The critic of automatic reason - stupidity and intelligence in the digitalisation of the world

Ce colloque sera le moment de réfléchir à l’entrelacs entre différentes strates problématiques de la « numérisation du monde », sans négliger un élément central : toutes ces intelligences ont toujours besoin d’exister d’une manière ancrée, ce qui nous conduit à mettre en évidence le concept de territoire. Celui-ci ne sera pas entendu au sens simplement physique, mais aussi écologique, administratif, politique, éthique et existentiel, de l’ordre du milieu ou du transindividuel. L'évènement sera l'occasion d’explorer ces nouveaux territoires et leurs intelligences (à l’aide des outils de l’architecture, de l’urbanisme et du design) pour aller au-delà des smart territories, au sens plat et « bête » de déploiement massif de toutes sortes de devices numériques.

L’éloge se définit comme un discours épidictique né d’une vigoureuse admiration, impliquant une instance énonciative, productrice d’un discours évaluatif saturé d’amplification et de valorisation. L’éloquence de l’acte célébratif, éminemment rhétorique, établit ainsi la singularisation et l’élévation d’un objet, produisant un jugement mélioratif de l’objet visé. Omniprésent dans la poésie amoureuse et érotique (les odes et fragments saphiques, le cantique des cantiques biblique, la tradition du ghazal dans la poésie courtoise arabe et perse, les Amours et Odes ronsardiennes, L’union libre d’André Breton, l’hommage à la Femme noire de Léopold Sédar Senghor, The lesbian body de Monique Wittig se lisent comme autant de variantes encomiastiques), l’éloge a traditionnellement servi à chanter le féminin—geste qu’il s’agira d’interroger, tant sur le plan philosophique, énonciatif, rhétorique, genré qu'épistemologique.

16th annual symposium of the International Medieval Society – Paris
For its 16th annual symposium, the International Medieval Society Paris invites scholarly papers on any aspect of time in the Middle Ages. Papers may deal with the experience or exploitation of time, its reckoning or measuring, its inscription, its theorization, or the question of how or why or whether we should demarcate the “Middle Ages.” Papers focusing on historical or cultural material from medieval France or post-Roman Gaul, or on texts written in medieval French or Occitan, are particularly encouraged, but compelling papers on other material will also be considered.

One of the impressive new areas of scientific interest is the science of the brain. New tools and new theoretical approaches have resulted in new insights into how humans get around in the world and understand themselves. But this new science has its roots in broadly philosophical investigations of the mind going back to the classic thinkers from the beginning of modernity. In this conference, we will juxtapose contemporary scientists working on the brain with historians of philosophy and science working on classic figures like Descartes, Hobbes, Locke and Cudworth, among others, to see how the new can illuminate the old, and the old the new.

The Conference "Basic rights, relational ethics and financial constraints" will explore, from a philosophical perspective, the various ways in which basic rights, interpersonal, professional and institutional relations, and financial constraints interact. Given the gap between the generality of basic ethical principles and the norms of practice in various areas of social life, there is usually no direct or obvious way from principles to detailed and effective regulation.

Giovanni Battista Vico (1668–1744) spent most of his professional life as Professor of Rhetoric at the University of Naples. He was trained in jurisprudence, but read widely in Classics, philology, and philosophy, all of which informed his highly original views on history, historiography, and culture. His thought is most fully expressed in his mature work, the Scienza Nuova or The New Science. In his own time, Vico was relatively not so known, but from the nineteenth century onwards his views found a wider audience and today his influence is widespread in the humanities and social sciences. While borrowing our title “The Vico Road” to James Joyce, the conference at the Paris Institute of Advanced Study will examine the current state of the study of the works of Giambattista Vico. We will try to encourage discussion of ideas that can be considered Vichian in nature and that have some affinity with modern and contemporary thought.

Le projet ERC-Starting Grant À chacun son réel, recherche menée sur les notions de réel et de réalité(s) dans l’art des années 1960 à 1989 en France, RFA, RDA et Pologne, organise à Paris, au Centre allemand d’histoire de l’art, une rencontre internationale les 11, 12 et 13 avril 2013 autour de trois ateliers de recherche rassemblant chercheurs confirmés, post-doctorants et doctorants et dont les thèmes de travail seront : Réalité(s), fiction, utopie.
