Science and madness, extravagance, exception

Alchemists, magicians, outlaw scientists in italian culture

This volume aims at exploring the ways of science as excess and madness (see Zangrandi 2011, 2017; Garlaschelli and Carrer 2017) or, in less tragic forms, as an opportunity to explore new paths of knowledge. Another goal is to shed light on the character’s evolution, tracing the roots of a literary and cultural trope that, since the 20^th century, takes on multiple configurations and plays manifold functions. Looking back to the past, this theme can be traced in the Romanticism’s rejection of the exact science and in the particular declination proposed by Leopardi in his Operette morali, or even in the disquieting image of the alchemist of the Renaissance, whose superior knowledge of natural phenomena turns into the extreme and a punishable hybris.

Intersections. New perspectives for public humanities

HFC-INT 2020

The international network Humanities for Change, in accordance with the interdisciplinary spirit and the contaminatory approach that characterize its activities, intends to organize a day of study on the theme of public humanities. The meeting aims to stimulate some reflections coming from different fields of knowledge and to encourage the dialogue between researchers on the possibilities of the humanities to escape from academic circles. In this sense, the main object of study is the analysis of methodologies and tools related to knowledge dissemination practices for historical, artistic and philological-literary disciplines. Particular attention will also be given to new professional figures connected to the degree courses of the humanities faculties (such as the 'public historian') and to the interactions of these professional figures with the new media of communication and mass dissemination.

Work, between action and sufferance

Les hommes n’ont jamais cessé de montrer une profonde ambivalence à l’égard du travail, activité tantôt valorisée, tantôt dévalorisée, tantôt rangée du côté de l’action voire de la création, tantôt du côté de l’infortune et de la nécessité, tantôt considérée comme une souffrance, une punition ou une calamité, tantôt comme un moyen de salut, de libération, d’accès à la sphère éthique et à la reconnaissance. Du fond de l’âge grec, depuis Hésiode et au-delà, comme dans la tradition biblique, nous retrouvons trace de semblable ambivalence, bipolarité inscrite au cœur même de l’expérience du travail. Bien sûr, les traditions et les cultures accusent des traits qui les distinguent voire les opposent quant à l’importance accordée à chacune de ces polarités constitutives de la problématique du travail, en lien avec leur spiritualité religieuse et leur idéologie sociale et politique. Mais quelles que soient ces différences d’approches et d’accents, force est de constater qu’elles ne sont pas parvenues à effacer complètement la dimension alter du travail qu’elles s’efforcent parfois de conjurer, et à convaincre ce faisant de l’unidimensionnalité principielle (positive ou négative, morale ou sociale) du travail humain. Ces journées d’étude seront l’occasion de travailler quelques grandes lignes de cette antinomie, de cette bipolarité de l’agir et du pâtir qui anime la problématique du travail.

In the shadow of the masters: "secondary" artists in peinture, sculpture and architecture (12th-19th century)

The essential locus of the workshop has to be enquired into. How is a workshop organized? Which role is given to each of its members? From preparing colours to realising some parts of the painting, from building a mould to pouring liquid bronze into this casting mould, or from drawing a project to managing a work site, which evolution and which autonomy can students benefit from regarding their masters? Vasari has revealed a progressive vision of Art History, which still prevails in the discipline: students are inevitably ending up overstepping their master (Michelangelo and Ghirlandaio) or outshining their father (Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Pietro Bernini in the 17^th century). But what about those who were not taken on and those who remained unskilled workers in their lifetime? Was their role really secondary? The ways and means of these artists’ dependence and emancipation regarding their masters, their model, or their technique has to be addressed.

Rebuilding / Restoring Rome

The Renewal of Buildings and Spaces as Urban Policy, from Antiquity to the Present

Everywhere in Rome, monuments are covered with ancient or modern inscriptions that not only contain the name of the original builder but also commemorate their restoration. Popes from the Quattrocento and Cinquecento who acted as urban planners, such as Sixtus IV, presented themselves as ‘restorers’, even when they were actually modernising the City. This phenomenon is not restricted to the Renaissance period: many Roman emperors already claimed to be rebuilders, such as Augustus who repaired all the damaged temples of Rome according to the Res Gestae, or Septimius Severus who was called Restitutor Vrbis on his coinage. Rome thus seems to be a city that constantly needs to be restored, rebuilt, born again. This conference aims to investigate how the notions of restoration and rebuilding were a driving force of Rome’s urban transformation throughout its history, from Antiquity to the 21^st century, as well as a political program put forward by the authorities and an ideal more or less shared by the different key actors of the city.

The worship of the Virgin Mary - historical research and disclosure

Ces deux journées de séminaire international proposent d'abord d'explorer « temps, expression, diffusion et mutations de la dévotion mariale » de la première modernité aux débuts de l'époque contemporaine à partir de la présentation du Dictionnaire historique de la Vierge Marie dirigé par Fabienne Henryot et Philippe Martin (Perrin, 2017) en réunissant des historiens français et italiens spécialistes d'histoire religieuse, d'histoire du livre, et de l'art dans un débat scientifique ouvert au regard de l'anthropologue et à celui de jeunes chercheurs. La rencontre donne aussi l'occasion d'appréhender matériellement son sujet par des visites de lieux représentatifs de la piété mariale napolitaine, mais aussi de considérer la dimension divulgative de la recherche historique par l'approche cinématographique que le film L'apparition de Xavier Giannoli (France, février 2018) autorise.

Models and Transformations, from Confessional States to Religious Freedom

This conference will explore the international legal agreements signed between the Holy See and individual states, which often but not always took the form of concordats and similar conventions. Its central focus will be to examine these conventions in light of diplomatic practices, as well as in relation to the political and religious dynamics of the nineteenth through the twenty-first centuries, notably the principles and requirements that comprised modernity. This entails assessing the historical evolution of the typology, method, content, scope, and spaces concerned.

Contemporary song of Langue d'Oc and Italy. Roots, dialect and transnational dynamics

Ces dernières décennies ont vu une diversification notable de la scène musicale occitane. La chanson d'oc s'est renouvelée dans les échanges avec des musiciens issus d'autres sphères culturelles, souvent méditerranéennes, mais pas seulement. L'étude de ces dynamiques transnationales permet de comprendre comment la chanson dialectale pose des questions essentielles : rapport entre dimensions locales, nationales et mondialisation, enracinement et multiculturalisme, face à face entre cultures dominantes et civilisations minorées. Nous consacrerons une journée aux liens entre la chanson d'oc et l'Italie. Nous étudierons les échanges entre la chanson d'oc et la culture italienne conçue comme une mosaïque de cultures régionales, dans une dynamique à double sens, sans limite dans le temps (héritage culturel lointain, choix d'instruments ancrés dans une pratique musicale ancestrale, influences récentes).

Les objets dans la littérature italienne contemporaine

Depuis toujours partie intégrante des procès de représentations, les objets ont joué un rôle central dans la littérature du dernier siècle, d’un point de vue à la fois structurel et symbolique. L’objectualité, ou comme Calvino le disait au début des années soixante « la mer de l'objectivité », a fini par engloutir l’individualité, en dissolvant la conscience dans la prolifération de la présence matérielle. Le colloque vise à explorer le rôle des objets dans la littérature italienne de la deuxième moitié du XX^e siècle, en arrivant jusqu’aux premières années du XXI^e. L’étude des objets constitue un moyen privilégié pour analyser le potentiel expressif d’œuvres contemporaines ; elle représente une stratégie d’interprétation adaptée à dévoiler, à travers la « fonction objectale », la signification de nombreuses expériences narratives et poétiques.

This session aims to address, from a historical perspective, the relation between, on one side, architecture and the related disciplines, and on the other side, agriculture and rurality at large. We welcome proposals specifically mapping case studies concerned with large-scale agricultural development and/or colonization schemes conceived and (but not necessarily) implemented in Europe and beyond during modern times (late 18th-20th century), strongly connected to nation- and State-building processes, and to the modernization of the countryside. We are particularly interested in those examples which aimed to “make the difference” in both scale and numbers, entailing radical reshaping of previously uninhabited or sparsely populated areas into new, planned, “total” rural landscapes.
