Territorial fractures, ruptures, discontinuities and borders: issues for planners

The French-British Study Planning Group / Groupe franco-britannique de recherche en aménagement et urbanisme, has worked for 20 years on the building of networks and intellectual bridges between the communities of planning research and practice on both sides of the Channel. Since 2005 it has been formally constituted as a sub-group of the Association of European Schools of Planning (AESOP). The potential retreat of the current United Kingdom from the European Union presents a new context and it is natural that the group should turn its attention to the territorial impacts which could arise as a result. It is also an occasion to reflect more widely on all forms of territorial discontinuities, ruptures and borders, including those at the national, regional and local scales, and which are of concern to planning research and practice.

Time in the Middle Ages

16th annual symposium of the International Medieval Society – Paris

For its 16^th annual symposium, the International Medieval Society Paris invites scholarly papers on any aspect of time in the Middle Ages. Papers may deal with the experience or exploitation of time, its reckoning or measuring, its inscription, its theorization, or the question of how or why or whether we should demarcate the “Middle Ages.” Papers focusing on historical or cultural material from medieval France or post-Roman Gaul, or on texts written in medieval French or Occitan, are particularly encouraged, but compelling papers on other material will also be considered.

Criticisms of democracy, authoritarianism and populism in Europe

Continuities and disruptions from the inter-war period until today

Facing the feeling of »crisis« of democracy arising in recent years and symbolized by the rise of populist movements, there is a recurrent comparison with the inter-war situation in today’s political debate in many European countries. Is this comparison relevant to understand the specific democratic practices during both periods? Building on this question, the workshop serves as kick-off for the research program Which democracy/democracies? Reflections on the crisis, modernization and limits of democracy in Germany, France, England and Central Europe between 1919 and 1939 supported by the Centre interdisciplinaire d’études et de recherches sur l’Allemagne (CIERA).

The Literary Exchanges and Intellectual Encounters of Humanists in the Northern Provinces during the Renaissance

First Saint-Omer international colloquium

The first Saint-Omer international colloquium is co-organized by the Centre de Recherche et d’Études Histoire et Sociétés (EA 4027 CREHS - Université d’Artois), and the Cultural Services of St Omer country’s Urban district (CAPSO). It is part of the pluri-disciplinary research programme The Renaissance in the Northern Provinces, coordinated since 2015 by Pr. Charles Giry-Deloison and Dr. Laurence Baudoux, and is in the continuity of the conferences already held at the University of Artois. The Saint-Omer colloquium aims to address all expressions of the Renaissance in the field of Humanities (philosophy, literature, arts), in the former Southern Netherlands in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It will focus in particular on the exchanges, encounters and bonds between the main actors of this cultural revival.

Lorsque le XIX^e siècle arrivait à sa première moitié, les rives du Rio de la Plata deviennnent le théâtre d’un jeu sophistiqué mené, entre autres, par les populations criollas installées dans le bassin platense, les immigrés récemment arrivés d’horizons divers, les États européens monarchiques, les forces libérales et bonapartistes qui s’y opposent, l’Église, les cercles éclairés anticléricaux, les États américains qui viennent d'être créés. C’est dans cet espace fait de rencontres, de conflits et de mélanges de langues et d’idéaux qu’est né à Montevideo Isidore Ducasse, comte de Lautréamont, auteur d’une œuvre, les Chants de Maldoror, qui s’est révélée être la réécriture d’une tradition et la matière d’un avenir, toujours ouverte à des réinterprétations, à des recréations, à des versions et à des traductions.

Walruses, Whales and Narwhals

Maritime Ivories in Western Europe, 900-1500

In the history of carved ivories, maritime mammals have often been eclipsed by the elephant, considered as a nobler ivory to which walrus or whale ivory would only be a poor man's substitute. But this historiographical view is not without its shortcomings, as not only did walrus hunting play a significant role in the first European explorations toward the west, but the trade for those ivories went as far as the Islamic world and even the Far East. This session at the 52^nd International Congress on Medieval Studies, sponsored by the National Museum of Scotland, aims to address the variety of questions posed by the maritime ivories: how the raw material was collected, how it was traded, the workshops that carved them and their specific symbolic value in medieval treasuries

French Citizenship and Colonization in the 20th century (until 1946)

Les dimensions impériales de la citoyenneté française sont à la fois bien et mal connues. Des travaux récents ont rappelé que la césure entre citoyens et sujets s’est construite de façon progressive et par ajustements entre les enjeux de pouvoir à l’échelle locale et impériale, les logiques juridiques et les revendications portées par des acteurs mus par des intérêts différents, sinon contradictoires. La multiplication des recherches d’histoire sociale, politique et culturelle de la colonisation permet désormais d’écrire une histoire plurivoque des dimensions impériales de la citoyenneté française en se demandant comment tous ces acteurs formulent la question qui sert de titre au colloque « quels citoyens pour l’empire ? » et quelles réponses ils lui apportent, ou comment ils font en sorte d’empêcher qu’elle soit débattue.

L'année 2013 est marquée par la célébration des 50 ans du Traité de l'Elysée. C'est à cette occasion que le département des études interculturelles sous la direction de Prof. Dr. Dorothee Röseberg organise un colloque franco-allemand qui a pour sujet le Franco-Allemand. La manifestation aura lieu du 14 au 16 juin dans les bâtiments de la LEUCORA à Lutherstadt Wittenberg. French History is seeking contributions, in French and English, for a special issue on "Animals in French History," edited by Christopher Pearson (Liverpool) and Peter Sahlins (UC Berkeley). Proposals for articles should bring together theory and original empirical research that draws on new ways of studying animals and animal-human relations in France since the Renaissance.

Between generational continuities and ruptures: Research on the Algerian war of independence Fifty years later

La guerre d’indépendance algérienne, en tant qu’événement fondateur majeur de l’après-seconde guerre mondiale, peut constituer, en termes de « générations », un espace-temps bien défini et homogène. Dès lors, il est légitime de mieux comprendre et d’interroger la nouveauté des paradigmes d’une génération de chercheurs inscrits dans un champ de recherche en construction. Peut-on déceler des ruptures ou des continuités dans les objets, les sujets, les méthodes, les approches macro et micro-historiques ? Quelle place les sources ont-elles dans ces travaux ? Existe-t-il des changements entre les travaux qui se veulent plus larges et exhaustifs et ceux qui se fondent sur des aspects plus localisés ? Quels sont les déplacements de paradigmes explicatifs que l’on peut observer ? Cette nouvelle génération évite-t-elle encore les présupposés idéologiques liés à une mémoire militante ? Au-delà des résultats et conclusions des travaux, le colloque devra aussi mettre en exergue les méthodes, les matériaux, les perspectives d’enquêtes engagés. Une attention particulière sera accordée aux propositions des doctorants et jeunes chercheurs.
