  Connecting Mediterranean and Atlantic History

  2nd meeting of the Atlantic Italies Network

  The Atlantic Italies Network – a developing network of scholars working on economic entanglements and related cultural phenomena that emerged between Italian-speaking territories and the Atlantic world from the fifteenth to the nineteenth century – aims at examining connections related to European states without colonies as well as their links to sub-Saharan Africa and the Americas and at contributing to current attempts to analyse early modern Italian territories in their global contexts. The second meeting of the network will particularly appreciate papers involving economic dimensions related to shipping, trade and economic interconnections, but we welcome all proposals contributing to our overall perspective.

  In 1980, François Furet established the first visiting chair in North American studies at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in partnership with the French-American Foundation. Yet, it was not until 1984 and the election of Jean Heffer as permanent full professor that the Center for North American Studies (CENA) came into being. Despite pioneering efforts in some English departments and the creation of the first university chair in North American history at the Sorbonne in 1967, there was significant disparity between the importance of the USA in the contemporary world and the weakness of North American studies in France. Over the last thirty years and under the supervision of Jean Heffer and François Weil, the CENA has become one of the leading institutions for North American scholarship in France and Europe.

  El fraude monetario en los espacios atlanticos: pasado y presente (siglos XV al XX)

  Simposio (HIST/RI-5) del V° Congreso Europeo CEISAL de Latinoamericanistas: Las Relaciones intercontinentales entre Europa y las Americas

  El descubrimiento de América por Cristobal Colón en 1492 ha impuesto, desde el comienzo de la colonización europea, unas relaciones de poder, entre los dos continentes, fundadas sobre la búsqueda de los metales preciosos y la producción monetaria. Durante más de tres siglos, los metales americanos (oro y plata) han garantizado la confianza de los actores de la economía europea en la moneda de sus Estados. Eso ha funcionado, tanto para la metrópolis colonial (que fue la España de los Habsburgos y de los Borbones) como para los Estados que comerciaban con ella (Francia) o, más bien, praticaban el contrabando de metales preciosos dentro de las Indias Occidentales (Las Provincias Unidas e Inglaterra).
