The Multidisciplinary Grid 2020 Conference
The conference is aimed at examining the ‘grid’ as a cross-disciplinary theme with a multiplicity of expressions in terms of definitions, concepts, perceptions, representations, and histories. The ‘grid’ has played a significant role in shaping the spatial imaginaries of a wide range of fields: from Hippodamus of Miletus to the Cartesian revolution in mathematics, from the visual arts to archaeology to 'smart cities' and artificial intelligence. As the 'grid' has become an all-encompassing term, signifying a vast array of infrastructural and communication networks through which contemporary life is mediated and controlled, it is commonly viewed as a quintessential symbol of modernity. The conference strives to explore a new horizon of relationships and fusion of the ‘grids’ in these areas as manifested between humans, between machines, and between humans and machines ‒ bridging philosophical, cultural, pedagogical, technical and ethical issues.

Nouvelles archives numériques au Proche-Orient : le son, l’image, le film et le web
Enjeux du partage des données de terrain au Liban, en Jordanie et en Syrie
Les chercheurs en sciences humaines et sociales qui ont choisi le Proche-Orient comme terrain d'investigation scientifique depuis le XIXe siècle ont constitué des fonds documentaires comprenant tous les types de sources. Chercheur·e·s libanais·es, syrien·nne·s ? Jordannien·ne·s et Français·es ont produit et mobilisé des corpus de notes et carnets de terrain ou de fouilles, photographies, films et enregistrements sonores, sites web... Ces ensembles constituent des collections qui sont susceptibles d'éclairer l'histoire de la région et d'aider à la compréhension du temps présent. Ces collections restent pourtant souvent difficilement accessibles, parfois même inconnues du monde académique et culturel et bien plus encore des différents publics concernés.

What do we picture when we evoke India? For its 20 th annual Workshop, The “Association des jeunes études indiennes” (AJEI) invites young researchers to share their knowledge and to propose a critical approach of the concept of ‘Images’ in the subcontinent: To what extent do images reflect the many realities and representations of India and how does the Indian imagery affect scholarly, artistic and touristic as well as political perceptions, from a western and an Indian point of view? The Workshop is aimed to develop a cross-disciplinary dialogue in social sciences for a better understanding of the multiple roles that Images have been playing from antiquity to nowadays in the perceptions and the foundations of culture and identities in Indian society. The aim is also to open some reflexive discussions on the use and construction of images.

Les motifs littéraires de l’ethnologie
Les sciences humaines et sociales sont nées en se séparant progressivement des belles-lettres. Pourtant, littérature et ethnologie ont parfois suivi des chemins très proches. Elles ont été, à plusieurs reprises, des sources d’inspiration l’une pour l’autre. L’objectif de ce colloque est de réunir des ethnologues, des historiens et des littéraires pour réfléchir aux liens qu’ont entretenus et qu’entretiennent ces deux disciplines en France et au Japon. L’exercice de la comparaison permettra d’ouvrir de nouvelles pistes de réflexion et de mieux comprendre la constitution des disciplines académiques telles qu’on les distingue aujourd’hui.

Il s’inscrit dans les collaborations déjà fructueuses entre les collègues de l’université de Ningbo et les collègues français, en particulier enseignants-chercheurs à l’université d’Angers (UFR ESTHUA « Tourisme et culture »).

Geoarchaeology, defined as the application of geosciences and geographical methods to prehistory, archaeology, and history, is now widely applied to study key subjects such as occupation patterns, territory and site exploitation, palaeoclimatic, palaeoenvironemental, and palaeogeographical changes, as well as anthropogenic impacts and system responses. The multidisciplinary and multiscalar dimensions of geoarchaeological approaches have encouraged continuous development and innovation of methods and approaches that have opened new possibilities for explorations in geographical sectors previously inaccessible, the development of large-scale data acquisitions and treatment, and also the development of microscopic scale analysis precision. This session will highlight global research in geoarchaeology with particular emphasis on innovative methods or cutting edge research using established approaches.

Parallèlement à l’évolution de la critique littéraire qui revient à considérer aujourd’hui l’objet littéraire à l’intérieur du contexte historique et politique de sa production, l’une des tendances de la littérature postmoderne consiste à mettre en scène des histoires individuelles dans leurs relations avec les événements collectifs. Aussi la production culturelle contemporaine réside assez généralement dans le recours à l’histoire comme d’un topos autour duquel se nouent des enjeux aussi bien esthétiques que mnémoniques et thérapeutiques. Dans les pays arabes où les pratiques culturelles sont liées à des contextes de conflits cette tendance prend tout son sens. Colloque autour des pratiques littéraires et artistiques au Liban et les écritures de l'histoire et de la mémoire qu'elles permettent de mettre en place.

Articulations of Subjectivity and Objectivity in the Modern Middle East, North Africa, South and Southeast Asia
International Summer Academy, 11-19 September 2014 at the Orient-Institut Beirut. This Summer Academy offers early-career scholars an opportunity to follow up on the debates about modernity, its preconditions and its aftermath by focusing on the multifarious processes in which societies outside Europe have adopted, translated, rejected or produced the global, the modern and tradition since the seventeenth century. It places a specific focus on the notions of subjectivity and objectivity as discursive practices which are intrinsically linked to each other.

Littérature, art et monde contemporain : récits, histoire, mémoire
Parallèlement à l’évolution de la critique littéraire qui revient à considérer aujourd’hui l’objet littéraire à l’intérieur du contexte historique et politique de sa production, l’une des tendances de la littérature postmoderne consiste à mettre en scène des histoires individuelles dans leurs relations avec les événements collectifs. Au Liban en particulier, face à ce qui est vécu comme une amnésie collective entreprise depuis 1990, sponsorisée et entretenue par l’État et la volonté de reconstruction, tandis que des travaux mettent au contraire l’accent sur le travail du deuil et de l’oubli qu’ils envisagent comme une pratique nécessaire par laquelle le passé est interrogé et le présent confronté, artistes, cinéastes et romanciers se donnent pour mission de raconter et de réactiver les processus qui permettent de comprendre le passé refoulé, mobilisant pour ce faire les paradigmes du récit et de la mémoire, voire questionnant et bouleversant l’usage de ces derniers. Ce colloque se donne pour objectif de donner à voir, dans le cadre d’une approche interdisciplinaire (esthétique, historique, sociologique, philosophique, psychologique ou narratologique) comment littérature et arts interagissent face à ces problématiques communes.

1st East and West Conference on Translation Studies
This conference aims to provide a biannual forum for East and West dialogue on Translation Studies. This inaugural edition will be dedicated to “Translation History Matters” and welcomes contributions addressing issues related (though not circumscribed) to translation history, historiography and metahistoriography. Centred on translation understood as an intentional phenomenon of human and mostly intercultural communication, this conference aims to focus on the role played by translation in Eastern and Western cultural practices and encounters through history as well as on the role of history to understand both translation and translation studies. By bringing together Eastern and Western views on a multitude of translation history matters, this conference aims to stress why, how and for which purposes translation history matters.

La lumière dans les religions du Livre : une approche pluridisciplinaire
Si la lumière représente un outil précieux pour la mise en valeur des édifices, elle répond également à des impératifs d’ordre pratique et fonctionnel. Au-delà de son rôle purement esthétique, elle constitue en effet un moyen de circonscrire l’espace et d’organiser son occupation, en définissant des spatialités et des temporalités adaptées aux fonctions de l’édifice. Pour évaluer l’importance des dimensions spatiales et temporelles de la lumière, une lecture croisée des sources disponibles, tant architecturales et archéologiques que textuelles et iconographiques, pourra s’avérer particulièrement féconde. Le thème de la lumière, thème complexe et foisonnant, constitue en effet un point d’entrée privilégié, non seulement pour l’étude des rapports de l’homme à l’espace et au sacré, mais également pour la mise en valeur – au sein de ou entre les monothéismes eux-mêmes – d’influences, d’échanges, de ruptures, de continuités ou d’héritages. Ce colloque propose d’explorer le thème de la lumière en Orient et en Occident, dans l’Antiquité tardive et au Moyen Âge, dans une perspective transdisciplinaire et autour de cinq axes thématiques.

Not All Quiet on the Ottoman Fronts
Neglected Perspectives on a Global War, 1914-18
As World War I was the central founding experience of the twentieth century and thus needs to be discussed in relation to various segments of society and on several levels, we believe that its 100th anniversary is the appropriate moment to bring together recent research on the Ottoman theater of the war based on the various traditions of this new military history established in the last 30 years and assess where we stand today in our knowledge of the World War and where we are headed. We therefore invite papers that develop existing approaches and questions to a further level. On this basis these papers will aid us in entering into a comparative, and where possible transnational, perspective of the war.

We intend in this workshop to reconsider how new technologies flow and circulate around the globe. One cannot ignore the obvious fact that we are seeing the emergence of new technological and industrial centres which accompany the rapid redistribution of economic power around the world; but one should also take into account the fact that technology is – and has always been – flowing and circulating in much more unexpected ways than predicted by the old-fashioned diffusionist models which are still prevalent, even in these times of globalisation. By privileging in this workshop (and in our collective project) a comparative approach between three very different geographical regions – South Asia, the Middle East and Europe – we hope to be able to propose an approach to technological flow, which will be sufficiently global and comparative, for going beyond the specificities of any particular culture or society, and which may really better help us understand the dynamics of technological circulations and the processes by which technologies are reinvented in different locations. -

Semaine internationale des archives francophones à Hanoï, Vietnam
Le comité directeur du PIAF (Portail international d'archivistique francophone) organise, en partenariat avec les Archives nationales de la République du Vietnam, la « semaine internationale des archives francophones » (SIAF 2) à Hanoi, Vietnam du 21 au 24 novembre 2011. Cette rencontre réunit des archivistes professionnels, des enseignants en archivistiques et des étudiants venant du Vietnam, du Laos, du Cambodge, de France, de Belgique, de Suisse, du Sénégal et du Canada. Le thème de la « pratique archivistique francophone » dans ces différents pays sera abordé sous divers angles durant une journée (le 22 novembre). Suivront deux journées de formation à l’utilisation et à l’exploitation du site du portail international d’archivistique francophone.
