  Animal ethics in Asian literature

  Special issue of "Impressions d'Extrême-Orient" (IDEO)

  Human beings, as well as animals, feel pain…and are therefore sensitive and capable of empathy. The special issue of Impressions d’Extrême-Orient aims to address the issue of animal ethics in Asian literature. Through articles and/or translations of philosophical, historical, spiritual, religious and literary works, this issue endeavours to figure out if ancient and contemporary Asian authors do invite us to think about animal ethics, and if they have imagined another form of human-animal relationship that would not be based on the domination and oppression of other species.

  Performance and literature in South Asia 2

  Theories and the uses of emotions

  La première journée d’étude du projet DELI sur la performance de la littérature, tenue le 15 décembre 2016, a réuni des chercheurs de différentes disciplines et aires linguistiques autour de thématiques liées aux usages politiques de la performance en Asie du Sud. Les pistes de réflexion interdisciplinaires que cette première journée a permis d’ouvrir ont notamment fait apparaître l’importance des liens entre émotion, performance et mobilisation politique, du Telangana jusqu’au Sindh. Dans le prolongement de cette première journée, nous nous proposons de poursuivre la réflexion sur la place et la fonction des émotions dans la performance littéraire en Asie du Sud, tant au niveau théorique que pratique.

  Romain Rolland and India: a fruitful exchange

  Dès ses années de formation à l’École normale supérieure, Rolland s’intéresse aux religions d’Asie que lui fait découvrir le romantisme français et allemand. Le thème de l’Orient est d’ailleurs plusieurs fois abordé dans Jean-Christophe. Très impliqué, après la guerre, dans le débat Orient-Occident, Rolland s’intéresse à  Mohandas K. Gandhi et son satyagraha comme moyen non-violent de libération des peuples.

  History of Science, History of Text

  The seminar "History of Science, History of Text" will mainly explore textual problems related to the ERC Project SAW – "Mathematical Sciences in the Ancient World". The seminar will address the following issues regarding scientific sources: how textual sources bear witness to the social groups that produced them; How textual sources testify to knowledge; history of compilations  How actors structure their texts and knowledge into parts; how textual sources reflect the material environment in which they were produced.
