  Time in the Middle Ages

  16th annual symposium of the International Medieval Society – Paris

  For its 16^th annual symposium, the International Medieval Society Paris invites scholarly papers on any aspect of time in the Middle Ages. Papers may deal with the experience or exploitation of time, its reckoning or measuring, its inscription, its theorization, or the question of how or why or whether we should demarcate the “Middle Ages.” Papers focusing on historical or cultural material from medieval France or post-Roman Gaul, or on texts written in medieval French or Occitan, are particularly encouraged, but compelling papers on other material will also be considered.

  Metamorphosis: the landslide of identity

  Dans le cadre du projet « À partir d'Ovide », l'association culturelle Rodopis organise un colloque titré Metamorfosi: identità in smottamento (Metamorphosis: the Landslide of Identity), qui aura lieu à Urbino (Italie) le 30 novembre et 1 décembre 2017. Le colloque se propose d'analyser dans une perspective multidiscliplinaire (la participation de sociologues, anthropologues, historiens, philosophes, experts de littératures anciennes et modernes est souhaitée) les problèmes posés par les notions d'indentité, alterité, transformation, soit à partir de l'examen de cas d'études, soit à partir d'une perspective epistémologique.

  The geometry of medieval images

  On le sait (le sait-on ?), une image, au Moyen-Âge, n’est pas composée selon les règles de la perspective. C’est à la compréhension d’un autre modèle géométrique, sur lequel s’appuyèrent les images médiévales, et qui disparut au cours du XVI^e siècle, que ce colloque sera consacré. Pour quelles raisons ? Les images médiévales ont-elles quelque rapport avec la géométrie ? N’est-ce pas la plus mauvaise manière de parler d’elles, qui s’entêtent à ne pas respecter des règles simples de proportion, qui sont parfois incapables de tracer deux lignes parallèles, et qui souvent n’essaient même pas d’esquisser un paysage un tant soi peu cohérent ? Plutôt que de penser les termes « géométrie » et « espace » d’une manière toujours défaillante par rapport aux images médiévales, nous voudrions les maintenir, quitte à redéfinir ce qu’on appelle, au Moyen Age, une géométrie, un espace ; et une image ?

  Medieval Textuality and its material display

  The International Medieval Society organizes its 13^th Annual Symposium in Paris, on the theme of Words in the Middle Ages. Between the increasing use of paperless media forms and the rise in the number of digital collections, medievalists are seeking to adapt to these new means of producing knowledge about the Middle Ages. At the same time, scholars in this field are also trying to outline the methodological and historical issues that affect the study of words, which now simultaneously exist in the form of primary sources, codices, rolls, charters and inscriptions, digitally reproduced images, and the statistical and lexicographical data made possible by storage platforms and analytical tools.

  Abraham Ibn Ezra, a Twelfth-Century Polymath who Straddled Arabic, Hebrew and Latin Culture

  In the middle of the eighth century, with the completion of the Islamic conquest of the eastern, northern and part of the western shores of the Mediterranean, Jews managed to successfully integrate into the ruling society without losing their religious and national identity. They willingly adopted the Arabic language, spoke Arabic fluently, wrote Arabic in Hebrew letters (Judeo-Arabic), and employed Arabic in the composition of their literary works. The twelfth century witnessed a cultural phenomenon that saw Jewish scholars gradually abandon the Arabic language and adopt Hebrew, previously used almost exclusively for religious and liturgical purposes, for the first time as a vehicle for the expression of secular and scientific ideas.

  Construir lo sagrado en la europa románica : reliquia, espacio, imagen y rito

  VI coloquio Ars Mediaevalis

  Pour sa sixième édition, le colloque Ars Mediaevalis, qui se déroulera à Aguilar de Campoo (Espagne) du 30 septembre au 2 octobre 2016 a choisi d'analyser la notion de « sacré » à l'époque romane et ses liens avec les productions artistiques et leurs fonctions dans l'espace de l'église et au cours des cérémonies liturgiques. Comme les éditions précédentes, le colloque fera alterner les conférences plénières et les communications. Les chercheurs intéressés par la thématique sont invités à proposer leur résumé avant le 30 juin 2016.

  On the dynamics of production (Distraction/Interference – Resistance/Accident)

  In ordinary terms, the word production refers to an act of creation and its result, or to a process at the end of which there is a materialisation of some kind, or to the act of making something present. By productively interfering with this common idea of productionwe would like to work towards establishing different ways of thinking about this concept.

  Distraction and Interference as well as Resistance and Accident are exemplary categories of the unexpected moments that may or may not take place in the course of production. They remind us that production cannot be reduced to the momentum of "achieving a product". Rather, these categories help to reveal the physical presence of those who produce, the materiality of the objects involved and the unforeseen effects of the "product". Furthermore, they allow us to question the alleged linearity of the processes that form part of production. Thereby, Distraction, Interference, Resistance and Accident make us aware to what extent production involves a "lived" and "living" tension between the producer and what is being produced, between the subject and the world.
