From the “Far East” to the “Indo-Pacific”

Crises, Conflicts, and Peace Processes in the Asia-Pacific (20th–21st Centuries)

1995: a “Black Box” for Reflections on Contemporary Japan

Revue « Ebisu. Études japonaises », numéro 64

The year 1995 is often regarded as a turning point in the history of contemporary Japan. The country suffered two traumatic shocks in rapid succession: the Kobe earthquake in January and the Tokyo subway sarin attacks carried out by the Aum Shinrikyō cult in March. It was also struck by an economic crisis following the collapse of the speculative bubble in the early 1990. Thirty years later, this issue brings together transdisciplinary perspectives—from case and comparative studies to longue durée analysis—to present a renewed understanding of 1995, reassess its importance and singularity, and confirm or challenge previous work.

Geosemiotics of Traces and Imprints of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Accident in the Tōhoku landscape

This PhD project aims to document the imprints and traces of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster through mapping, using an ethnographic and semiotic approach. It specifically seeks to explore the possibility of creating memorial traces of a radioactive disaster whose main characteristic is to be invisible, odorless, soundless, intangible—in a word, imperceptible.

Heritage Villages and Tourism: Local Issues, Global Experiences

In a societal context that calls for practices to be reinvented for a sustainable territorial development (Knafou, 2023), heritage villages are at the crossroads of several issues, both in terms for the actions of inhabitants and the participation of visitors and tourists. This conference, organised by ESTHUA, the National Institute of Tourism - INNTO France of the University of Angers, and ICUNA, the Joint Institute of the Universities of Ningbo and Angers, will focus on several issues relating to the heritage of villages and the challenges they face in terms of tourism, in particular: adaptation to local society, the natural, environmental and intangible dimensions of the heritage on offer, adaptation to tourist numbers and the involvement of local people in tourism development projects.

Cyber Strategy and Chinese Power: Emerging Threats and Geopolitical Issues

Laughter in Japanese Literature from the Heian Period to the Meiji Era

Laughter is omnipresent and plays an essential role in the ancient Japanese literary tradition. Its study provides a cross-disciplinary approach to classical Japanese literature, transcending the boundaries of genres (poetry/prose) or periods (classical period, Edo period, Meiji era). More specifically, the purpose of this one-day symposium is to identify and analyse the forms of laughter present in the reputedly 'serious' genres of classical Japanese poetry (waka) and especially the novel of the Heian period, as well as in productions from later periods.

Espaces et Sociétés’ perspective on the Chinese city and urbanization, through a notion that is both distinctive and paradoxical in China: public space. The title of this call for papers, “Chinese public space, a shared space?” questions on the one hand the specific definition of Chinese public space, which is undergoing very rapid changes, and on the other hand its ability to be “shared” locally and internationally.

    Seminar - Representation

    Architectural photography

“Architectural photography (kenchiku shashin 建築写真)” is an expansive and multifaceted notion, approached differently by architects, urban planners, interior designers, developers, publishers, amateur photographers, commissioned professional photographers, or artists. This confrontation of meanings and uses is what interests us. Indeed, while architectural photography has been widely and regularly displayed since the 19th century, through albums, dedicated magazines, serial publications, photobooks, and exhibitions, there is currently no in-depth study that allows for a global understanding. Therefore, we have decided to initiate a seminar that aims to formulate a definition of this notion that encompasses all of its complexity.

    Conference, symposium - Law

The relevance of Eugen Ehrlich’s thought to empirical methods of law

The year 2022 marks the centenary of Eugen Ehrlich's death. This great Austro- Hungarian jurist is often presented as the father of legal sociology. As a close observer of legal practices, he was the first to use and invent concepts that have become fundamental in legal sociology today, such as legal pluralism, living law, and legal consciousness. Ehrlich’s research revisits and reverses the illustrious tradition of the Pandects, established and perfected by legal scholars such as Savigny or Puchta. Although Ehrlich has inspired jurists around the world, he remains a little known figure in France. The present symposium is therefore devoted to reconsider the actuality of his thought, using the last chapters of his Grundlegung der Soziologie des Rechts (Foundation of the Sociology of Law) as a main reference. During the first day, specialists will introduce us to the concepts of his methodology of legal sociology and the influence he had on his contemporaries. Once the fundamentals have been established, the second day will highlight the dynamics of Ehrlich's thought for law contemporary research.

The animal in the Asian imagination : alter or alter ego ?

This conference proposes to explore the polysemy of the imaginary of the animal, especially the wild animal, in Asia and its functions: is it an "alter ego", a protective animal, bringing to humanity its own powers or a radical "alter", which represents a world other than humanity; what are the stakes of these various representations for humanity as well as for the sharing of the planet with the animal world? It seems to us that if man symbolically acquires the power of the animal, it is on the condition that he remains beyond a real or metaphorical man/animal border. Faced with the disappearance of primary spaces and non-modernized populations, the wild animal thus seems the ultimate reservoir of the anti-modern, of what escapes the anthropocene, what is not "for" humanity.

Lives of the Dead in Asia

    « Extrême-Orient, Extrême-Occident »

The dead inhabit the world in their own particular ways. In Asia, where life presupposes that physical substance, spirits and the flow of vital energy are united and held together, the moment of death is one of disjunction, even of dispersion. Faced with this phenomenon, numerous techniques as well as objects of various kinds allow the living to cultivate a relationship with the dead. Both anthropologists and historians have described and emphasised how vividly the dead are present among the living. This topic has seen new developments since the beginning of the century. Faced with the profusion of objects and techniques that allow the dead to evolve in the world of the living, this issue of “Lives of the Dead in Asia” intends to reflect on the ways the different vehicles of existence of the dead are produced and used.

Japan and its doubles. Study and representation of Japan’s territory and spatial planning through art and literature

« Ebisu. Études japonaises » – special issue

This special issue of Ebisu. Études japonaises focuses on the hypothetical heuristic value and the equally hypothetical performative role that artistic and literary representations, and even myths, play in the making of Japanese territory and the evolution of the reasoning and principles of their planning. Conversely, this issue also seeks to measure and analyse the impact of the dynamics of spatial planning on Japanese artistic and literary production, and even on possible inflections of the great myths that structure them.

The judicialization of social and environmental issues in Japan

    Continuities, transformations, evolutions

This special edition aims to gain insight into how the use of the legal system and litigation have evolved. In Japan, recourse to the courts is relatively rare, but litigations have increased since the end of the 1980s in areas such as labour, consumer protection, family law and, more recently, climate change. Is a process of “judicialization” (shihōka) underway in Japan?
