Living together in the Absurd

Making sense when the world doesn’t make sense

According to Camus, the world we live in is absurd. While this can become manifest to us in nearly any situation, Camus is adamant that the world’s absurdity is not owing to any specific features. Rather, it is intrinsically relational and results from the unresolvable tension of two elements : the unbridgeable hiatus between a reason that seeks understanding and a world that remains strictly irrational. If it is our understanding that opens up the world for us, at the same time, the world irrevocably resists being fully grasped. The absurdity thus creates a human desire for clarity that will never see its fulfilment.

Comment le capitalisme modèle-t-il nos désirs, et comment, en retour, notre désir agit-il sur le fonctionnement du capitalisme ? Le nouvel esprit du capitalisme de Luc Boltanski et Eve Chiapello, mais se caractérise par sa plasticité, sa capacité à intégrer et ingérer la critique, la question se pose. Le capitalisme de notre époque n’est pas tout à fait identique à celui de Marcuse, Deleuze, Guattari et Lyotard, qui lui-même diffère de celui de Marx ou Freud. Par conséquent, il nous faut nous interroger : la relation entre le désir et le capitalisme d’aujourd’hui est-elle la même que celle pensée par tous ces auteurs ?

Thinking from the Dual – Ontology, Theology and the Humanities through the Lens of the “Muthannā”

This international conference explores the philosophical and theological implications of the Arabic grammatical dual (al-muthannā). Situated between the paradigms of unity and multiplicity that have long structured philosophical thought, the dual offers a distinctive relational structure in which two terms are held together without fusion or hierarchy. Taking this linguistic form as a conceptual starting point, the conference investigates the possibility of thinking relation itself as originary. Particular attention will be given to the concept of ʿahd (covenant, pact, commitment) as a relational event in Islamic theology and beyond. Bringing together philosophers, theologians, and scholars from the humanities and social sciences, the conference seeks to open a field of inquiry devoted to the ontological, theological, and anthropological significance of the dual in contemporary thought.

In an article that also serves as a statement of position, historian Serge Gruzinski attempts to answer this question: France is a place where it is possible to seek a new conception of the relationship between Europe and America, far from the reductions that certain intellectual traditions—notably American postcolonial studies—have made of Latin America.

Dans ce colloque, nous analyserons la dimension « encyclopédique » de nombreuses chroniques universelles médiévales, qui dépassent la simple succession chronologique des faits par l’intégration de « digressions » issues de sources historiques, théologiques, exégétiques, poétiques, hagiographiques et scientifiques. Il s’agira d’examiner les modalités de cette intégration de matériaux hétérogènes, d’en comprendre les motivations, d’identifier les bibliothèques mobilisées par les auteurs et d’en analyser les enjeux éditoriaux, notamment au regard des révisions successives d’une œuvre par son auteur et en dialogue avec le reste de sa production.

Les langues d’Afrique dans les péninsules ibérique et italienne : usages, circulations, apprentissages, représentations (XVIe-XVIIe siècles)

Cette journée d’étude propose de considérer le rôle des acteurs (voyageurs, missionnaires, pèlerins, érudits, imprimeurs, théologiens, maîtres de langues, diasporas, interprètes) dans la constitution de savoirs et représentations sur les langues d’Afrique, de l’arabe au kikongo en passant par le kanuri et le guèze, dans les péninsules ibérique et italienne. Il s’agit d’étudier et de comparer les contextes de constitution de ces savoirs linguistiques, que l’intérêt porté sur les langues se fonde sur une forme de curiosité ou qu’il revête un intérêt pratique : religieux, économique ou diplomatique.
