Estimating, Locating, and Comparing Mental Disorders in the Second Part of the Twentieth Century
Psychiatric Epidemiology in Historical Perspective
Psychiatric epidemiology – the study of the distribution of mental disorders within a population – emerged on the scientific scene during the second half of the 20th century. However, unlike the fields of psychiatry, psychology, and psychoanalysis, psychiatric epidemiology has yet to be studied by historians, largely due to the fact that it was only professionalized much later. Several factors can explain the field’s relative “invisibility”: the still recent standardization of its methods, the diversity of local scientific traditions, nations’ varying public health policies, the range of different sites for observation (rural or urban studies, comparisons between neighbouring communities, insular populations, cohorts) as well as the varieties of interdisciplinary studies implemented within the scientific community (medicine, psychology, sociology, anthropology, biostatistics). These elements highlight the diversity of potential sources, and thus necessarily bring forward the question: how should one go about writing a history of this largely unrecognized field?

L’histoire transnationale de l’industrialisation Française avant 1914
The aim of this conference will be to analyse the characteristics of 19th-century French industrialisation and to understand how these distinguish France from other countries that went through the same process in the same era. Instead of using the English case as the only reference (as is customary), particular attention will be paid to a comparison between France and other continental European countries, especially Germany. One important dimension is the place of national industrialisation trajectories in an international and transnational context; in the case of France, colonial empire played an undeniable role.

Il tema delle fake news è di grande attualità e rilevanza per i mezzi e i fini con cui queste vengono messe in circolazione: esse hanno il potere di alterare la realtà e di far circolare notizie prive di fondamento.Durante la giornata di studi si indagherà la modalità in cui l’alterazione del messaggio è stata assunta come verità nella storia dell’arte, ripercorrendo l’iter del processo artistico e la conseguente creazione delle fake news.

How sustainable are India’s Smart Cities?
Critically assessing the projects and politics underpinning the Smart City Mission
Following on a first meeting devoted to India’s Smart City Mission held in September 2018, the specific aim of this international workshop is to focus on issues of social and environmental sustainability. On the basis of field-based investigations, the presenters will critically assess the smart city experiments as they unfold. Among the questions to be discussed are the following: How does India’s engagement with smart cities compare with other international cases? To what extent do projects in India draw on cutting-edge technologies? How can we characterize the governance and politics of India’s engagement with ‘smart urbanism’?

Populismos y neopopulismos en el mundo atlántico (Europa - América latina)
Definiciones y conceptos a la luz de la evolución política de las últimas décadas
Actualmente estamos viendo como en una gran parte del mundo se está produciendo la aparición de nuevas formas políticas que, a falta de un mejor concepto, se denominan «populismos» o «neopulismos». Al tomarse como ejemplos la elección de Donald Trump en Estados Unidos o Jair Bolsonaro en Brasil, así como los regímenes de Vladimir Putin, Victor Orban, la Liga Norte y el Movimiento de las Cinco Estrellas, se puede observar como esta evolución ha sufrido una deformación patológica de una forma política que previamente habría existido en una forma «originalmente pura»: la democracia liberal. En este contexto, en el que los conceptos sólo se utilizan para alimentar la invectiva, nos parece importante reunir a investigadores de diferentes disciplinas y procedencias para favorecer los análisis comparativos o los intercambios que promuevan las perspectivas comparativas.

Writing the city [into the urban]
In the aftermath of the May 1968 uprising in Paris, Henri Lefebvre published in 1970 his classic treatise La Révolution Urbaine where he pointedly placed the urban in the centre of this revolution, identifying a theoretical need for the concept of the urban as a planetary possibility, one he considered more appropriate than a redundant notion of the city as a social scientific object. This workshop is a step in this direction where, coming 50 years after the backlash of ’68, this event aims to establish a conversation between the city and the urban by drawing on the notion of "ethnographic theorisation" where the theoretical potential of the urban can be harnessed from ethnographic insights of the city. It explores contingent ways in which the city can be written into the urban through manoeuvres that engage with the process of writing the city across disciplines from literary cultures to urban studies

Los soportes de la protesta feminista en España (años 1960-1990)
Estrategias de creación y de difusión en tiempos de reconfiguración política
Esta jornada pretende ofrecer un espacio para interrogarse colectivamente sobre los diferentes « soportes » materiales, duraderos o efímeros, que fueron movilizados desde distintas esferas para cuestionar el orden de género así como sobre su capacidad para generar discursos feministas. Enfocada en un periodo que corre desde el final de los años sesenta hasta el principio de los noventa, también pretende cuestionar la cronología tradicional del movimiento feminista en España. Nos centraremos especialmente en las artes visuales (fotografía, cómic, cine y performance) así como en los espacios de expresión alternativos que se van gestando con el final de la dictadura, durante la transición y en el postfranquismo (radios libres, poesía lesbiana) cuya contribución al desarrollo de un discurso feminista crítico aún ha sido poco estudiada.

A un anno dall’inizio del programma di ricerca Lettres d’artiste, questo seminario si propone di fare il punto sulle ricerche in corso nel quadro del programma, analizzando i primi risultati e affrontando le questioni metodologiche ancora aperte circa il censimento, la schedatura, il trattamento informatico e l’analisi degli epistolari artistici tra Sette e Ottocento.

À l'occasion du cinquième anniversaire de l'ouverture aux chercheurs des séries consultables à l'Archivio della Penitenzieria Apostolica, une journée d'étude se tiendra le mardi 22 novembre 2016 au Palais de la Chancellerie, avec le patronage de l’École française de Rome et du Deutsches Historisches Institut in Rom. Cette initiative a pour double objectif de dresser un bilan de ces cinq premières années et de suggérer des pistes de recherche pour l'avenir.

Échelles de l'alimentation : une perspective asiatique
The international conference “Scales of the Alimentation: an Asian Perspective” aims at bringing together the French and international scholars of Asia in order to promote a global approach to Asia and to bring together different research institutions based in Europe, therefore to develop the exchanges between different international scholars of Asian societies and experts related to the themes of the food. Our objective is to deliver in-depth analysis and innovative methods arising from research in social and human sciences. We aim to better understand economic, political, institutional, cultural, technological and organizational dynamics of past and present dietary practices in Asia. In particular, we will focus on how the state of food practices and their knowledge is interwoven with other social and technological developments, that are the legacies of expanding and shrinking empires and the mass industrialization.

This conference addresses the gap between the research culture with which Digital Humanists are equipped via their disciplinary backgrounds and the research culture they foster in this field. Why does experimentation play a crucial role in Digital Humanities? How does it contribute to define the relationship between method and research questions? Can we identify barriers which currently prevent Digital Humanities from developing their full potential, leaving little room for iteration, comparison or failure? The conference itself is conceived as an experimental set-up with labs, data experiments and round tables.

Old Ideals, New Realities
Le paternalisme a longtemps souffert d'une très mauvaise réputation. Marqueur d'une hiérarchie sociale, morale ou politique devenue insupportable, il semblait avoir définitivement disparu (au moins dans ses formes instutionnelles) de nos sociétés libérales et démocratiques. Depuis une dizaine d'années, cependant, le monde universitaire (mais aussi politique) se passionne à nouveau pour sa dernière réincarnation, le paternalisme libertarian ou le « coup de pouce » (Nudges) défendu par l'économiste Richard Thaler et le jursite Cass Sunstein. L'objet de cette journée d'étude interdisciplinaire est de discuter de cette nouvelle légitimité et de s'interroger sur les évolutions théoriques ou sociétales qui pourraient expliquer cette évolution des modes de pensée.

Polices et ordre public en France et en Angleterre (1750-1850)
Les perspectives de l’historiographie contemporaine
Traditional historiography has often opposed the French police model to its English counterpart. However, for twenty years, many researchers relativized the differences of these models and focused more on the interactions between cultures of social control. Recent studies have shown the limits of approaches focused on the only national police models as well as the importance of the circulation of police knowledge and technics in the late 18th century and early 19th century. Everywhere in Europe, this period is marked by the will to reform and by reflections on the procedures for the exercise of the police. Through a panel of international researchers, the conference aims to investigate beyond the national perspective by questioning the permanence and changes in police practices on both sides of the Channel. We will ultimately highlight the major trends of contemporary historiography and identify new paths of work.

La santé des familles monoparentales au Royaume-Uni
Du Black Report au rapport Marmot (1990-2010)
La durée de vie des Anglais a augmenté mais les disparités sanitaires se sont accentuées dans le même temps (Marmot, 2010). L’objectif de la journée d’études permettra de lever le voile sur ces phénomènes et de les analyser au regard d’enquêtes qualitatives et quantitatives par exemple. Il s’agira d’étudier les réalités de la vie quotidienne de ces parents, les inégalités sociales et géographiques en matière de santé, de comprendre les mécanismes et d’envisager les enjeux sanitaires sur les futures générations tout en sachant que la responsabilité de la santé publique est transférée du National Health Service aux collectivités locales, selon les propositions du gouvernement de coalition.

Dette, démocratie, citoyenneté. Histoire politique des dettes publiques
Europe, États-Unis, fin XVIIIe-début XXIe siècle
Sous forme d'atelier, cette journée d'études explore, en croisant les approches, la dette publique comme lieu du débat et du conflit politiques en Europe et aux États-Unis depuis la fin du XVIIIe siècle. En rassemblant des études de cas sur ce nœud entre la politique (notamment dans sa dimension sociale) et l'endettement de l'État, elle propose de réinterroger certaines notions centrales à notre compréhension du fonctionnement politique du monde contemporain, et tout particulièrement la souveraineté, la citoyenneté, la démocratie et la solidarité.

Alternative Approaches to Urban Regeneration
Les organisateurs de cette journée d’étude s'intéressent aux initiatives visant à introduire des projets innovants dans les villes, en particulier les villes ayant subi des transformations radicales ces vingt dernières années. Nous nous intéressons à des situations où les approches traditionnelles sont influencées par des stratégies nouvelles initiées par des groupes de pression composés d’architectes/designers, de groupes d’habitants ou des gouvernements locaux (municipalités ou autre). Cette journée d’étude souhaite explorer la question du recours à l’expertise des habitants ou des spécialistes du terrain dans le domaine de la rénovation urbaine : cette expertise est-elle intégrée dans des projets ? Comment ? Peut-elle servir à répondre au phénomène accru de fragmentation urbaine ?

Britanniques et américains dans les projets transnationaux, 1830-1914
L'anglo-saxonnisme et l'anglobalisation en question
Les relations anglo-américaines sont abordées le plus souvent dans le cadre de l’histoire des relations internationales et de la diplomatie. Nous proposons de les étudier plutôt à travers l’histoire de projets internationaux, qu’ils relèvent du commerce et des affaires ou qu’ils poursuivent des objectifs politiques ou réformateurs au sens large. Le but de la journée d’études est de préciser dans quelles circonstances britanniques et américains évoquent leur histoire et leurs traditions communes, ou à l’inverse mettent l’accent sur ce qui les différencie. D’une manière plus générale, il s’agit d’enrichir la réflexion sur les pratique et les cultures de « l’anglo-saxonisme » au XIXe siècle.
