critique d’autres disciplines, depuis les dernières décennies du XIX_^e siècle.

Captives, recruited, migrants: Empires and labor mobilization

From XVIIth century to present days

This workshop starts from the hypothesis that warfare and labor are strongly connected in Empire building and their evolution, to begin with war captives in early modern Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas and to continue with the various forms of recruitment in land and maritime empires in all those areas. Captives as well as local peasants were soldiers, seamen, and colonists at the same time. Forms of forced recruitment were still important in the XIX^th century (the press system in Britain and its variations in the Empire, recruitments in Russia) and continued in the XX^th century, in Europe during the wars, outside of Europe during and after colonization and decolonization up through nowadays children soldiers.

La durée de vie des Anglais a augmenté mais les disparités sanitaires se sont accentuées dans le même temps (Marmot, 2010). L’objectif de la journée d’études permettra de lever le voile sur ces phénomènes et de les analyser au regard d’enquêtes qualitatives et quantitatives par exemple. Il s’agira d’étudier les réalités de la vie quotidienne de ces parents, les inégalités sociales et géographiques en matière de santé, de comprendre les mécanismes et d’envisager les enjeux sanitaires sur les futures générations tout en sachant que la responsabilité de la santé publique est transférée du National Health Service aux collectivités locales, selon les propositions du gouvernement de coalition.

The conference would like to address the issue from various perspectives and ask e.g. the following questions: To which levels of medical knowledge and activity (skill, professional knowledge, experience, relationship with patients) did and does the claim of expertise refer to? Which strategies, rhetorics and kinds of self-fashioning were and are used in order to achieve, retain or reject the status of expertise? Which was and is the relationship between expertise, profession(nalism), institutionalization and specialization? In what respect is there a difference between a physician's claim of expertise and that of other health professionals?

Cet événement réunira chercheurs, doctorants, professeurs et membres des différents corps d’armée engagés dans les programmes de pacification et de résolution des conflits au Nigéria. / From March 7-9, 2012, IFRA-Nigeria will participate to the sixth Annual Conference and General Assembly of the Society for Peace Studies and Practice (SPSP), organized at Jaji (Kaduna State, Nigeria) in collaboration with the Nigeria Army Peacekeeping Centre. Le Centre d'études interdisciplinaires du XXe siècle de l'université de Coimbra (CEIS20 - UC) et le GELYC (Groupe d'études sur la littérature et le cinéma) de l'université de Salamanca, appellent à des propositions de communication au colloque international « Le cinéma à travers la critique. Cinéma, théorie, littérature et critique de cinéma dans la péninsule ibérique », qui aura lieu à Coimbra, Portugal, à 20 et 21 novembre 2008. Ce colloque cherche à réunir des contributions des disciplines les plus variées sur les relations entre la critique et le cinéma au Portugal et en Espagne.
