  This issue of Arabian Humanities proposes to offer a multidisciplinary overview of the Sultanate of Oman contemporary period by bringing together old and recent works. It will focus as much on its history as on the major social and cultural changes that have taken place in its society. The aim is to explore the different aspects that can be observed today and which contribute to a better understanding of this country over time.

  Violence and environmental crisis

  Violence: An international journal

  Violence: An international journal is launching a call for papers on the theme “Violence and environmental crisis”. Can we speak about violence when describing biodiversity loss, the destruction of natural sanctuaries like Amazonia and the Great Barrier Reef, or when observing the spillage of illegally polluting wastes? How long is the chain of violence related to environmental crisis? And who are the perpetrators and the victims of such violence? In which way can we speak about violence, and can this violence be legitimated or condemned? All this raises theoretical, normative, linguistic and empirical questions to be discussed in the articles fostered by this call.

  Governing by Prediction?

  Models, data and algorithms in and for governance

  Computation, be it based on statistical modeling or newest techniques of predictive analytics, holds the promise to be able to anticipate and act infallibly on futures and uncertain situations more generally. That the future is an object of governmental knowledge and action is nothing new though. What is the characteristic of today’s relationship with futures in policy making and action? To what extent do the means of computation, from statistical models to learning algorithms employed in predictive analytics change this relationship, and the collective capacity and legitimacy to engage with future, uncertain situations? How do technologies of prediction change policies? Who predicts, how, and with what effects on decisions and administration and on their politics? More generally, how do ways of predicting institutionalize, fail to do so or change?

Cet événement réunira chercheurs, doctorants, professeurs et membres des différents corps d’armée engagés dans les programmes de pacification et de résolution des conflits au Nigéria. / From March 7-9, 2012, IFRA-Nigeria will participate to the sixth Annual Conference and General Assembly of the Society for Peace Studies and Practice (SPSP), organized at Jaji (Kaduna State, Nigeria) in collaboration with the Nigeria Army Peacekeeping Centre. Scholars, professors, PhD students and members of security agencies involved in conflict resolution in Nigeria will be part of this event.
