The digitalisation of factums of the Court of Appeal of Riom
Promoting an original historical source
La Bibliothèque Clermont Université (BCU) vient d’achever la numérisation d’un millier de mémoires judiciaires conservés par la Cour d’Appel de Riom et concernant des affaires jugées en Auvergne aux XVIIIe et XIXe siècles. Ces mémoires, généralement dénommés « factums », constituent une source inépuisable non seulement pour l’histoire du droit, mais aussi pour l’histoire sociale, économique ou locale. Cette journée d’étude, où interviendront des enseignants, des chercheurs, des bibliothécaires, démontrera l’intérêt des factums numérisés en Auvergne et restituera le travail de mise en valeur réalisé depuis quatre ans. Elle s’adresse en particulier aux universitaires.

The financing of transport infrastructures 17th-early 19th centuries
La question du financement des infrastructures de transport figure au cœur des politiques actuelles de développement local et d’emploi. Ces enjeux financiers, qui sont loin d’être nouveaux, n’ont pourtant guère retenu l’attention des historiens, notamment pour la période antérieure à l’aménagement des chemins de fer. Or à partir de la seconde moitié du XVIIe siècle, les impératifs logistiques dans une Europe périodiquement en guerre, la croissance des échanges et les politiques d’embellissement urbain commandent un accroissement des dépenses pour la construction et l’entretien des infrastructures de transport (routes, rues, voies d’eau, ports de mer).

Industrial hazards and accidents (late 17th – late 19th century)
Technological accidents question our industrial society; they are an inherent part of the “risk society” concept that scientists, sociologists, geographers and anthropologists have popularised since the eighties. However, in order to step back and take a longer term view, historicization of the concept is necessary. Although historians have also begun to examine this question, they have focused primarily on the most contemporary period during which spectacular accidents have occurred and have sometimes led to disasters. But industrial (or artisanal or mining) accidents occurred throughout the earlier economic development process in Europe. They went hand in hand with the emergence of the industrial society that they helped to create.

Manufacturers and merchants : making and exporting clocks and other luxury goods in the 18th century
Roger Smith is an independent historian who was educated at the University of London. He was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London in 2006. He is chiefly interested in the organisation of the manufacture and sale of clocks, watches and related luxury articles in the eighteenth century, including international aspects like the migration of craftsmen. He has done much research into the Anglo-Swiss watchmaking firm of Vulliamy of London, and is currently working on a major study of James Cox and his competitors in the trade in clocks and watches from Western Europe to Asia. As well as publishing extensively on such topics, he has acted as historical adviser to museums and auction houses, including the loan exhibition SingSong, Treasures from the Forbidden City at the Museum Speelklok, Utrecht in 2010-11.

Pour la troisième année, ce séminaire propose d’étudier l’émergence des risques et accidents industriels en Europe de la fin du XVIIe à la fin du XIXe siècle (principalement en France et en Angleterre). Il s’agit de rassembler des problématiques souvent disjointes (techniques, économiques, juridiques, médicales, urbaines, etc.) dans une compréhension globale de leur leur incidence sur nos sociétés. En tant qu’objet d’étude à part entière, ils sont étudiées dans toutes leurs dimensions : prévention, action, réparation… Il s’agit de suivre la chaîne chronologique, philosophique et logique du risque et de l’accident, pour mieux éclairer la mise en place de notre civilisation industrielle. Le séminaire privilégie ainsi la question de l’économie de l’accident industriel, entendu dans un sens très large, où peuvent être analysés les dialectiques prévention / réparation, régulation par la loi / par le marché, savoirs et expertise / décisions politiques, économie / écologie, ou encore techniques et organisations / responsabilités humaines. -

Dans le cadre des « Rendez-vous de l’histoire de Blois » (18-21 octobre), consacrés cette année aux paysans, le GDR 2912 CRH-EHESS « Histoire des campagnes européennes » et le GDR-I CRH-EHESS « Crises et mutations dans les campagnes européenes » (CRICEC), organisent ou accompagnent un certain nombre de séances, de tables rondes, de colloques et de cafés historiques. -

Between art and industry: The issues of technical training (18th-20th century)
Par-delà les rythmes et voies multiples de l’industrialisation, la question de la formation technique demeure un enjeu fondamental, que l’historiographie est loin d’avoir suffisamment exploré. L’exigence de qualité des produits fournit en particulier, du XVIIIe au XXe siècle, un levier puissant pour la définition et l’organisation de politiques de formation fort variées. Des formations locales cantonnées à l'atelier jusqu’aux grandes écoles d'ingénieurs, la reconnaissance des besoins de formation ne préjuge pas de ses modalités institutionnelles et pédagogiques. La notion de qualité, dont la définition évolutive relève de logiques économiques et juridiques de production et de commercialisation, suppose dès lors d’envisager la pratique artistique comme l’un des fondements de l’innovation industrielle. -

Premières journées d'étude (juin 2011)
Le programme de recherche « histoire des risques et des accidents industriels, France, Angleterre, fin XVIIe – fin XIXe siècle » réunit une équipe d’historiens afin de caractériser la généalogie des risques et accidents industriels durant le moment d’acclimatation industrielle qui s’écoule de la fin du XVIIe à la fin du XIXe siècle. L’objet de ces premières journées d’étude est de réunir les membres du projet pendant deux jours, pour prendre le temps de partager problématiques, hypothèses, méthodes et premiers résultats.
