13th Celtic Conference in Classics
In medieval manuscripts, a classical text is rarely copied alone. It is most often accompanied by paratextual elements that have been intentionally added to the text. Such elements come in a wide variety of formats: explanatory or complementary texts (accessus, prologues, vitae, commentaries, glosses, glossaries, etc.) images (illumination, diagrams, drawings, etc.), or elements structuring the manuscript, the text or the page (index, table of chapters, titles, division into books, chapters or paragraphs, sections, etc.). They can be transcribed at the beginning, the end, or next to the classical text, within its writing frame or in its margins.

Estimating, Locating, and Comparing Mental Disorders in the Second Part of the Twentieth Century
Psychiatric Epidemiology in Historical Perspective
Psychiatric epidemiology – the study of the distribution of mental disorders within a population – emerged on the scientific scene during the second half of the 20th century. However, unlike the fields of psychiatry, psychology, and psychoanalysis, psychiatric epidemiology has yet to be studied by historians, largely due to the fact that it was only professionalized much later. Several factors can explain the field’s relative “invisibility”: the still recent standardization of its methods, the diversity of local scientific traditions, nations’ varying public health policies, the range of different sites for observation (rural or urban studies, comparisons between neighbouring communities, insular populations, cohorts) as well as the varieties of interdisciplinary studies implemented within the scientific community (medicine, psychology, sociology, anthropology, biostatistics). These elements highlight the diversity of potential sources, and thus necessarily bring forward the question: how should one go about writing a history of this largely unrecognized field?

Sharing meals. Social aspects of eating and cooking together
Eating involves many other dimensions than just ingesting food. It is especially a social act, as it involves the social position and relationships of the individual in all of the included practices: supplying, cooking, dressing, ordering, ingesting, clearing, washing-up, managing left-overs, etc. This symposium offers to explore, with a social science approach, the different dimensions associated with sharing meals (non exhaustive): Cultural differences in the manners of sharing meals; Specificity of the sharing of cooking times regarding the sharing of meal times; Use of commensality as a social action mean; Symbolic representation of the benefits of sharing meals (psychological, physiological, social); Comparison of meals regarding other eating times (snacking); Political/Diplomatic use of meals; Organization, perception and role of meals in institutions (school canteens, hospital, nursing homes, prisons…).

4e Colloque International de Philosophie Economique
Collective life is structured by norms. Even though such norms manifest as regularities for those who observe them, they also constitute rules to follow or ideals to mimic. May these norms be social, moral, or legal, they organize practices and orient judgments, especially in the economic sphere. Consequently, they constitute one of the first objects of study for both economics and philosophy, and more broadly for the social sciences.

Old Ideals, New Realities

The Institute for Transcultural and Transtextual Studies (IETT) is organising a multi-disciplinary conference on old age, interpreted as a transitional period during which individuals have to face specific issues. The conference aims to explore three major themes. The first one will lead us to address a series of questions related to aesthetic norms and social models. The second theme will focus on forms of mental and physical degeneration and will encourage us to examine the consequences of age-related disability, segregation, and exclusion. The third issue is based on the related questions of memory and transmission. It will allow us to reflect upon the transmission of traditions and on relationships within the family, partly based on authority, and/or on inherited collective values.
