Contemporary Issues in Societies and Businesses in the Americas

L’objectif de cette rencontre est d’analyser l’interculturalité, la diversité et l’nclusion tant dans les sociétés que dans les entreprises de différents pays du continent américain. Il s’agit d’une activité qui comprendra des communications sur des pays tels que les États-Unis, Haïti, la Jamaïque, le Mexique, le Costa Rica, l’Équateur et l’Argentine. Outre le questionnement sur ces nouvelles et possibles instances inclusives, les différences culturelles, sociales et de genre ainsi que les transformations de la société dans de nombreux pays, ont conduit à une réflexion et à des propositions sur la possibilité de construire de nouvelles citoyennetés inclusives et diverses.

“Community Healthcare” in the Americas: (dis)continuities and reappropriations

Community health, which refers to a set of practices and intervention models grounded in social participation and a promotional-preventive approach, began to emerge during the 1960s as an alternative way of delivering healthcare. The American continent was one of the incubators of this approach, drawing on liberation theology and popular education movements in Latin America, the Free Clinics and the Neighborhood Health Clinics in the United States, and the interaction between popular movements and the State during Quebec’s Quiet Revolution. This issue of the journal IdeAs proposes a continental approach to community health.

Surrealism and the Americas: new historiographical perspectives

Thematic workshop of the bi-annual Congress of the Institut des Amériques

As we celebrate the one-hundredth anniversary of the first Surrealist Manifesto (1924), it is in fact appropriate to revisit this long historiographical tradition that considers this collective adventure as an exclusively French (if not Parisian) one, of the interwar period, centered around the charismatic figure of André Breton. By example of the Americas, we wish to propose a new theoretical definition of the movement in favour of its specific variations and manifestations in order to better question the very notions of centre, periphery, heritage or descendance and, in this way, bring to light the new actors of global Surrealism.

Lors de cette journée d’étude, nous nous intéresserons à trois types de manifestations : les spontanées suite à des événements inattendus et souvent violents (grèves, soulèvements, émeutes, etc.) ; les officielles (commémorations de dates anniversaires telles que la fête du travail, les fêtes nationales, etc.) ; les manifestations politiques et sociales liées à des combats de longue haleine (les Marches des Fiertés, les luttes pour les droits des femmes ou contre le racisme, la défense de l’IVG, les combats écologiques liés au réchauffement climatique, etc.).

Borders in the Americas – Integration, Security and Migrations

In the aftermath of the collapse of the Soviet Union, many analysts and experts argued that the world had reached the “end of history” [Fukuyama, 1992] and that regional and local organizations and free trade agreements (among which the European Union appeared to be a model of integration) signaled the emergence of a world without borders. Yet, thirty years later, the reality seems to be altogether different. Today, it is clear that “borders are back”. Whether these borders are challenged, violated, transcended, consolidated, or integrated, they remain necessarily at the heart of the political debate. This symposium will focus on a specific geographic area: the Americas.

Ce colloque se propose d’étudier l’état actuel, des années 1970 à nos jours, des questionnements sur l’américanité, saisie dans un sens à la fois local, national et transcontinental. Le continent américain a été et reste un pôle attractif pour des populations/des individus en quête d’un monde nouveau et meilleur, qu’il a acceptés et refoulés tout au long de son histoire. Comment l’américanité, réelle ou mythique, accueillante ou exclusive, opère-t-elle en tant que critère d’une recherche identitaire dans la réélaboration constante et l’évolution des visions culturelles de l’Amérique du nord et de l’Amérique latine ?

The Long Breath…

Dans le prolongement des travaux du séminaire « Pop-Poésie... ou Poésie » (FRAMESPA / CAS), le colloque « De largo aliento... / The Long reath... / Le souffle long... » (Toulouse, 14, 15 et 16 mars 2013) invite poètes, critiques, traducteurs et éditeurs à réfléchir sur la forme contemporaine du « poème long », dans la tradition américaine hispanophone, anglophone ou francophone. Car, même si cette poésie aime à jouer sur le mode mineur du fragment, il n’en reste pas moins que les poètes contemporains ont également posé d’autres mesures, plus amples, au long du dernier siècle.

The Classics in the Americas. Reprising and Rewriting Greek and Latin Classics in the American Continent and the Caribbean

While classical intertextuality has been a widely studied subject and a much-discussed topic in the field of European literary theory, there exist, as of yet, only one-off studies regarding its developments in the “New World”. Although works by writers such as Edgar Allan Poe and Jorge Luis Borges have often been analyzed from an intertextuality-oriented perspective, and although several research projects, by focusing on this or that national or regional literature of the Continent, have helped cover sizeable blind spots in literary history, the groundwork has yet to be laid for an overall theoretical approach on the ways in which the Ancient Classics have hitherto been reprised and rewritten in the Americas.
