Locating the Lost Archive of Arab Cinema

This special issue asks how our histories of Arab cinema might change if we tackle the problem of Arab cinema’s lost archive(s). From most of the films made in Lebanon prior to 1975 to the cinemas of Iraq, Yemen, Palestine, Sudan, and elsewhere, there are many reasons why films and their histories may have been lost to current memory. From structural and environmental issues and the lack of investment in proper storage facilities and maintenance.

Japanese spatiality (Japarchi) - 2020-2021

Année 2020-2021

Le séminaire annuel « Spatialité au Japon » du réseau scientifique thématique JAPARCHI a repris à l’automne 2018. En s’intéressant à un ensemble de notions et de dispositifs fondamentaux de la culture spatiale du Japon, il s’inscrit dans la continuité de l’« encyclopédie ouverte » publiée en 2014 : Vocabulaire de la spatialité japonaise. Cette année, les entrées thématiques portent : 1) sur la notion d’informel dans l’actualité de l’espace. Cette notion apporte un renouvellement conceptuel et pratique utile pour aborder les questions de transitions, de ville soutenable et également de crises, 2) sur les notions de paysage au Japon avec une deuxième journée d’étude 3) les jardins japonais en France, c’est-à-dire sur la présence/l'empreinte/la réception/l’influence du Japon dans le paysagisme en France, avec une première journée d’étude 4) sur le patrimoine architectural, urbain et paysager dans la ville japonaise d’aujourd’hui.

Beirut - the comeback

L’appel à propositions interroge la catastrophe et la reprise, nécessaire, de la tragique explosion du 4 août, à Beyrouth. La reprise s’oppose, par définition pour Søren Kierkegaard, à la pure répétition — impossible — du même. La reprise est recréation sous un autre visage, en assumant les aléas de la mémoire, ses failles, ses imprécisions. Reprendre Beyrouth, c’est déjà se trouver sur un terrain miné, à ramasser des éclats de visages, de sens, de chronologie rompue. Reprendre Beyrouth, c’est aussi la repriser, en suturer l’architecture, l’histoire, l’héritage, la sauver de sa propre béance. L'appel, interdisciplinaire, s'ouvre à l'image (photographie, caricature, bande dessinée, illustration, dessin, collage) et au textuel (textes en prose, poèmes, réflexions).

Films in the Mirror

Forty years of cinema in Japan (1980-2020)

This edition proposes rethinking the last forty years of Japanese cinema along the following lines: industrial, aesthetic, thematic and theoretical. The history of cinema in Japan is still polarised into two “golden ages”: the 1930s and the 1950s, both periods of excellence through their production and artistry. The works of Ozu, Mizoguchi, Naruse and Kurosawa naturally come to mind for their expression of what is considered as quintessence of uniquely Japanese cinema. But the impact of a golden age is discernible only when in proportion to the decline that surrounds it: from the fits and starts of primitive cinema, to the provocations of the new waves, all the while snubbed by militaristic propaganda. Historiography would nevertheless find its model in this scansion between the peak and trough. But sixty years after the end of its last “golden age”, what relevance does such model still hold, if not to deplore the former glory of a production now adrift?

Narrative forms and co-production in Arab cinemas

Norms, constraints, and margins of freedom

Film industry in the Arab world remains generally underdeveloped. Arab countries still depend on international film support funds, mainly European. This puts Arab producers, scriptwriters and filmmakers in a subaltern position in relation to European producers and funders, whose expectations in terms of content as well as narrative and aesthetic forms end up strongly impacting the film creation process. On the other hand, margins of freedom and resistance can be created within this system. This edition of Regards aims at addressing the complex relation between Arab cinemas and international film support funds.

Japarchi research network seminars, 2019-2020

Le séminaire annuel « Spatialité au Japon » du réseau scientifique thématique Japarchi se poursuit en 2019. En s’intéressant à un ensemble de notions et de dispositifs fondamentaux de la culture spatiale du Japon, il s’inscrit dans la continuité de l’« encyclopédie ouverte » publiée en 2014 Vocabulaire de la spatialité japonaise. Les interventions prennent appui et se concentrent sur un terme ou une expression. Cette année les entrées thématiques proposées portaient sur : 1) la notion de paysage au Japon, 2) des termes désignant des lieux, moments, rituels associés à l’hospitalité et à sa spatialisation (architecture, ville, milieu rural, paysage, jardin), dans l’histoire et aujourd’hui, 3) la notion d’espaces publics au Japon et de l’ensemble des termes et expressions usuels propres à qualifier ces espaces et définir leurs usages, 4) la ville et l’architecture soutenables, 5) les mobilités urbaines 6) la rétraction urbaine 7) les effets du tourisme dans les espaces.

Nous invitons les chercheur·e·s, les doctorant·e·s et éventuellement les étudiant·e·s en master 2 à venir présenter leur travail sur la spatialité au Japon lors des séances du séminaire annuel. Nous attendons une réflexion en cours sur les mots, leurs significations, le contexte de leur énonciation et usages. Les champs disciplinaires convoqués au sujet de l’espace et de la spatialité au Japon sont : architecture, paysage, géographie, anthropologie de l’espace, sociologie, urbanisme, études urbaines, histoire et arts.

The literature on pop culture in the Arabian Peninsula is particularly thin. While a rich scholarship has analyzed oral culture and vernacular poetry, less ink was spilled on those forms of culture that use new media, from tape recording to mobile phone aps and from TV production to YouTube. This issue of Arabian Humanities seeks to fill that gap and to analyze pop culture in Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, and Kuwait.

What do we picture when we evoke India? For its 20 th annual Workshop, The “Association des jeunes études indiennes” (AJEI) invites young researchers to share their knowledge and to propose a critical approach of the concept of ‘Images’ in the subcontinent: To what extent do images reflect the many realities and representations of India and how does the Indian imagery affect scholarly, artistic and touristic as well as political perceptions, from a western and an Indian point of view? The Workshop is aimed to develop a cross-disciplinary dialogue in social sciences for a better understanding of the multiple roles that Images have been playing from antiquity to nowadays in the perceptions and the foundations of culture and identities in Indian society. The aim is also to open some reflexive discussions on the use and construction of images.

The Middle East and Europe: cross-cultural, diplomatic and economic exchanges in the early modern period (1500-1820)

This conference is an international symposium that proposes to study the entire range of exchanges and relations established between these two areas during the Early Modern Times (1500-1820). Its main objective is to think about diplomatic, economic, religious and cultural links between Europe and the Middle East by calling upon over twenty researchers with specializations in the Arab, Persian and Muslim world. In addition, this conference will provide a comprehensive overview to date of the Arabian Gulf at a time of major political change, including the successive arrival of the European “trading empires”. It will focus on some of the methodological challenges raised by a global, connected and cross-cultural thinking approach to the History of the Middle East and Europe”.

L’ambition de ce numéro d’Ebisu est de porter un regard renouvelé sur ce qui fait ville, sur qui fait la ville et comment se façonne l’espace urbain dans le Japon du XXI^e siècle. Il s’agit aussi d’intégrer d’autres approches : les urbanistes (architectes, géographes et sociologues) se retrouveront naturellement dans cet appel, mais une ouverture pluridisciplinaire est nécessaire pour traiter de cet objet aujourd’hui universel. Ainsi, en complément de contributions traitant des acteurs de l’urbain, des modes de vie, des formes et de la maîtrise de la ville, nous souhaiterions voir questionner, par exemple, la poétique des villes japonaises du XXI^e siècle, l’esthétique qu’elles génèrent au cinéma ou dans les jeux-vidéos, ou encore la manière dont la littérature s’empare de la ville japonaise contemporaine

Les images d’Ōtsu – peintures populaires produites du XVII^e au XIX^e siècle dans des villages sur la route du Tōkaidō, entre Kyōto et Ōtsu au bord du lac Biwa – sont les grandes oubliées de l’histoire de l’art japonais et de la recherche académique. Elles représentent pourtant une forme unique d’expression graphique, à caractère religieux, moral ou satirique, qui occupa une place importante à l’époque d’Edo.

Creative Misunderstanding

34th World Congress of Art History – Session 15

In the spirit of the Section’s proposal we can read: "The focus here is on misunderstanding and misinterpretation in the history of art. It intends to further study the problem of the reception of foreign, heterodox and non-traditional cultures." Everybody knows the 19^th century misinterpretation of the cloud and fog representation in the Chinese landscape painting as early impressionistic sign of atmosphere. Another example of a (tragic) mistake from the 20^th century is the destruction of the Montecassino abbey by an American bomber because of a misunderstood verbal instruction. (The American decoder thinks the German word "Abt" (abbey) for the abbreviation of German "Abteilung" (military department).) However, our understanding of the Section title is based on the confrontation of the two concept creativity and misunderstanding.

Le théâtre palestinien contemporain : textes, jeux et enjeux

La difficulté de travailler sur le théâtre palestinien a laissé le champ de la recherche dans ce domaine vide, ou très peu fourni. Les études souffrent d’archives laconiques et d’un manque de ressources qui rend la documentation difficile. La production de savoirs sur le sujet se construit sur l’analyse de pratiques encore récentes dans le monde arabe et sur le terrain palestinien. L’histoire de l’expérience théâtrale en Palestine reste à écrire. Largement dépendante de la réunion de conditions matérielles spécifiques, la production en Palestine est présentée sans la régularité de saisons ou de festivals à la fréquence bien installée qui font habituellement l’activité théâtrale d’un pays. Depuis la construction du mur de séparation, Jérusalem-Est souffre d’un isolement dont n’est pas épargnée la scène du Théâtre National Palestinien/El-Hakawati fondé par François Abou Salem (1951-2011) en 1984, après la fondation de la troupe éponyme en 1977. Dans ce contexte particulier, les gens de théâtre en Palestine, hommes et femmes, s’attachent à définir dans quels termes la création est efficace ou nécessaire, tout en s’inscrivant dans les problématiques du théâtre mondial. Leur propre rôle constitue une question cruciale dans le processus de création au même niveau que celles d’ordre esthétique ou artistique. Malgré les difficultés, l’activité théâtrale palestinienne reste paradoxalement dynamique, ouverte sur les expériences menées dans le monde arabe et à l’international et inscrite dans les questionnements du théâtre mondial aux objectifs d’information et de prise de conscience des populations.

The idea of medieval architecture in Europe and Japan

L'idée d'architecture est aujourd'hui universellement partagée. Qu'en était-il au Moyen Âge au Japon et en Europe ? Comment percevait-on alors les abbatiales romanes et les cathédrales gothiques, les temples Zen et le style Grand Bouddha ? Et, de nos jours, quelle perception de l'architecture médiévale ont les historiens de l'art en Europe et au Japon ? Le XIX^e siècle a insisté sur les convergences entre les cultures japonaises et européennes. Ne faut-il pas réévaluer les différences, qui sont aussi des signatures culturelles ? Ces questions, qui trouvent une application concrète dans la conservation du patrimoine médiéval, engagent profondément notre présent.
