On both sides of the border: Muslims in Garb al-Andalus and Portugal during the Middle Ages

Hamsa: Journal of Judaic and Islamic Studies – Monographic issue, #12 (2026)

In recent years, there has been a resurgence of Islamic studies in Portuguese lands. Archaeological campaigns and documentation-based research have brought to light valueable information about the Andalusian occupation in this area and the Muslim permanence under Christian rule, both as slaves and as mouros forros. The aim of this monographic issue is to serve as a compilation and new impetus for this research into the Muslim presence in Portuguese lands, both under the sphere of Andalusian influence (Garb al-Andalus) and under Christian rule (Portugal).

Characterising the field of ‘postcolonial’ studies

This workshop is part of a multidisciplinary international project which aims to create a digital resource portal to assemble the data (documents, publications, works) that make up this field. However, the first difficulty encountered concerns the characterization of the domain of knowledge of these studies, its extent, its limits and the definition of the structuring concepts that constitute it. Compared with other fields of study, the field of postcolonial studies is characterised by a greater diversity and fluidity, as well as resistance to the more traditional national interpretative models. This is because it lies at the crossroads of history, comparative literature and literary theory, as well as sociology.

History and Memory: Epistemological Reinterpretation of Africa's Past in a Post-Colonial Context

    “Práticas da História” journal

This special issue of Práticas da História is interested in receiving contributions, referring to colonial and post-colonial African contexts. It is important to better understand what is happening in different African countries, at the level of the Academy but also in other spaces where social memory and history confront each other, and how political, ideological, economic and linguistic factors interfere in those situations. In the case of the former Portuguese colonies, which will soon celebrate 50 years of independence, there are additional factors, such as the later end of colonial rule and the delay in historiography about Africa that occurred until recent decades, both in Portugal and in Brazil.

    Afro Literature Conference

Decolonial studies. From theory to practice

Abya Yala, Caribbean, Africa, Europe, Asia

The arrival and emergence of studies, research or reflections claiming to be “decolonial” in Europe or in formerly colonised societies (particularly in Africa) should not be reduced to another anachronistic or nativist intellectual mode seeking to simplify or replay colonial encounters as certain authors or journalists (especially in France) think. If these studies seem recent to the French-speaking reader, and more particularly to the French reader, it should be pointed out that they stem from a Latin-American intellectual critical tradition (dialoguing with several intellectual streams such as the theory of dependence, liberation theology, studies on the world-system) and that several publications by Latin-American or Latin-American researchers have been describing them for several decades.

The politics and geopolitics of translation

The multilingual circulation of knowledge and transnational histories of geography

In the last fifty years, the field of the history of geography has moved from an approach dominated by National Schools to an attention to the circulation of knowledge in its multiple scales. The history of science and of geography have in the last decades incorporated concepts such as transit, networks, mobilities, the transnational, circulation, centre of calculation, spaces of knowledge, geographies of science, spatial mobility of knowledge, geographies of reading and geographies of the book. More recently, a turn has emerged towards considering the dynamics and necessities of decolonizing the history of geography. This work is turning the field of the history of geography into one of the most dynamic areas of the discipline. Yet we suggest that questions of language and translation have remained under-determined in this new field. Translation and writing have not received the same attention as, for instance, departmental histories, sites of museums, laboratories, botanic gardens, and scientific societies, for example. We suggest, therefore, that new perspectives opened up by translation studies can open new windows on the history of geography.

Thinking the Latin American right wings

    IVth International Congress

The IVth International Congress Thinking the Latin American right wings follows the three previous ones held in France (2014), Argentina (2016) and Brazil (2018), which have permitted the constitution of a community of researchers working on Latin American right-wings. Several specialists from different countries and disciplines have joined in this network, in order to promote projects and studies on this theme, and stimulated the development of new issues related to this political family. The use of various methodologies such as the analysis of political traditions and cultures, representations and imaginaries, identities, networks, sensitivities and memories have made it possible to consolidate a field of study that has become relevant to understand current Latin American political scene.

Power and media, media power Insights on the Americas

    Insights on the Americas

For its 11th issue, RITA proposes to interrogate the links between power and media in the Americas. Several areas of debate can be suggested, although they should not be considered as exclusive. Articles making a critical analysis of official media as well as opposition media, in varied historical and geographical contexts, will of course be welcome. Other articles may deal with the treatment of popular movements by the media. Critical reflections on the relationship between media and economic power are also encouraged. The Thema section can also include analysis of the current diversification of information media by focusing, for instance, on the emergence of “alternative” media on the Internet, or on the power of fake news over the construction of collective representations.

    Refolution: old and new paradigms

Highlighting the 500-year anniversary of the Protestant Reformation allows us to recollect a cultural, intellectual and political revolution that sprang from it. It is indisputable that the Reform gave rise to one of the most decisive events in European history and the world at large, having thoroughly influenced the theological, historical, mental and political perceptions of western culture.

African Socialism | Socialism in Africa

It is high time to give Africa its rightful place in the global historiography of socialism and to socialism its right in the History of Africa. Historians of socialism systematically forget Africa. Yet many African states professed “African” or scientific socialism, many African political actors used the theoretical toolbox drawn from the Marxist tradition. It offered support for the political advancement of colonial populations and the building of post-colonial States. The USSR, China, Cuba, offered ready-to-use models. Some states even tried to invent the ir own forms of African socialism, adapted to the specific conditions of Africa and true to its theoretical roots.

Discrepancies: the life and work of José Rodrigues Miguéis

    Purity and Impurity

Hamsa. Journal of Judaic and Islamic Studies, nº 2

“Purity” and “Impurity” establish themselves as structural categories in both Islam and Judaism, embracing dimensions as diverse as the body, food, clothing and even space itself. The 2nd issue of the journal Hamsa will be devoted to this wide-ranging theme, seeking to obtain diachronic historical perspectives. To this effect, we aim to promote the analysis of interfaith relationships, in those instances where purity and impurity are projected in contacts with the Other. Those dimensions concern not only the minorities, but also affect Christianitas itself, through interiorization of these concepts and their application to minority communities (as is the case, for example, with limpeza de sangue - “cleanliness of blood”).

Education, ethics and politics in contemporary times
