French Historical Studies (Special Issue)

L’histoire de la musique a généralement été étudiée comme une catégorie à part. Elle n’a pas suscité le même intérêt parmi les historien(ne)s que d’autres objets culturels tels que les films ou la littérature. L’historiographie la plus récente éclaire la place de la musique dans la société française et suggère qu’il reste encore beaucoup à faire pour constituer un ensemble de connaissances historiques sur son rôle dans l’histoire. Ce numéro spécial de FHS voudrait faire le bilan de nos savoirs et les orienter vers des pistes de recherche nouvelles. Qu’est-ce que la production et la consommation de la musique nous disent de la nature évolutive de l’identité française et des relations entre ses divers constituants ?

Las memorias y tradiciones en el Caribe y en América latina siempre han sido objeto de debates acalorados, siempre han desatado convulsiones, han sido afectadas por procesos de amnesia y asimilación, influenciados directamente por el colonialismo, el positivismo, el imperialismo, la globalización, el neocolonialismo. 2020, se presenta como un año crucial para los países occidentales u occidentalizados, y nos ofrece la posibilidad de cuestionar el modelo capitalista, o el aporte de la occidentalización a la edificación social de los pueblos, es decir, preguntarse si es el único sistema económico, el único y obligado modelo político, que permite contemplar el progreso, la evolución y el modernismo en nuestras regiones.

Singing the Past

Music and the Politics of Memory

This international conference intends to investigate how songs can constitute means to narrate historical events as well as social and political figures. This symposium intends to explore “unofficial” narratives that are clearly distinct from or opposing to political authority. This will allow us to investigate various relations to the past and how those may be performed, often through personal narratives constructing alternative histories. Another central issue is the content of the songs. In other words, what in the songs’ material conveys historical and political meaning? Nevertheless, it should not be studied apart from the music which conveys its social meaning. The choice of musical instruments, forms and aesthetics as well as musical borrowings or quotations highlights symbols that are superposed to and intertwined with textual content in a complex semiotic structure that needs to be unpacked.

Actes de justice, événements publics : les criminels de la seconde guerre mondiale en procès

The conference suggests approaching trials of war crimes and of crimes against humanity, which took place in the aftermath of World War II and its following decades, as specific social events. By including professional and social actors (magistrates and police force, whistle-blowers, witnesses, defendants...) who got involved and shaped audiences of such trials, the conference endeavours to question the notion of publicization. It will cross this perspective with a study of the part played by the media supports in the organization and in the public reception of these trials.

Dans le système de culture mondialisée qui caractérise les sociétés contemporaines, l'organisation d'un colloque international invite à concentrer l’attention sur un cas d’étude, la circulation des diverses formes de culture populaire entre Irlande et États-Unis. L’ancienneté, la constance et de l’intensité des échanges culturels entre les deux nations sont en effet largement antérieurs à la mondialisation culturelle ultra-contemporaine. Cette singularité inscrite dans la longue durée permet de mettre en perspective les phénomènes contemporains tout en les interrogeant.

Journal of Phenomenological and Existential Theory and Culture

Eros plays a central role in Western thought. In the philosophical and spiritual traditions, it usually refers to physical love and desire. Eros is a recurring character in the pre-Socratic cosmogonies, and it is the main impulse of the philosophical quest for truth in Plato’s Phaedrus. This Special Topics issue of PhænEx wishes to give a new impulse to philosophical reflections on this fundamental and ambiguous phenomenon, following an interdisciplinary perspective at the intersection of phenomenology, post-structuralism, and social sciences (psychology, sociology, sexology, anthropology, linguistics, etc.).

IAMCR 2015

The Gender and Communication Section invites submissions for its open session at next year’s IAMCR, held in Montreal, Canada, from 12-16 July 2015. The section seeks research that balances theory and practice, and explores the relationship between gender, media and communication. In recent years sessions have included papers on the Internet, television, film, journalism, magazines, violence, queer theory, media production, reception, advertising, representation, the Global Media Monitoring Project, human rights, discrimination, elections, the body, HIV/AIDS, development, pop culture, virtual identity, social change, and consumption. In keeping with our philosophy of inclusivity, we welcome contributions without regard to empirical, theoretical, disciplinary or philosophical perspectives. The deadline for submission of abstracts is 9 February 2015.

La 15^e conférence internationale sur les migrations se tiendra du 18 au 20 juin 2015 à Dudelange au Luxembourg. Portée par un réseau d'institution germanophone, cette conférence accepte les communications en anglais et en allemand. La thématique retenue cette année porte sur « Migration et genre » et cherchera à faire le point sur la recherche sur les rapports de sexe et de genre dans les migrations.
